UNIT 3: SHORT STORY: BONNIE
BONNIE
Episode 1
This wasn't true. It was all a dream, a very bad dream. First there had been the telephone call from the
Hospital telling her about the accident. Later she had seen the worried faces looking at her and she could
see them thinking "poor little orphan". Now she was going to a strange place, to live with her aunt in
London.
Bonnie sat on the aeroplane, looking through the window. She was wearing a T-shirt and jeans and she
was holding some photos in her hand. Bonnie was not very tall for her age but she was pretty, with long
blonde hair and sad, grey eyes. The tiny houses, factories and roads were getting bigger and bigger. In a
few minutes she would be in Britain. She couldn't remember much about it, because she hadn't visited
Britain since she was three, Bonnie's family had gone to live in California before she was born and
everything had been fantastic until - until the accident happened.
"You look tired, dear. Come on, let's go home." Her aunt put her arm round Bonnie and they went to get
the car. Bonnie's Aunt Susan was a large, comfortable woman with blonde hair just like hers and a round,
happy face. They drove through the empty streets of London on a Sunday morning and stopped outside a
pretty little house near the river. The family was waiting; Uncle David and the two young children, Fred a
noisy six-year-old and Rosie still a baby.
Bonnie slept until two in the afternoon and went downstairs.
"Let's go out and we'll take you to have a look at London." Her uncle smiled at her through his thick
glasses.
That night Bennie went to bed early. She wrote a few things in her diary and then looked out of the
window at the dark and the rain. Suddenly she felt lost and frightened. She started to cry. She wanted to
go back to California, she wanted to go back to her family, but she couldn't.

INSTITUTO ROSARIO DE LERMA “Padre Ramón Barrufet” N°8084 ENGLISH WORKSHOP – 4th Year
It was a grey November morning when Bonnie walked to Milton Secondary School with her aunt. Soon
she was sitting in her new classroom, a large cold room with high windows and desks in a line. The
teacher, a small man with a thin face, was calling out the names.
"Atkinson?"
"Yes sir."
"Arnold?"
"Yes sir." ütes
"Coates? Coates? Where are you? Ah…there you are. You're the new girl from America, aren't you?"
Bonnie nervously replied, "Oh… er, well, yes."
"Yes 'sir' to me! Or 'Mr Williams' is all right. You're not in sunny California any more, you know,
Coates."
Some of the class laughed and everybody looked at Bonnie. She felt terrible and she looked down at her
desk. Mr Williams continued calling the names.
"Jackson?...absent."
"Jones?"
"Yes sir."
"Holmes? Holmes?"
At that moment the door opened and a tall, dark girl ran into the room. She smiled at Mr Williams, made
an excuse for being late and sat down next to Bonnie.
"Hi, I'm Judy," the girl whispered to her.
"My name's Bonnie."
"Today's going to be a horrible day, I'm afraid. We've got French with Miss Gardener, then History with
Mr Williams and then in the afternoon P.E. with Miss Slater. Have you ever played hockey in arctic
conditions before?"
"I've never played hockey before," replied Bonnie.
"Well, you'll just love it!" Judy laughed.
Judy was right. It was a terrible day. Bonnie didn't understand any French, Mr Williams made jokes about
'our American cousins' in the History lesson, and she nearly died in the P.E. lesson. How was it possible to
run around in the rain for an hour, hitting a small ball with a stick? Bonnie and Judy left the school
together.
"Are you coming to the school party next week?" Judy asked her.
"Well, I don't know. I won't know anybody and I don't..."
"OK. Come with me! See you tomorrow, Bonnie." Judy smiled at her and then disappeared to catch her
bus.

BONNIE
Episode 3
Every morning, when Bonnie got up, it was dark and cold. Every evening, when she got back home it was
dark again. It rained every day. Though her uncle and aunt were very kind to her, Bonnie thought about
her parents and her old home all the time. She still couldn't believe that this was happening to her. She felt
that at any moment her mum would arrive and take her back, and everything would start again.
Then there was the school party. Bonnie didn't want to go, but every day Judy talked to her about it. Back
in San Francisco they used to have parties every week, but now she didn't feel like going to them.
The night of the party Judy came to collect her. Soon they were in the school gym, the music was going
and nearly everybody was dancing. Bonnie sat on a chair drinking an orange juice and feeling unhappy.
She didn't want to dance and she decided to go home. When she was getting her coat, somebody followed
her. It was a boy a year or two older than her. He was tall and dark, and he had big, sad eyes.
"Hello, Bonnie. I'm Paolo. I'm a friend of Judy's brother and she told me about you. I know how you feel.
My parents are dead too, I live with my grandparents. I'll tell you about it..."
They started talking but suddenly it was time to go home.
"Why don't you come for lunch on Sunday, Bonnie? My grandad would like to meet you. He used to live
in America. And my grandma does fantastic pasta!"
Paolo smiled at her and Bonnie was happy for the first time since this horrible dream started.
"Yes, I will. Thanks."
