Lake Toba
A long long time ago,
In a valley in Sumatra there lived a farmer named Toba. He was a diligent farmer but unfortunately his harvest
was not always succesfull and he often starved. One day, Toba went fishing in the river. He waited for a long time
and became desperate.
“ I think there is no fish here. I’ve been here a long day. Huh.. I will go back home” said Toba
However, suddenly something pulled out his fishing hook”
“ Wow that's a big fish” said Toba
It was a large gold scaly fish he got.
“ Yeaay I will cook this fish and eat delicious menu today.. Mmmmmm I’m so hungry.”
Unfortunately, arriving at home he found no fire wood in his kitchen.”
Toba “ah there's no firewood here. I better go look for some in the back field”
Then Toba placed the fish inside the basin while he went to the field to collect the firewood.
Toba: “I will eat well today”
Said Toba while carrying the firewood behind the house he lit the fire but when Toba went to take the fish he
was surprised the fish was lost and instead there were pieces of gold inside the basin
Toba: “where's my fish and whose gold is this?”
Then, when Toba opened the door of his room he was surprised there was a tall woman combing her long hair
in front of a mirror. This woman is so beautiful.
Toba: hey who are you?
Ask toba the woman turned around and Toba was fascinated toba had never seen a woman as beautiful as her
Toba’s wife: I am the incarnation of the fish you caught earlier the gold coins were my scales”
Toba looked so confused.
The woman smiled and said, “ I am cursed by the gods to be a fish but thanks to you the curse is gone. Now let's
go to the kitchen I'll make you food. You must be hungry”
Magically, the woman served many delicious menu for Toba.
Toba: “if only she wants to be my wife. My life will be so happy. “
Actually, the woman could read Tobi's mind. And she replied.
“ I want to be your wife but I have one condition. ‘’ said the woman
Toba was shocked to hear what she said
“ Just say it! What's the condition?”
“If we get married, later never tell the truth that I’m actually a fish. “
“All people will suffer if you break your promise”
Toba agreed and soon they got married. Toba work so hard to fulfill their daily needs. They finally had a son,
named Samosir. Samosir is a smart boy but he grew as a naughty boy.
“My wife you can't spoil Samosir forever if he continues to be spoiled it will be harder to control him
Tobi's wife smiled and said
Toba’s wife : be patient my husband one day samosir will be a good boy.
Until one day, Toba's wife asked Samosir to deliver food to the fields for his father.
Toba’s Wife : Samosir… my dear son where are you? Please bring this meal for your father”
No Mom.. I wanna play with my friends.
“ Your father must be hungry Dear, please …
Samosir: all right mom I'll bring this food to father
However, on his way Samosir met his friends playing and he joined them. After playing he felt so hungry.
Samosir: I'm starving ah I will eat this food
Samosir then ate the food he brought and left him only just a little.
In the fields toba couldn't wait any longer he was starving.
Suddenly in the distance, Samosir came running
Toba: where have you been samosir? I’ve been waiting for you a long time.
Samosir did not answer and immediately gave him the food.
Toba : Hey samosir you’ve eaten my meal. you little fish come here !
Toba was angry at samosir without realizing that he has broken his promise.
Toba hit samosir until he cried loudly.
Samosir then ran home and told everything to his mother
What happened my dear?
Huuuu father said they I'm the child of a fish. Is it true mom?
Toba's wife felt sad because toba had told her origins then she told Samosir to run up the hill.
Toba’s wife : “Samosir quick run up to the hill son before the flood comes!”
Samosir : okay mom
Samosir obeyed her. He ran up to the hill. Immediately, the sky was dark and lightning struck. Flood appeared
from the river. Toba’s wife suddenly jumped into the water and became fish again. Toba who was working in the
fields was shocked to see the flood coming towards him.
Toba couldn’t have any help. He sank into the flood. All people were died. Soon the flood covered the entire
valley. The village became a lake which is named Lake Toba. The islands in the middle of the lake is called
Samosir Island.

first, we have to keep our promise well
second, we must obey what our parents said.
