Staff Hiring Process

(Antelope High School Hiring Scenario)

Scenario Description
How does a teacher become effective? In accordance with research, teachers must possess five
qualities. Developing relationships with students is an important skill for a teacher. “Creating a
safe, positive, and productive learning environment requires teachers to build trusting
relationships with students. Cognitive, social, and emotional development knowledge must be
incorporated into teaching (Deluca, 2016).” Patient, caring, and a kind personality are also
essential qualities of an effective teacher. As a result, students will be able to demonstrate
sensitivity to their differences. The third factor is the knowledge of learners and it is my
responsibility as an instructor to provide instruction that is tailored to the needs of your students.
The dedication of a teacher is another quality to look for. Your work must be something you are
passionate about. If you want to make a difference in the life of a student, you must be passionate
about what you do. It is important for students to receive unconditional support from you if you
enjoy your profession. Last but not least, motivate others. Engaging students, interacting with
them, and inspiring interest in your subject matter is your goal.
Interview Process
A passionate and enthusiastic teacher is what every principal wants in their classroom. “The best
teachers are not only those who strive to teach others but also those who continue to learn
themselves” (Davies, 2021). The ability to recognize one's own behaviors and the willingness to
improve should be a prerequisite for teachers. Traditionally, principals at the high school level
include lead teachers in the department/subject area, another assistant principal, and a veteran in
the hiring process. A result is a collaborative group that will grow over time. When it comes to
all and any other subject areas, candidate selection will consist of course adaptations to the
subject area. The process of individualization allows for the maintaining the target positions and
all the aspects that are all parts of being a successful teacher. Questions about the person, their
skills, experience, qualities can be presented by the assistant principal.
Other Teaching Positions
When it comes to asking questions about scenarios of the daily classroom situations, a
lead teacher is the best person for this. Lastly, bringing in a load of experience of the profession
and to ask questions dealing with strategies used in the classroom, the veteran teacher or teachers
are a great resource for this. This collaborative interview team, principal, assistant principal, lead
teacher, and veteran teacher, make up the professional part of the team. Involving parents and
even a student to ask questions about interaction with parents, community, and the interaction
with students, makes up the last members of the interview team. These courses are fundamental
in building skill that students will be able to apply throughout their education (Wallis, 2020). The
soft skills that are the foundation of these classes are what employers seek as they interview and
higher future employees. General Education courses are the backbone of a student’s life in order
to be consistent in being successful in their other areas of study.
Interview Questions
Many questions can and should be asked during the interview process. The questions that
I would focus upon deal with the knowledge and experience that is required to meet the needs of

the whole students. These questions should also pertain to the academic, emotional, and social
growth of all students. There also may be questions that deal with the professionalism of the
teacher as it relates to classroom management, teacher-student relationships, student engagement,
and learning outcomes (Ward, 2019). A few questions that I would present will deal with the
candidate’s organization, mindset, experience, and expectations. Behavioral questions may
concentrate on past events or those that may predict future activities and actions.
The following questions are sample questions that may be involved in the interview
process, and they are as follows:
1. As a classroom teacher, how would you maintain the engagement of students and
keep them motivated to learn the content?
This question can help reveal the candidates understanding and use of technology in the
classroom to boost student engagement. I can also allow the candidate to present how flexible
and adaptable they are in their daily lessons. An effective teacher can easily capture a student’s
attention and interest in any given topic. The understanding that the candidate has in their
approach to being able to motivate the learners and to determine if they will be a benefit to your
entire student body.
2. How do you plan to manage multiple levels of abilities in your classroom?
This question will aide in understanding whether the candidate’s strategies are able to provide
students with the experiences in learning that would be appropriate to the student’s abilities and
level of learning to promote academic growth. For a teacher to be effective in the classroom, they
must be able to work with struggling students, special-needs students, and with the gifted
students that will be in the same learning environment. The candidate will be able to present their
policies to be inclusive and enable each student to feel belonging in all situations.
3. What is your standpoint on homework, and why is homework used in your
classroom?
Often, there are conflicting opinions about homework among teachers, students, and parents.
This question allows for me to understand whether the interviewee is aligned with my school’s
values and to see if homework in their classroom is beneficial to our students. This is where the
teacher gets to talk about their types of assignments and the quantity of assignments that they are
experienced with. Also, this allows to a detailed look into if the assignments are appropriate to
the classes and students.
4. What does classroom management and disciplinary methods look like in your
classroom?
Management of the classroom and disciplinary techniques are constantly evolving and changing
in the world of education. This question allows for a detailed look at the strategies the candidate
employs in the classroom to prevent issues. The applicant is able to present their values and
attitudes that influence their classroom dynamics.
5. Parents come to you with a concern about their child’s grades, how might you handle
this situation to resolve the concern?
This is a situation that often come before teachers as a request to change poor grades of a student
and to allow the student to retest or do some extra credit to improve the grade. The question
allows for me to understand the teachers stand on these measures and whether they will be firm
in the grade earned by the student. This will show the confidence level of the interviewee in their
grading policy and system.
Legalities in Hiring Process

As a principal, one will face many legalities in the conducting interviews and through the
hiring process. Providing clear descriptions of what the position entails is extremely meaningful
to me as a principal. Before applying for a position, teachers or staff members should make sure
they are fully qualified. Principals should make available the necessary resources for teachers or
school staff to be fully prepared. Providing objective job qualifications and prerequisites is
another significant consideration when hiring a new employee. It is also imperative to mention
that as a school, we are an "Equal Opportunity Employer." This means that no employment offer
or guarantee should be implied from the job posting or description. It is my responsibility as a
principal not to use language that suggests gender, race, or age preferences (Berkowitz, 2021).
My decision-making will not be affected by these legalities since I have always been fair
to everyone around me. Professionalism is essential to my job always. It will be common to
encounter applicants outside of my field or recent graduates who haven't taken their mandatory
state exams yet. My new teachers will be paired with a mentor to provide guidance. To help them
advance in their careers and gain insight into new strategies and teaching methods, I will offer
them professional development training as well.
Christian Values Alignment
When it comes to my own values and my desire to be a great servant leader, I tend to,
silently, ingrain those Christian values in all I do. In today’s education world, strong Christian
values are at a minimum in the schools and classrooms. This does not mean that at a professional
and personally, I must hold to my Christian values and beliefs. Using my Christian values to
reinforce the hiring questions and the hiring process, is the logic road to take. I must always
remain true to myself, my beliefs, and to my profession. This expectation of my employees and
future hires is no different.
