1. TASK DESCRIPTION
This method statement describes the procedures that will be followed for the safe and effective dismantling
and re-erection of palisade fencing as well as the installation of electric fence above the new palisade fence in
accordance to COLTO B5500

2. PRE-START ACTIVITIES
• Ensure all workers are medically fit for duty (verify medicals with safety officer)
• Ensure all workers have the required PPE (Safety officer)
• Ensure risk assessment is on site and communicated daily before start of shift
• Verify existing services in the works area, both overhead and underground
• Clearly mark out positions of existing services showing depths of underground services
• Product certificates/conformance documentation to specifications submitted to the Engineer for
approval – 2 weeks prior to commencement of works (If applicable).
• Test results and material samples submitted to the Engineer for approval – 2 weeks prior to commencement
of works (if applicable)
• All required wayleaves to be in place where applicable
• Install ready fence panels as per the attached marked up layout

3. EXECUTION
Clearing the alignment

• Strip the topsoil and stockpile in approved location.


• Clearing areas of all grass, weeds, shrubs, debris, including grubbing roots and cart away all
vegetation and debris with a girth less than 1m.
• Once the clearing is completed the setting out will be carried out by the Surveyor giving the
new positions as agreed with the EA and Property owner.
• Excavation of concrete footings to specified depth by hand.
• The excavation material will be stockpiled at the designed areas.
• Tipper trucks or Wheel barrows will be used to transport the topsoil to the area of the
stockpile.
• Compaction and backfill to be carried out to the specifics according to the inspection test
method.
• Compaction will be applicable on the backfill around fence mesh trench, fence post and
material

Civil works

• A storm water pipe will be laid at the mouth of the pond as indicated in the layout

• Approved backfill material will be used to backfill over the pipe and will be compacted to
achieve driveability over the pond
• Care will be taken to ensure that the pipe ends are protected using a wire net or other
suitable material to ensure that no material clogs the pipe and caused blockages
• The area will be well barricaded to ensure that the pond stays protected and no foreign
materials encroach into the pond as a consequence of the contractor working in the vicinity

• Excavation will be carried out using a TLB or hand excavation for the retaining wall base
• The insitu material will be levelled & compacted to the required MDD
• Reinforcement steel will be fixed to detail as specified by the EA
• The subsoil drain will be placed as per the drainage detail
• An inspection will be placed ensuring that the AREs are satisfied with the drainage
installation prior to placement of terra-force blocks
• Terra-force blocks will be placed ensuring that the steel cover is maintained
• Concrete will be cast inside the terra-force blocks and mildly vibrated to eliminate any air
bubbles that may occur
• The back of the wall will be backfilled and compacted to the required MDD
• Inspections will be continuously placed as we go ensuring that spec are met and quality of
works is acceptable

Foundations and post holes

• Once the earthwork is completed, inspected, and approved the preparation of the fence will
commence.
• The surveyor will stake the footprint area of the fence line to be erected.
• Before the work starts the foreman must make sure that the workers are wearing the correct
PPE.
• The tools to be used to erect the fence must be in a good working order.
• Workers will then start with the excavations of the corner posts. Digging holes of 600 mm x
500 mm²
• Posts will be placed into the holes and secured with concrete 20MPa.
• Posts will be planted at intervals of 2m
• The surveyor will check that the position of the middle posts are in a straight line and will mark
the position of each hole with a stake.
• Horizontal rails will be bolted to the posts at a clearance of 100mm top and bottom.
• Pales shall have pale heads and will be welded between the posts at intervals of 150mm.
• Pales will be welded to the horizontal rails, welding screen to be used and all safety measures
in place.
• Straining and or corner posts shall be erected at terminal points, gates, low points, corners,
bends or junctions.
• All earthing will be installed/executed in compliance with specifications and drawings. earthing
will be done with solid copper rod connected to earth spikes at intervals, if required.

• Gates to suit the width of access as required, and posts installed in the same manner as
mentioned above
• Once the erection of the fence is complete a gate will be installed as per the property owner’s
requirements
• After work for the day is completed all machinery that will be kept on site or open excavations
that will be open over-night will be barricaded with temporary fencing.

Installation of electric fence

• Install the metal stakes


• Thread the wire
• Set up connection
• Inspection and test

Dismantling of existing palisade fence

• Undo the bolts and remove the whole 2m length of pales welded to the 2 horizontal rails
• Load and cart to designated storage area
• Break the concrete for the posts using a concrete breaker and cart to storage area
• Backfill all the holes and mildy compact with a rammer

4. RESOURCES REQUIRED
Plant and equipment
• TLB, Concrete breaker, Compactor (rammer), Sit on roller

• Hand tools (spade, wire cutters, utility knife, tape measure, ratchet, claw hammer)

• Electrical tape, Electric drill and screws

5. QUALITY CONTROL
• Refer to inspection & test plan (QCP)

6. HEALTH, SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL


• Refer to risk assessment
• Wear your PPE at all times
• Keep a tidy site
• Do not put yourself or others at risk
• Follow safety signs and procedures
• Never work in unsafe areas
• Report defects and near misses
• Never tamper with equipment
• Use the right equipment
