The parents expected and demanded it (mostly because they too have been doing homework for
years and that's just what you do in school). I regret that I wasn't thinking enough about the quality
of the work that I assigned, and I hope you can forgive me. What about those kids--no matter which
of these groups they fit into--who don't have parents available to help and support at home.how well
does the homework I assign work for them. Other’s commented it is effective to make sure they
study. Here's what I have planned: Quarter 1: Homework Packet I figure homework packets are a
great way to get them used to third grade homework expectations. A complete packet earns 5
punches on their Homework Club Punch Cards for the five days of week and a brag tag. Kelli Tales

you're going to assign homework, let's make it thoughtful homework. I have tried it all sorts of ways
in the past four years, but I had yet to pinpoint one method that worked all year. The ladies of
iTeachThird invited me here today to share one of my FAVORITE ba. What do you think about
flipped classrooms? I'm still working on it myself, but I like the potentiality of it. It's basically just a
place for me to work out ideas and get some feedback on them from friends and others. Share to
Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest. I think it's so important that teachers take this into
consideration; I truly regret that I did not think enough about the work I assigned to my students,
particularly early in my career. I would love to hear your thoughts and what you have found works
best for this age group. I decided early on that students would not be permitted to sharpen. In each
weekly packet I will include: -Reading Log: 100 Minutes a Week -2 Reading Passages: For the first
quarter I will stick to the 5W passages (They answer simple who, what, when, where, and why
questions about a passage - see picture below.) I have to get them used to comprehension passages
and using their strategies. This sounds pretty good in theory, but I'm not convinced that this is how it
really works out in practice. Reply Delete Replies Adrienne July 26, 2015 at 11:28 AM Thanks
Angela. Get essay safe is here to fulfill this wish, as it provides the students the required help. I
knew I didn't want them to spend a lot of time at home working on these because frankly they are 8
and 9 year olds who need a break too. We can never thank our teachers enough for their selfless
efforts. I write on their communication card agenda (before I copy it) what pages they should be
studying every night. I plan on beginning these third quarter so we can start to review for our state
tests. Having a school-wide policy makes it much more likely that the kind of homework assigned is
in fact aligned with the mission and vision of the school. Once I've created these packets, you should
be able to interchange them for any month you teach a certain subject. These quotes come from an
interview with John Hattie, an education researcher who has investigated over 130 influences on
education and ranked them in order of the effect they have on student achievement (i.e.,
measurements of actual learning.) I've mentioned Hattie's list in an earlier blog post, where I noted
that homework does make the list; it comes in at 88th place in terms of the effect it has on learning.
As it's coming to an abrupt end for me, I've had. They are still getting authentic homework but with
tons more flexibility. Teachers are--in theory, anyway--the closest to the kids in terms of their
learning, and should be the ones to determine the kind of homework that will help students learn
most, and learn best. (Again, I'm not sure that is what is actually happening in schools, but in theory,
this ought to be the way it works.) But all that said, I also understand the importance of a school
homework policy.
The obvious risk is, if the students don't complete it, you have to do it anyway. At first, it appears as
though this practice doesn’t differ from one student asking another to do his or her homework. I
appreciate that you're raising this subject and helping teachers think about the purpose homework
servers, and how it can affect families. This year I'm starting out by telling my parents that they can
expect the homework to switch up quarterly as the needs of their learners grow. TEAM Binders My
students will keep their homework in their TEAM (Together We Achieve More) binders. Share to

require significant re-teaching of the concept presented in the video before they are going to be able
to do the work themselves in class. They have all the time in the world to review the assignment they
receive and study the areas they find most difficult. It's basically just a place for me to work out
ideas and get some feedback on them from friends and others. Those ones in the second group.what
do the parents think. The information in this weblog is provided “AS IS” with no warranties, and
confers no rights. Let's say you're a math teacher, so you create a video lesson for students to view,
demonstrating how to find the greatest common factor of a pair of numbers. I use a highlighter to
quickly color all the points they have remaining and we get to say good-bye and touch base again
before they leave. Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas and suggestions. Okay, I shouldn't
speak for you.I guess I'm saying that I haven't always considered the kind of homework I assigned.
This sheet has information about how I run things in my classroom and what I expect. The best part
is they are completely Common Core aligned, focusing both Math and ELA. They draw the students
in because they are much smaller than their old homework ways. I'll wrap this with one final thought
that is brought up beautifully in this thought-provoking graphic shared by my Twitterfriend, John C.
Carver. This weblog does not represent the thoughts, intentions, plans, or strategies of my employer.
They feel that there’s no other way to get good grades other than cheating. They don’t yearn to learn
from it, the majority of the students’ bent of mind is on how to get rid of the assigned work by
teachers. I used to do writing homework a coupe times a week where they had to answer a prompt
or write a paragraph in response to their reading. So the question becomes--as Willingham suggests-
-how can we make it good homework. I would love to hear your thoughts and what you have found
works best for this age group. I've seen my classroom's attitude about homework completely change
in the last couple of months since I've implemented these Weekly Homework Packets. And, in fact,
results from the research into the value of homework for learning is mixed. They love this! We are
super strict about earning the reward. This can be a tricky thing for third grade because they come in
as babies with a second grade mind set and they leave as 4th graders with drama and a need for
deodorant. Whether they lack time because of a part-time job or they simply don’t understand the
topic, getting help from real experts can be just what they need to ace their homework questions and
aid their learning at the same time.

and helping teachers think about the purpose homework servers, and how it can affect families. Or do
they need a little supervision and coaching at home. By the end of creating these packets, I will end
up with a year full of homework that can easily interchanged between the months regardless of what
you're teaching or where your students' needs are. Of course we do. But I continue to wonder this:
why do we grade homework. This year my team started something new and EASY, and we love it.
My concern is this: how many students are going to require significant re-teaching of the concept
presented in the video before they are going to be able to do the work themselves in class. It gives
them the opportunity to get up to speed on their subjects while having experts who can guide them
throughout the process. The information in this weblog is provided “AS IS” with no warranties, and

the topic of homework. (If you'd like to read, here's over a dozen posts for your consideration.) I've
had many K-12 teachers mention to me over the years that they would like me to meet with their
faculty and share this research. Here's what I have planned: Quarter 1: Homework Packet I figure
homework packets are a great way to get them used to third grade homework expectations. Now,
this is probably correlation, and not causation.but I think there may very well have been some subtle
psychology coming in to play here for me. Delete Replies Reply Reply kevin June 1, 2023 at 1:08

their homework and their study log earns them a special treat such as kickball or pizza (when we can
get local businesses to donate). For one thing, this literature seems pretty narrow in focusing solely
on academic performance outcomes, given that many teachers and parents have other goals for
homework such as increased self-directedness. And even better? Start having conversations with
parents to bridge that gap between home and school. For an optimal experience, please switch to the
latest version of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari or Mozilla Firefox. You continue to
remind them to be honest, you move on that morning but you hold them accountable on Mondays
(see below) when the packets are due. With my area prepped with homework punch cards, hole

Most students find this useful, as many teachers just check their assignments and then move on to
the next topic without helping them correct their mistakes. I'm not getting students running up to me
every morning with excuses why they didn't do it. This program helped to improve fluency,
comprehension and eventually the average child was reading 1-2 novels a month. Teacher, how
confident are you that the assignment you are giving your students is really going to help them learn.
Thank you for posing these good questions and providing this learning forum. These passages can
count toward their 100 minutes. -2 Spiral Math Pages: I love Evan-Moor's Daily Oral Math and

for my third graders. Adrienne Delete Replies Reply Reply Kelli July 13, 2015 at 5:36 PM I LOVE
the idea of planning out how homework could change over the year and fill parents in. Honestly, I
communicated fairly little with parents like these. This allows them to eventually write all but 7 of
the prompts we have chosen for them. And as I reflected on this, I realized that the same is true for
me. So realistically, they could start their homework for the following week over the weekend if they
know the week will be busy. Other methods can also be used such as giving out two sets of exam
papers and roaming around to ensure that nobody does something unusual. However, I believe it gets
away from the busy work homework you have mentioned. I'm sure that parent-teacher conferences
were a bit boring for these parents. They were able to play the game of school so well, they never
had to think much about it. It felt good to be back, like having a cup of coffee with a dear friend
and catching up. (There is probably some commentary about my love of technology there.)
And.wouldn't you know it.? One of the very first tweets I saw was a retweet from my Twitterfriend,
Erin Olson (whom you should be following, if you are a teacher). I encouraged them to have a real
conversation with their colleagues about homework--and to really talk about their schools' homework
policies, particularly if they don't currently have one. The information in this weblog is provided “AS
IS” with no warranties, and confers no rights. Even if they do it themselves.they are adults who
know the content well.not novices who are learning this for the first time, right. My fear is that to
meet a particular homework quota, even more shoddy, low-quality busywork (ah, crappy homework.)
would be assigned. It's not that homework has no benefit whatsoever. Each sheet is labeled with the
Common Core State Standard for quick assessment of the standard.
If a student is having trouble with their behavior, they receive one warning before they start losing

Debbi. And if that is the only reason we are grading homework, maybe we need to get to the root of
the problem: why aren't kids doing the homework. I've seen my classroom's attitude about homework
completely change in the last couple of months since I've implemented these Weekly Homework
Packets. The weekly covers are the only things that tie to the monthly themes. But what if the
students are not being honest you ask. A complete packet earns 5 punches on their Homework Club
Punch Cards for the five days of week and a brag tag. Lucky for me, I have the majority of my
classroom doing their homework every. single. night. and best of all, they are excited about it. I am
embarrassed of the quality of homework I used to assign, honestly. Let's look at these same three
groups of kids and the math homework I assigned, but this time, let's try to think of it from the
parents' perspective. But I decided to start things off this way, because it describes the quality of
work so many teachers assign. Having a school-wide policy makes it much more likely that the kind
of homework assigned is in fact aligned with the mission and vision of the school. For another thing,
even if it were shown the certain types of homework led to certain types of improvement in academic
outcomes, that doesn't mean every school and classroom ought to assign homework. While this is a
really innovative idea to track the time that students are writing--and for a statistics course where
students are working out problem sets long-hand, this could be a really great way to keep track of
this!--this is a specific kind of homework. This behavior certainly bothers their teacher’s though. I
wanted families to divvy up the work they wanted to complete at home, on their own schedules.
Quarter 4: Nightly Homework My team always switches to grade level homework as we get closer to
our state tests. There is still the potential for crappy flipped homework, after all. ALL Common Core
State Standards for both Math and ELA will be reviewed in these packets multiple times, giving you
plenty of opportunities for spiral review throughout the year. This is also where my parents can send
in money, notes, and forms. I make it clear to my parents and students that this pocket should stay
empty, nothing should be in there longer than a day. I was honored when the iTeachThird team asked
me to guest post on their amazing blog. And so it was that I assigned ridiculously lengthy math
assignments. And, in fact, results from the research into the value of homework for learning is mixed.
Aforementioned, students often do these home assignments just for the sake of it. The newest
department of the Institute is focusing on curriculum development and evaluation. I quickly check
their front pocket, check for a parent signature on their communication card, and date stamp on top
of the parent signature. Will it further their learning, or solidify their understanding, or prepare them
