LORD MAYOR’S FOREWORD

Inscribed on the choir balcony of Cork’s Christ the King

Church in Turners Cross are the words of St Augustine
- “To sing is to pray twice”. Each year when the Cork
International Choral Festival comes around, such words
echo for me. I attend the festival to hear the most
heavenly of music that has calmed not just my life at
that moment in time, but also those around me in the
audience. Truly it is a festival that brings with it many
positive emotions.
The Cork International Choral Festival is one, which the
city is immensely proud of. The festival is one that truly
belongs to the city. It has connected itself effortlessly
into the DNA of our cultural heritage and has become
an annual cultural focus in the yearly festival calendar
for the city.
With its international charm and musical excellence, one could be anywhere in the world when
the diverse sets of choirs take to the stage with such professionalism and grace. In essence
the festival places Cork at the centre of choral music in Europe.
INTRODUCTION

I wish to recognise and compliment the organisers of the festival for their hard work,
dedication and commitment, ensuring that this wonderful event happens so naturally, while
placing Cork as a destination for music lovers from all over the world.
The diverse programme of concerts, educational offerings and many fringe activities
continues to be exciting. Restaurants, cafés, pubs, churches, schools and public amenities
all come alive with choral groups. One cannot but stop to listen, be impressed and even sing
along.
My sincere thanks to the many volunteers, supporters, patrons and venues for their continued
support, without whom, this festival would not be possible.
Is cúis mór áthas dom fáilte croíúil a chuir romhaibh anseo le haghaidh an Cór Fhéile
Idirnáisiúnta Chorcaí 2024.
I look forward to seeing you all there.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the 69th Cork International Choral Festival.

We are delighted to have so many choirs visiting us
once again from all over the world, making this a truly
international event.
The opening concert on Wednesday evening focusses
on the music of Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford
who died 100 years ago this year. Stanford is arguably
the most famous of all Irish composers and is notable
for his huge contribution to choral music, most of
which is sacred. However, his orchestral and chamber
works are also known across the world to those for
whom singing is not their first love. Our thanks to
the Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra and
the Fleischmann Choir who are performing this work,
conducted by John O’Brien.
Thursday will feature the State Choir LATVIJA who will sing music from all over Northern
Europe, as well as Rhona Clarke’s Requiem. Chamber Choir Ireland are conducted by
Paul Hillier for the final time this year as he retires as their Artistic Director, and their

INTRODUCTION
programme will include the winning entry of the Seán Ó Riada composition competition,
which is supported with our thanks by the Ó Riada family. Both this concert and the late
night concert are held in St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, and we are delighted that EXAUDI from
the UK are presenting their programme The Mirror of Speculation for us. The Fleischmann
Trophy Competition will be held on Saturday afternoon and again in the evening, and there
is a second opportunity to hear these choirs perform in our closing Gala Concert on Sunday
evening.
Even before the opening day of the festival, a choral conducting course will have already
begun, led by experts László Norbert Nemes from Hungary and Angeliki Ploka from Greece.
The culmination of this course can be seen on Friday morning, at an open session with
Chamber Choir Ireland where the conductors will be put through their paces.
We are grateful to the many supporting bodies including Fáilte Ireland, the Arts Council, Cork
City Council, and Cork County Council who provide much needed financial grant aid. Thanks
also to Ibec for their continuing support of our Workplace Choir of the Year Competition. Our
appreciation also goes to our many other sponsors who contribute to making the Festival such
a success.
My personal thanks also go to Elaine FitzGerald (Festival Manager) and Michela Del Tin
(Festival Administrator) who work so hard throughout the year to ensure that everything we
present is done to the highest standards.
I hope that you will enjoy the festival experience in Cork this year, and you are all most
welcome!

Peter Stobart
Artistic Director

FESTIVAL PRESIDENT’S INTRODUCTION

Beirim fíor chaoin fáilte romhaibh go léir ag an 69ú Cór

Fhéile Idirnáisiúnta Chorcaí 2024…. a heartfelt welcome to
you all to this year’s festival when choirs from home and
abroad, audiences, friends, festival organisers, will enrich
our city and county both musically and financially. The
heart of the Festival has always been its capacity as a
major international festival, not just to present an
excellent and wide-ranging programme, but, most
importantly, to provide for its participants and audiences
the positive opportunity to meet and share mutual
understanding and friendship through choral music.
This year is a particularly special year for CICF as it hosts
the General Assembly of CFN: The Choral Festival Network
– the international network for choral competitions and
festivals of which it is a founding member. CFN is a
worldwide network of festivals and associations who
operate to aligned quality guidelines designed to enhance the development of choral singing
worldwide. One of its intentions is “to give fair and transparent participants’ conditions to choirs
and individuals”. Membership of CFN for CICF has, over many years, fostered positive and
INTRODUCTION

productive relationships for CICF with many festivals and ensured that Cork and its festival is well
known and well-placed at international level as an excellent, and choir centred, festival platform
for a diverse range of choirs. CFN is an important choral association and I am honoured to
represent CICF as a board member.
The festival has for many years enjoyed a positive relationship with Chamber Choir Ireland as
its choir in residence. CCI has maintained a positive part in ensuring the continuity of new joint
commissions between it and the festival and we have valued its continued support of The Seán
Ó Riada Composition Competition in performing the works of the winning composers. The CCI
Gala Concert has become a central part of our programme and its innovative and interesting
programmes have always attracted large audiences. The celebrated Paul Hillier, its Artistic
Director and Conductor over many years, has been central to its development. The national and
international esteem CCI now commands artistically is very much attributable to him. This will
be the final concert he will present in Cork as he moves on from CCI at the end of the year to
concentrate on other activities. I thank Paul for his support and for his contribution to the festival
and wish him well in what I know will continue to be a productive future.
I take this opportunity as President of the Festival firstly, to thank all our Grant Aid providers,
festival sponsors and advertisers, support of our venues, and the benefit in kind we receive from
so many people. Cork International Choral Festival is a jewel to be treasured and needs this
continued support into the future. Secondly, I wish to acknowledge the great work undertaken by
our administrative team, particularly Elaine FitzGerald, Festival Manager, Michela Del Tin, Festival
Administrator; Gerard Breen, Festival Chairman, Peter Stobart, Artistic Director, and the members
of the Festival’s Board of Directors in ensuring that Cork continues to present a quality festival of
which of which we are very proud. Finally, I wish to publicly acknowledge our dedicated team of
volunteers, without whom we would find it much more difficult to function. My congratulations and
thanks to all and I look forward to the opportunity of hearing much beautiful music and meeting
many friends over the period of this year’s festival.

To commemorate the centenary of Anglo-Irish composer Charles

Villiers Stanford (1852-1924), the combined forces of the Cork
School of Music [CSM] Symphony Orchestra and Fleischmann Choir
will present the composer’s iconic Stabat Mater. First performed
at the Leeds Triennial Festival in October 1907 and subtitled a
“symphonic cantata”, the work channels the medieval Latin text
in a dramatic portrayal of Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and
promise of eternal salvation.
The CSM Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of John
O’Brien, will begin the Opening Gala Concert with a performance
of Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 1 in C minor, a cornerstone
of the symphonic repertoire and much admired for its extensive
expressive lyricism and triumphant, unassailing finale.

12
CORK SCHOOL OF MUSIC [CSM] SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Cork School of Music [CSM] Symphony Orchestra was founded

by Adrian Petcu, former Head of String Studies at CSM and
has developed from relatively modest beginnings as a chamber
orchestra to become hailed in the national press as ‘the finest
orchestra of its kind in Ireland’. The continuous tradition of
high-standard playing is indebted both to its founder and to the
leadership of Dr Geoffrey Spratt who conducted the group for
nearly twenty years. Many of the orchestra’s past members now
hold positions in some of the leading orchestras across the globe.
The orchestra’s regular performances in Cork are complemented by
visits to venues throughout Ireland and abroad. The orchestra has
twice taken part in the International Festival of Youth Orchestras
held annually in Valencia, Spain, and successfully pioneered the
concept of “Proms” concerts in Cork. It has commissioned works
from a number of Irish composers – most notably John Kinsella,
whose Symphony No. 7 it premièred in 1999. Every year, the
orchestra accompanies the winner of the School’s Concerto
Competition, and regularly collaborates with the Fleischmann Choir
for performances of large-scale repertory for mixed-voice choir and
orchestra.

GALA CONCERTS
As well as performing the nineteenth-and twentieth-century
masterpieces from the core orchestral repertory, the orchestra
prides itself on bringing rarely-heard works to Irish audiences
– most recently including Finzi’s Intimations of Immortality,
Liszt’s Dante Symphony, Rudi Stephen’s Musik für Orchester, and
Bruch’s Prelude to Odysseus.

13
FLEISCHMANN CHOIR
The Fleischmann Choir was founded in November 1992. Initially
called the Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra Chorus, it
sang in public for the first time on 22 April 1993 when it gave
a concert with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Cork’s City Hall to
mark the opening of the 40th Cork International Choral Festival.
The programme was of music by Aloys Fleischmann – one of the
founders of the Festival – who had died the previous year. Shortly
after this concert, and with the permission of the family, the choir
was renamed in memory of the man who did so much to further
the cause of choral music and choral singing in Ireland. From
1992 to 2013, the choir was led by founder-conductor Dr Geoffrey
Spratt (former Director of the Cork School of Music, and founder-
conductor of the Irish Youth Choir and Canticum Novum). In 2013,
Conor Palliser was appointed conductor; and since September
2022, the choir has been under the direction of Tom Doyle.
The Fleischmann Choir has achieved an enviable reputation
for fulfilling its mission to perform major works and large-scale
repertory for mixed-voice choir and orchestra. Recent concerts
have included Charpentier’s Te Deum, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria,
Poulenc’s Gloria, Vaughan Williams’s Towards the Unknown

Region, Brahms’s Ein Deutsches Requiem, Fauré’s Requiem and

Dvořák’s Stabat mater. In addition, the choir has accepted
invitations as diverse as ‘Songs of Praise’ for the BBC, backing
Johnny Logan during the Eurovision Song Contest broadcast by RTÉ
from Millstreet, Co. Cork, and singing with Niamh Kavanagh for
her RTÉ Christmas Show from Cork Opera House. The choir tours
regularly with past performances in Como, Italy, and Cologne,
Germany.

GALA CONCERTS
Chamber Choir Ireland returns to the Cork International Choral
Festival as Choir-In-Residence, with a brand new commission by
Gabriel Jackson.

19
Jackson’s The Dancers Inherit the Party is based on Ian Hamilton
Finlay’s poem:
When I have talked for an hour I feel lousy –
Not so when I have danced for an hour:
The dancers inherit the party
While the talkers wear themselves out and
sit in corners alone, and glower.
The programme also features I am, a new piece by Eoghan
Desmond which holds a centuries-apart conversation with the
medieval composer and saint, Hildegard von Bingen.
David Fennessy’s eccentric chOirland is made up of nonsense lyrics
taken from the choruses of traditional Irish songs and ballads.
In Cassandra Miller’s The City, Full of People, the audience
eavesdrops on ‘a cacophony of private secrets,’ immersing them in
the meditative echoes of Tallis’s sixteenth-century lamentations.
Chamber Choir Ireland will also perform the winning entry in this
year’s Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition.
The City, Full of People was commissioned by Eamonn Quinn of
Louth Contemporary Music Society with funding provided by
the Arts Council / an Chomhairle Ealaíon and Robert D. Bielecki

The Dancers Inherit the Party was commissioned by Chamber Choir

CHAMBER CHOIR IRELAND

Chamber Choir Ireland is the country’s national chamber choir and
premier professional choral ensemble, under the Artistic Direction of
Grammy-winning conductor, Paul Hillier.
Recognised for their eclectic and creative commissioning,
programming, and recording, CCI’s programmes span from early
renaissance to cutting edge commissions. Their performances have
been described as having a tone which is ‘liquid in its power and
purity’ with a ‘strong vocal flexibility of style’ (Belfast Telegraph).
The choir has a strong commitment to touring in Ireland, presenting
high quality choral concerts to audiences around the country.
International touring has included the USA, UK, Belgium, Russia,
Germany and South America.
The choir has previously recorded for labels such as Harmonia
Mundi and RTÉ lyric fm, including the world premiere recording
of works by Gerald Barry, Barry meets Beethoven, featuring
Crash Ensemble and Stephen Richardson on the Orchid Classics
label. Their 2020 release, Letters (Naxos) featured A Letter of
Rights by Tarik O’Regan & Alice Goodman, and Triptych, a CCI
commission by David Fennessy. Letters garnered a 5-star review in
the Irish Times and a New Music Scotland award. CCI’s most recent
recording with Louth Contemporary Music Society, Folks’ Music
20
(November 2023), features two new commissions, Cassandra
Miller’s The City, Full of People and Linda Catlin Smith's Folio.
Chamber Choir Ireland has a strong Learning and Participation
programme operating all across the island of Ireland, including the
schools-based Composers in the Classroom programme, bespoke
workshops for community and amateur choirs, and Choral Sketches,
a career development programme for established composers.
Chamber Choir Ireland receives principal funding & support from
the Arts Council / an Chomhairle Ealaíon, with support from Dublin
City Council and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland through its
National Lottery Fund. Their international touring is supported by
Culture Ireland. CCI is a resident ensemble at the National Concert
Hall of Ireland, Associate Artists to Dublin City University, and a
member of TENSO – the network of professional chamber choirs
in Europe. In 2021, Chamber Choir Ireland welcomed President of
Ireland, Michael D. Higgins as Patron.

THE MIRROR OF SPECULATION
Between the years 1370 and 1420, a style of composition flourished
in Europe of unprecedented brilliance, complexity and strangeness.
Composers around the courts of Northern Italy and Southern
France delighted in exploring the limits of musical possibility –
rhythmic, harmonic, polyphonic – experimenting with dizzying
arithmetical forms and bizarre notations: music written in the shape
of a harp, or a heart, or in concentric circles in different colours of
ink. This age has been dubbed the Ars Subtilior, or Subtler Art, in
which the innovations of the 14th-century Ars Nova were raised to
new heights of beauty and expressiveness through a process of
musical speculation.
The medieval act of speculation – intelligent contemplation or close
observation (as opposed to the modern sense of conjecture) – is
central to the Ars Subtilior, and connects it strongly to the music
of the present day. In our own time, many composers have been
fascinated this remarkable music, as well as by Guillaume de
Machaut, the composer-poet whose astonishing achievements
foreshadowed Ars Subtilior’s innovations.
In this programme, we create an aula specularum – a Hall of
Mirrors – reflecting ancient and modern speculations back on each

GALA CONCERTS
other until medieval and contemporary seem to merge. From the
Ars subtilior repertoire, Ciconia’s puzzle-canon Le ray au soleyl is
‘solved’ in a multitude of ways; Senleches’s famous La harpe de
melodie is performed both with and without its canonic triplum;
and we present a rare performance of Rodericus’s notoriously
hermetic Angelorum Psalat, its notation defeating all but the most
mathematically-inclined transcribers.
At the heart of the programme is the world premiere of a brand
new work, speculative in every sense, by the composer Mark Dyer.
Dyer trained a computer to ‘learn’ the notation of the English Old
Hall manuscript, dating from c.1415, using machine learning, and
to produce new facsimiles, which Dyer transcribed. The resulting
compositions are attributed to a fictional 14th-century musician and
presented alongside three original Old Hall works in a fascinating
extension (and obfuscation) of ‘speculation’ – this time by an
incognito, non-human composer.
For the final set of works, turn to the genius of the medieval era’s
greatest composer, Guillaume de Machaut. We perform three of
his polyphonic secular works – a rondeau, ballade and a motet
respectively – and then overlay six of his monophonic songs in the
playful, Cage-inspired collage of James Weeks’s Six Virelais.

EXAUDI
EXAUDI is one of the world’s leading vocal ensembles for new
music.
Formed in 2002 and comprising some of the UK’s top ensemble
singers and new music soloists, EXAUDI has collaborated with
hundreds of composers, from today’s leading figures to tomorrow’s 23
stars, evolving a unique and expanding repertoire that has blazed
new trails in contemporary vocal composition.
EXAUDI’s special affinity is for the radical edges of music both new
and old, whether mind-bending medieval rhythm, Renaissance or
21st-century microtonality or experimental aesthetics, championing
composers as diverse as Cassandra Miller, Michael Finnissy, Jürg
Frey, Catherine Lamb, Evan Johnson and Naomi Pinnock. A strong
feature of its programming is the mixing of early and new music in
imaginative and arresting combinations: new female perspectives
on Gesualdo and the Italian madrigal, or James Weeks’s
reimagining of Arcadelt in Book of Flames and Shadows (Winter &
Winter, 2022).
Committed to growing the future of new music, EXAUDI is also
strongly involved with the emerging generation of young composers
and singers, and regularly takes part in artist development schemes
and residencies such as Voix Nouvelles Royaumont and IRCAM
Manifeste Academie. EXAUDI has particularly strong links with the
Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London, and is an Ensemble-in-
Residence at Durham University. The ensemble is a proud signatory
to the Keychange initiative, pledging gender-equal programming
across its own-promotion activities.
GALA CONCERTS

EXAUDI’s many international engagements include Wittener Tage,

Darmstadter Ferienkurse, Musica Viva (Munich), Muziekgebouw
(Amsterdam), IRCAM (Paris), Festival d’Automne (Paris), Voix
Nouvelles (Royaumont), Musica (Strasbourg), MAfestival (Bruges),
CDMC (Madrid), Milano Musica (Milan/Turin), Fundaciò BBVA
(Bilbao) and L’Auditori (Barcelona). The ensemble has also
collaborated with many leading ensembles including musikFabrik,
Ensemble Modern, L’Instant Donné, London Sinfonietta,
BCMG, Talea (NY), Linea, Helsinki Philharmonic and Ensemble
InterContemporain.
EXAUDI has appeared at many leading UK venues and festivals,
including BBC Proms, Aldeburgh, Sound (Aberdeen), Spitalfields,
Manchester International Festival and hcmf//, Wigmore Hall, Café
OTO, Kings Place and South Bank. EXAUDI broadcasts regularly

INTRODUCTION

To broaden the Festival’s long-term commitment to the understanding of choral music, every
year the Festival presents an Education Programme to more fully reflect and enhance the
development of choral music in Ireland. This year’s programme is designed to offer individual
choirs, composers, teachers, solo singers and conductors a wide range in a variety of
masterclasses, voice and warm-up techniques.
In 2024 the Cork International Choral Festival is proud to present for the third year the
International Choral Conducting Course as part of the Education Programme. The course will
take place from 30th April to 3rd May. Designed for anyone with experience in leading choirs of
all kinds, the four-day intensive hands-on course will help develop conducting skills under the
leadership of expert international guest tutors, László Nemes and Angeliki Ploka. The course
will culminate in an Ensemble Workshop with Chamber Choir Ireland on Friday 3rd May.
Of particular note this year is a session on Saturday morning with the French Musicologist
Bruno de Labriolle, who will be giving a presentation on the singing and use of Gregorian
Chant.
Practical sessions in the Alexander Technique, Neurodiversity, conducting styles and
techniques, and choral leadership will offer attendees an opportunity of learning and
upskilling. Full information is available in the following pages. Attendees are very welcome
to attend, at no charge. The Festival thanks Sing Ireland for their support in bringing you the

EDUCATION
Educational Programme, and MTU Cork School of Music for allowing us to use their facilities
over the weekend.

SEÁN Ó RIADA COMPOSITION COMPETITION
The Seán Ó Riada Competition was initiated in 1972, and today, the present format of
the Seán Ó Riada Competition offers a platform for Irish composers to have their work
judged and rewarded purely on its own merits without the judges being influenced by the
reputation or status of the composer. All compositions are submitted under a pseudonym,
with the author’s real name not being revealed until after the judges’ decision has been
made. Works composed in the Irish language are encouraged. The competition has, as a
central aim, the intention of providing Irish choirs with fresh, authentic material for inclusion
in their programmes. The competition has attracted the attention of many highly-regarded
composers, with past winners including Solfa Carlisle, Rhona Clarke, Patrick Connolly, Frank
Corcoran, Séamas de Barra, Eoghan Desmond, Michael Holohan, Marian Ingoldsby, Donal
MacErlaine, Simon MacHale, Michael McGlynn, Kevin O’Connell, Amanda Feery, Criostóir
Ó Loingsigh, Donal Sarsfield, James May, Peter Leavy, Norah Constance Walsh, Daragh
Black Hynes and last year’s winner Laura Heneghan. With over 220 compositions being
submitted in the past 10 years of the new format, the Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition
clearly highlights the number of composers now working and living in Ireland, and further
demonstrates the Cork International Choral Festival’s continuing commitment to encourage
the composition and performance of contemporary music.

CHORAL ART

101
ARTIST: NATIONAL COMPETITION TROPHIES

Eoin Murphy is a graduate of MTU's Photography with New Media degree course, graduating
in 2023 with first class honours and receiving the student of the year award. He has a
lifelong passion for photographic imagery, working in both digital and analogue format, and
specialising in creating images that establish an emotional connection with the viewer.
Intrigued by the interaction and dedication that is required for the performance of choral
music, Eoin spent time with the East Cork Choral Society, making images of their rehearsal,
and responding to the moments when individual effort becomes collective excellence. The
blending of this organic image with that of a reflective Cork City Hall provides a sense of the
choral dynamic, with the place and permanence of the Cork International Choral Festival's
core venue, whilst firmly proclaiming the enduring heritage of the River Lee.
To achieve a coherent blend and gallery quality print, Eoin worked closely with Brian Quillinan
of ImagineArt Printing, who specialise in fine art printing and art reproduction for visual
artists, photographers, galleries and museums. Family owned Cork business, The Framemaker
provided expert advice on mounting and their bespoke frames are manufactured in Cork
using sustainably sourced materials.
"The Cork International Choral Festival is an extraordinary celebration of the choral tradition,
with artistic collaboration at its heart. I am honoured to have the opportunity to participate in
this collaboration through this commission, which captures the essence of the festival through
CHORAL ART

portrayal of performance and place".

CICF AWARDS REPOSITORY, MTU CORK SCHOOL OF MUSIC

In our 2023 programme, the development of the

above initiative, then underway, was noticed. The
brainchild of festival president, John Fitzpatrick,
and implemented by myself as trophies
coordinator, to obtain a location to safely and
effectively display our unique collection of
contemporary, vintage and antique national
awards and reserve trophies – a collection in
several parts.
The first part of our awards collection stems
from an initiative commenced in 1994 by John
Fitzpatrick, then newly appointed festival
director, commissioning artists to use sympathetic
media communicating the spirit of the festival
in wood, ceramic, glass, enamel, or metal,
often in combination. From the outset, the
festival retained a reserve award for posterity,
thus allowing for the complete collection to be
mounted in this display.

CHORAL ART
This unique collection of (to date) twenty-eight limited edition annually commissioned
National Trophies is the result, with works by Cormac Boydell (3), Eithne Ring/Liam Lavery
(3), Wild Goose Studio (2), Ian McDonagh, Zoe Dalton, Aisling O’Leary, Olwyn Brady, Ayelet
Lalor, Charlo Quain, Avril Daly, Diana Skalkos, Sean Hanrahan, Sean McCarthy, Tom Climent,
Niamh O’Neill, Tom Cronin, Etain Hickey, Colm Murphy, Siobhan Steele, Fiona Godfrey, Orla
O’Byrne and, this year, Eoin Murphy.
The second part of the collection centres upon our non-current perpetual awards, a significant
display of twelve mainly vintage trophies (dating from 1954 to 1983) of plaque or cup design
– silver plate, metal alloy, Bakelite, wood and glass featuring – together with a particularly
fine antique silver-gilt early nineteenth century cup. Some of these were awarded over
several decades; others for only a very few years. In addition, some cultural and civic awards,
received by the Festival over the years, are on permanent display.
These collections had been carefully stored in the festival office and other secure locations;
in the case of the national trophies, since the time of their commission and, in the case of
the vintage trophies, for even longer. The MTU Cork School of Music Fleischmann Library
now houses a permanent and bespoke display case with trophies and the more delicate
contemporary pieces well lit upon its shelves, while an adjacent wall display of framed
commissions compliments what will, in time, become a major hub for choral studies. A QR
code catalogue is in development, to facilitate the better interpretation and further research
of the repository.
It has been a pleasure to coordinate this project to fruition over the past few years and,
on behalf of the Festival Board, I would like to thank the library, buildings and school
administration of MTU Cork School of Music for their great courtesy and consideration
throughout.
David J. Butler, Trophies Coordinator

Choir, and for two seasons she presented innovative programming
and unique performances with the ensemble. Within the restrictions 109
imposed by the pandemic, she created unprecedented opportunities
for the choir both in live performances and in recordings for radio
and television
Highlights included a Greek Christmas concert presented by EBU
on Euroradio Christmas Music Day with a program that included
several premieres of newly commissioned pieces, three concerts
recorded live at Megaron Athens Concert Hall and in the historic
monument of Rotonda in Thessaloniki, and a televised series
called One Minute of Music featuring several videos of a cappella
pieces the choir recorded in site-specific venues across Athens.
Angeliki is part of the faculty at the Royal Conservatoire The
Hague and at the School for Young Talent of the same institution,
teaching music theory, aural skills, analysis and choir. She applies
the principles of Zoltán Kodály’s philosophy in her teaching. Her
experience working with young singers also led to a collaboration
with the Nationale Koren in the Netherlands. Angeliki sits on juries
at choral festivals and competitions and is regularly invited to lead
masterclasses and workshops on choral conducting, singing and
music pedagogy across Europe.
As a singer, Angeliki has sung in productions with the Dutch Radio
Choir, Meesters & Gezellen, and Orkest de Ereprijs under such
conductors as Daniel Reuss, Sigvards Klava, Michael Gläser and
Bernard Haitink.

PRO MUSICA
SOEST
[GERMANY]

Since their founding 37 years ago, Pro Musica Soest has been
captivating audiences with concerts in their hometown of Soest and
around the world. As a mixed choir, they present a cappella songs
of various styles, true to their motto ‘Pop and More’.
They sing English, German, Spanish, and other European songs,
and African traditional pieces. This linguistic diversity reflects the
cultural openness and curiosity of the choir.
A particularly unique aspect of diversity in the choir is reflected
in its age range, which spans from 22 to 72 years. However,
when they stand together on stage their differences merge into
harmonious unity.
Since 2019, Christian Koops has been the conductor of Pro Musica
Soest. He is an ‘Authorized Teacher for Complete Vocal Technique’ 127
(CVT) and also teaches beatboxing.
Their sense of community goes beyond singing: as a large,
constantly growing family, they regularly go on choir trips
throughout Europe and beyond. These trips not only strengthen the
bonds between members but also provide opportunities to discover
new musical influences and traditions.
Pro Musica Soest regularly participates successfully in competitions
and have been a proud champion choir in the Sängerbund
Nordrhein-Westfalen since 1990. These and other awards testify to
the choir’s quality and dedication.
Pro Musica Soest is more than just a choir: they are a community
of passionate singers who use the power of music to touch and
connect people. Their performances are an invitation to be carried
away by their joy of music and to experience the beauty of music
together.

CORO S’ENA
FRISCA,
PUTIFIGARI
[ITALY]

Coro S’Ena Frisca, Putifigari was founded in October 1995 from

the initiative of a group of young enthusiasts of Sardinian singing,
with the aim of preserving and spreading the traditions of the town
and of Sardinia. It takes its name from the patron saint of the town
Nostra Segnora De S’Ena Frisca.
The choir is still made up of 26 members engaged in the study of
traditional singing in the Sardinian language, which, with its variety
of cultural nuances, allows it to present to the public a repertoire
rich in history and ways of life of the Sardinian people. The group
boasts twenty-eight years of activity both at a regional, national
and international level.
The choir participates in almost all events of cultural exchange on
130 the island.
Coro S’Ena Frisca, Putifigari, currently directed by maestro Dario
Pinna, sings the joys, sorrows and hope of a land that wants to
grow, wants to show the world its great value. They sing to be
the bearer of moral principles linked to civil coexistence between
peoples. They sing to wish everyone “Unu mundu de cosas bonas,
tott’in paghe ogni die” in English, “A world of good, peace for
everyone, everyday.”
Like all Sardinian groups, the Coro S’Ena Frisca, Putifigari also
wears the typical Sardinian costume dating back to around 1600
and which was handed down until 1800. Subsequently the costume
changed appearance due to wars and different ways of living, but
the Coro wants to propose it again in its original form.

ALLMÄNNA
SÅNGEN
VISBY
[SWEDEN]

Allmänna Sången Visby was founded in 1844 and is thus Sweden’s

second oldest choir. It was formed as a male choir, and it was
transformed into a secular mixed choir in the 1970s.
Their current conductor Mats Hallberg has worked with the choir
since 1995 and has put a lot of effort into renewing the choir’s
repertoire, its unique tone and expression.
The choir has become known for its historical musical dramas,
composed of chorus lines, solo performances and spoken dialogue.
Two of these dramas have been released on CD and is also
BIOGRAPHIES

available on Spotify, “Volund” and “Utlottningen” (The Draft). A

third drama, “Samma ull” (Of the Same Wool), was performed in
2019. A revival premiere is planned for autumn 2024.
The scripts are written by one of the choir’s singers; journalist and
author Eva Sjöstrand. The composer is the Gotlandic music teacher,
folk musician and guitarist Jan Ekedahl.
The arrangement for choir is done by Allmänna Sången Visby’s
conductor and artistic leader Mats Hallberg.
During autumn, the choir rehearses an Advent program,
traditionally performed in one of Visby’s beautiful church ruins
the day before the 1st Sunday of Advent. The audience is counted
in hundreds and some of them travel from all over Sweden to
experience the music. Performed when the sun has set, in the light
of the torches with the snow falling over the medieval town. Two
more concerts are given in the following days, usually in churches
and community venues.
In the spring, the choir usually performs a program to celebrate
the return of light and warmth. This year, a jazz-inspired concert
was performed together with two professional musicians from
Gotland. Among the pieces performed, some were composed by the
famous jazz musician from Gotland Lars Gullin. His music has been
performed on many other occasions by the choir, sometimes with
lyrics by Eva Sjöstrand and arrangements by Mats Hallberg.

THE RAFSET
CHOIR
[SWEDEN]

BIOGRAPHIES

The choir Rafset from Luleå, Sweden, celebrated its 30th

anniversary in 2022. The choir was initiated by the well-known
choir conductor in Sweden, Monica Åslund, who gathered some
friends around her to create the vocal ensemble she dreamed of.
Several of the original members are still in the choir, which consists
of twelve singers in total.
Over the years, Rafset has toured in South Africa, England,
Iceland, Northern Ireland, and Sweden. They have participated
as an ensemble choir at the Norrbottensteatern, a county
theatre in northern Sweden, in television programmes, radio
broadcasts, at festivals, and as entertainers at various events.
The highlights of their career include choral singing on ice skates
in their performance “Eldens drom,” South African boot dancing
accompanied by singing, original choreography for Prince’s “Kiss,”
and selectable music menus from which the audience can freely
133
choose - just to illustrate some of the versatility.
Rafset’s repertoire is broad and spans many musical genres,
ranging from classic Swedish choral pieces to well-known pop,
songs, and schlagers to world music, always performing their own
arrangements, created by choir members or musicians in their circle
of acquaintances.
The choir’s plans for 2024 include a regional tour with a concert
programme based on memories. The show was premiered at
Norrbottensteatern in 2023.
