Oil & gas: a flourishing sector

that is innovating
Oil & gas prices have fallen from their 2022 highs, but the sector
is flourishing, with many projects underway. Concerns about global
warming are driving companies to reduce their carbon footprint. 3D
printing is finally transforming the industry, while demand for duplex
and other stainless products remains strong.

Welding filler metals

Stainless steel is used for many of the welded components in a nuclear
facility, including piping and pressure vessels. For operators new to GTAW
of stainless alloys, they will comment that the weld pool is difficult to
manipulate — “It behaves like chewing gum!” — compared to low alloy
or mild steel. The concept of over-alloying may be new as well. For those
who ask, “Why is it harder to work with stainless?”, read on.

duplex stainless steel (2209) that has added silicon for exactly
the same reason, 22.8.3.LSi.
Over-alloying the weld filler metal grade for stainless steel
can provide several benefits in certain welding applications.
This process involves increasing the concentration of alloying
elements, such as chromium and nickel, beyond the levels
present in the base metal. Here are some advantages of over-
alloying the weld filler metal:
CONFRONTED
1. Enhanced corrosion resistance: Stainless steel is known
for its corrosion-resistant properties, and over-alloying WITH AGGRESSIVE
the filler metal can further enhance this characteristic.
By increasing the chromium content, the passive oxide
layer formed on the weld surface becomes thicker and
MEDIA?
more protective. This offers superior resistance to various
corrosive environments, including high-temperature and
highly corrosive applications.
2. Improved mechanical properties: Over-alloying the weld
filler metal can also lead to improved mechanical properties
of the weld joint. By increasing the concentration of nickel
and other alloying elements, the weld can exhibit higher
tensile strength, toughness, and resistance to deformation.
This is particularly beneficial in structural applications
where strength and durability are crucial.
3. Matching or exceeding base metal properties: In some
cases, the base metal used in a welding application may
have higher alloying element content than the standard
filler metal grade. In such situations, over-alloying the
weld filler metal ensures that the weld joint matches or
exceeds the properties of the base metal. This helps
maintain consistency and integrity throughout the welded
structure.
4. Compensation for dilution: During the welding process,
the base metal and filler metal mix together, leading to
dilution of the alloying elements. Over-alloying the filler
metal compensates for this dilution, ensuring that the
resulting weld joint maintains the desired composition and
properties.
It is worth noting that over-alloying the weld filler metal
should be done with careful consideration of the specific
welding application and the requirements of the final
product. Balancing the alloying element concentrations is
crucial to avoid potential issues such as hot cracking, reduced
weld ductility, or increased sensitivity to intergranular
corrosion.

Uremium29: the complete solution

for urea plants
UREMIUM29 is a super duplex stainless steel specifically designed for use in the most
demanding high-pressure sections of urea plants, such as the stripper. This vessel
is characterised by very harsh operating conditions due to the combination of high
temperature and pressure and a highly corrosive environment with ammonium carbamate.
UREMIUM29 has shown excellent resistance to this corrosive medium. High mechanical
strength is another important advantage of this material compared to other austenitic
materials. Its superior performance make it an excellent candidate for use in various urea
plant applications.

The results of this analysis were
very satisfactory for UREMIUM29,
the super duplex solution for
application in the most corrosive
sections of urea plants. In this study,
where the conditions achieved in the
autoclave were extremely harsh (high
temperature, high pressure, corrosive
test solution, absence of oxygen), this
grade showed superior corrosion
resistance.

High mechanical properties

Another advantage of UREMIUM29
is its very high yield and tensile
strength compared with other
austenitic materials typically
used in urea plants. Even at high
temperatures, the material shows
excellent mechanical resistance, with
low strength derating, as shown in

scope for wall thickness reduction
with UREMIUM29, which implies
important cost savings.

Pros and cons

Bioenergy is a somewhat
controversial industry. Is it worth
supporting, given recent advances
in wind, solar, storage and green
hydrogen? Using wood as a
biomass can lead to deforestation,
meaning less absorption of CO2.
The land taken up by growing
biomass is competitive with food
production. The potential for abuse
is considerable: subsidies granted
for forest residues have been used to
cut down whole trees (2). Traditional
burning of biomass to produce heat,
as practiced in poor countries, is
polluting and harmful to health.
But modern bioenergy production,
with proper safeguards and using
advanced technology such as carbon
capture and scrubbing to reduce
emissions, has its place in the circular
economy. It is only logical to recycle
landfill gas, to prevent it seeping
into the atmosphere, or to recycle
residues and waste to create biofuels.

Intelligent Layering® was specifically
designed to tackle the high cost and
low throughput problems typically
associated with metal additive
manufacturing. Provided as a service
by 3DEO alongside its proprietary
automation platform, the result is
a production method that virtually
eliminates machine amortization as
a part cost driver. It also attacks cost
through the use of commodity metal
powders, which can be as much as
twenty times less costly than powders
used in powder bed fusion.
There are no degrading processes in
Intelligent Layering®, so part-to-part
and machine-to-machine repeatability
enables a high yield process. As

technique to gauge the material
strength of a fabricated metal under
load. Because the same metal can
be manipulated differently during
manufacturing, it is imperative to
perform these tests to see how the metal
may or may not change its shape when
subjected to certain magnitudes of force.
Stress, therefore, is measured as the
ratio of the applied force to the area
of material in which it is applied; and
strain is the ratio of change in dimension
compared to the metal’s initial
dimensions. Both stress and strain are
always present, and must be measured
to gain a full purview of the metal’s
performance.
Another way to look at stress-strain is if
you imagine having a semi-filled balloon.
When you push on it, or deform the
balloon, the resistance it shows is the
internal stress. The change in dimension is
the strain. Any time a material undergoes
strain, the metal will try to regain its initial
state through internal stress.

CTA acquires Raccortubi Group lived culture of innovation and agile innovation methodology
enables its employees to both generate their own ideas and
impulses as well as to independently drive them forward.
Defined processes and the continuous inclusion of employees
in the company's strategic focus further promote these
activities.
This also actively boosts the understanding of technical
challenges on the market and an innovative mindset to
overcome them. Regular “Idea Management” meetings ensure
the highest possible level of transparency regarding the
progress of technical projects inside the corporate group. This,
in turn, makes it possible to actively integrate employees into
ongoing developments and provide them with the opportunity
to make contributions.

Gulf-to-Europe H2 pipeline project

CTA Group has acquired 100% of Raccortubi Group.
The operation seals the strategic alliance and the fruitful
collaboration already started in 2020 and strengthens the
positioning of both companies, creating a new leading Group
in the reference sector, with a consolidated international
presence, especially in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, South
America and Europe.
With the acquisition of 100% of Raccortubi, CTA further
strengthens its presence in the stainless steel market,
integrating the production of Raccortubi with the traditional
trading core business. The acquisition will allow the new
entity to reach forecast revenues at the end of 2023 of 265.7
million euros, EBITDA of 20.2 million euros and a net result of
8.5 million.

Poppe + Potthoff TOP 100 Award RINA, the inspection, certification, and consulting engineering
multinational, and AFRY, a European leader in engineering,
design, and advisory services, have undertaken an initial study
of how the Gulf region and Europe could be linked directly
with a pipeline to transport low-carbon hydrogen. The results
indicate a transformative opportunity to fully unlock the Gulf's
immense potential as a cost-effective source of low-carbon
hydrogen for Europe.
The concept of a hydrogen pipeline connecting Qatar, Saudi
Arabia, Egypt, and traversing the Mediterranean Sea to
Europe may seem ambitious, but initial assessment indicates
its feasibility. The analysis shows that a suitable pipeline
configuration could transport 100 TWh or approximately 2.5
million tonnes of hydrogen annually. Moreover, by constructing
additional pipelines of the same nature, the transport capacity
could be significantly scaled up.
The cost of transporting hydrogen through this pipeline
is initially seen at approximately 1.2 EUR/kg H2. The Gulf
countries, in turn, could supply green and blue hydrogen
