Our Vision
Develop FMS as a world-class university based institution of
academic excellence and thought leadership in management
education.
What is it that differentiates an excellent business leader from a good one? It is the zeal, the passion, the commitment to consistently
strive to raise the bar. It is about competing not just with one's peers, but also with oneself. It is about challenging assumptions, of
outdoing one excellent performance with a superior one. It is about a rare degree of conviction towards one's capabilities, an
unwavering faith in one's values, a relentless pursuit of perfection and a tacit contract of symbiosis with one's environment.
When FMS looks back at its heritage spanning more than 50 years, it is this attitude that stands out amidst the laurels of its stalwarts. An
attitude that has shaped, encouraged and motivated all the learners. An attitude that has made each participant a performer, time and
again. An attitude that has turned challenges into victories. An attitude that is contagious.
The Faculty of Management Studies (FMS) is a place where you find endless possibilities and a passion for excellence
in defining and dealing with the needs of tomorrow. FMS has achieved many milestones right since its year of inception
and is recognized amongst the top Schools of Management Education in India. FMS over the years has developed a
strong infrastructure and intellectual capital with access to journals, databases and many other requisite facilities.
Managers who have graduated from FMS are successfully meeting all the challenges of global competitiveness in both
manufacturing and service sectors. FMS alumni today are top business leaders with a proven record of commitment
and performance.
I am sure many bright students from all subject areas will seek admission in FMS and those who clear the entrance
exams will choose FMS as their first preference.
My best wishes for a productive admission process of Faculty of Management Studies.

Message from
the Dean
Welcome MBA aspirants to the Faculty of Management Studies (FMS). Applying to FMS would be a sound objective choice for you for a number of
reasons. Since 1954, as one of the pioneering institutions of management education in India, FMS has developed distinct brand equity. The
learners here challenge assumptions, think beyond visible limits, and add the value of excellence in whatever they do.
FMS allows you to regularly interact with diverse disciplines available only in a University set-up that shape multi-talented leadership potential in
you holistically. You encounter an enriching learning environment both within and outside the class-rooms. You rejoice the strong bonding that is
only possible in small batch sizes that FMS programmes offer. You regularly interact with professionals from premier establishments--both
national and international. You not only get the benefit of the expert faculty but also get mentored by the global alumni who have, over the years,
brought laurels to their alma mater. You remain future-ready at a time when the Indian economy is gearing up to fresh challenges and exciting
opportunities. FMS gives you one of the best returns on all your investments that you would ever make in your entire life, anywhere in the globe!
Demand for high-quality professionals will keep growing not only in manufacturing sector but more so in the services sector. As a thought-leader
institution, FMS launched another full-time MBA programme focused on Management of Services in its Golden Jubilee year 2004. The programme
is very successfully administered in the South Campus facility of FMS and final placements of the first two batches are eloquent testimonies of the
refreshingly new programme's utility and acceptability. We shall continue to explore new growth avenues through our core competencies of
Training, Research, Consultancy and Networking.
As a customer-focussed institution, we have further simplified the application process. Firstly, we have one of the simplest application forms. You
can use a single form for application to either or both of the full-time programmes MBA and/or MBA-MS and shall receive only one Roll No. and
only one Admission Ticket for the written examination. Second, this year you also have the option of Online Registration facility by logging on to
www.fms.edu. This new facility, along with a much larger number of Bank Branches from where FMS Admission Forms are available, should make
life simpler for you. FMS always strives to make things simpler in a complex world.
Our best wishes to you for an exciting journey in July 2008.

MBA
It takes character, grit, determination, perseverance and focus to champion the business environment for years. MBA, the flagship course at FMS, has
achieved this by constantly striving to conquer even higher pinnacles of excellence. In the process, it has set benchmarks for others to emulate in the field
of Business Management education. This time-perfected programme gives the learner two years to explore; to be bold, to be creative and to learn as
much as you can.
Our curriculum rests on two principles: a strong analytical foundation in key functional areas and a high degree of academic flexibility that enables you to
handcraft your MBA. The first year introduces the learners to the essential models and tools needed to frame and analyze fundamental management
issues that are essential for creation of thought leaders and change managers. In the second year, the learners decide on their professional development
plans by reflecting on the first year learnings and summer internship experiences. This assessment is augmented by advisory sessions with faculty and
corporate luminaries who share their eclectic experiences with the learner. The programme is located at the North Campus facility of FMS.
The intake to this programme is 90 participants (with additional 9 seats for international candidates).
Course Structure
MBA has a course structure which is closely aligned with the business requirements in today's scenario. The focus is on producing managers with sound
fundamentals who have the ability to hit the ground running when they enter the corporate world; the ability to challenge conventional wisdom by path-
breaking innovations; the ability to execute the most daunting of challenges in the most trying of circumstances; the ability to create synergies amongst
the most diverse set of variables; the ability to continuously learn, to improvise, to adapt, to energize, to grow, and to take the world in their stride.
Learners here are required to complete 8 core or elective courses or a combination of both in every semester. The first year of the course concentrates on
imparting management fundamentals like Human Resources, Organisational Effectiveness & Change, Marketing Management, Financial Management,
Quantitative Methods, Computer Applications in Management etc. so that the learner is introduced to the technical, economic, social and human side of
management. The Second year continues the momentum by building on these fundamentals and requires focus on chosen specializations by taking
courses in the areas of marketing, finance, systems, operations and human resources. Along with these specialization courses, the learner studies
business strategy courses which focus on skills that enable managers to diagnose complex business situations and resolve strategic and organizational
problems. These courses are supplemented by simulation games which reinforce the classroom teachings and gives hands-on experience to the learners.
In addition to these courses, the learner can opt for non-credit courses in each semester subject to the approval of the programme coordinator. The
classroom sessions are supplemented by corporate sessions, guest lectures, field sessions, live projects, workshops and many such activities which
ensure that the learner remains in touch with the contemporary corporate environment and learns the practical applications of the acquired knowledge.

hallways. We are proud to call ourselves dreamers and we applaud new ideas that come from our learners. But we believe in not just thinking new

The classroom experience is designed to teach learners not what to think, but how to think. To open every door in a quest for the best answer. To create
a door when none exists. To tap your colleagues for ideas, insights, feedback. To know that the most successful solutions are rarely reached solo. To
We get addicted....
It is easy to spot an FMSite in an organization. They are the ones who are visible because of their ability to deliver consistently, from the classrooms to
the corporate board rooms. Our success should hardly be a surprise to anyone close to the FMS culture. At a basic level, it is about the intellect to grasp
the crux of an issue, the ability to generate ideas for innovative solutions, the focus to coverage on an action plan, the drive to execute that plan and the
faith to stand by it. But it is also so much more than that. It is about an ingrained attitude attuned towards discipline, towards team work, towards
integrity, towards success. An attitude that is a promise. A way of life. A commitment. An Addiction.

New Initiatives
The real world isn't quite so textbook. Which is why at FMS, the learners will be part of an environment that encourages interaction and new ways of
thinking. They will find a veritable leadership training ground that offers opportunities above and beyond the coursework to enhance their skills.
Bridging the gap between the industry and the academia has always been essential to build a strong symbiotic relationship. Towards that end, we at FMS
have initiated modules and lectures in partnership with leading industrialists and experts to supplement our current pedagogy.

Extra Mural Lectures (EMLs)
Graduating from the first business school in India, FMS alumni have demonstrated
their performance across the expanse of the globe. In today's world of fading
boundaries, GAMA would provide a forum for learners to build perspectives that are
truly global; seek answers that broaden the mindset and gain practical insights that
complement the theoretical concepts.
GAMA aims for the holistic development of learners and would serve as a platform for
our alumni spread across the world, to interact with each other and their alma mater;
thus bringing the 53 years of nurtured intellect under one umbrella.
GAMA is to be launched in the winter of 2007 under the aegis of the Faculty and the
invaluable support of the Alumni.

International Visits
Visit to LUMS
FMS, the pioneer in management education in India has taken its quest for excellence and innovation across national boundaries
by forging a relationship with the Lahore University of Management Sciences, Pakistan. The students from FMS who went to
Pakistan stayed at the LUMS campus itself, and attended classes just like any other regular student. The aim of the visit was to
give the students a holistic experience, rather than a solely academic one. The students soaked in the culture of Lahore by visiting
the Baadshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort, Maharaja Ranjit Singh's shrine and many more such historic places.
Visit to China
Two students from FMS went on a 10 day trip sponsored by the Government of
India to China to understand the different facets of Chinese culture and society.
More importantly, they found a whole new perspective to the manner in which
businesses are run in China and the management education scenario there. They
also studied the industry in China and witnessed first hand the leaps it has taken in
order to develop as the manufacturing hub of the world.FMS is now preparing to
host their Chinese counterparts when they come visiting later this year.
Visit to France
After establishing ties with our neighbors at Lahore University of Management
Studies and exploring China, FMS has now successfully spread its wings across the
seas. A delegation of 6 students was recently invited by IAE de Lyon Business
School of Universite Jean Moulin of France, for a Summer Business Graduate
Program from 25th June to 6th July 2007.
The program which has been running successfully for the last 20 years was
introduced to FMS with an intention to build and reinforce the connection between
India and France and the respective business schools, apart from cross cultural
discussions and a comparative study between the various management
perspectives and principles. The underlying theme of the Summer Business
Graduate Program at Lyon was to 'How to do Business in the European Union'.
As a part of the visit, a Company visit was organized to Renault Trucks, the second
largest company in the Volvo Group. The students got an in-depth understanding of
the production and technical core competences of the company and further
solidified their learning.
