SELF

On my first day of the surgical ward, I was filled with a mix of emotions—fear,
excitement, and nervousness. As I entered the ward, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by
the thought of what lay ahead. One aspect of the duty that I found challenging was cleaning
wounds, especially those that were not healing well in diabetic patients. I struggled to look at
them, but I knew it was part of the job. Dressing wounds also made my hands shake a bit,
but I tried my best to compose myself and focus on providing the best care possible.

PEER

Despite my initial fears, my experience in the surgical ward has been incredibly positive.
My peers and the staff welcomed me warmly, making me feel supported and valued from
the start. They were not only reliable but also had a nice attitude, always willing to teach and
guide me. I felt grateful to be part of such a supportive team, knowing that I could rely on
them as I performed through my duties. We even had some fun during dressing the wounds
of our patients, enjoying the bonding experience it brought. Giving medications and walking
around the surgical wards with my colleagues also provided a sense of relief, further
strengthening our camaraderie and making me appreciate the importance of teamwork in
healthcare."

ENVIRONMENT

"The surgical ward had a distinct smell, unlike any other area in the hospital. Despite
its cleanliness, it wasn't as pristine as I had expected for a public hospital. The presence of
various wounds contributed to this unique smell, serving as a constant reminder of the
importance of cleanliness and infection control measures in healthcare settings. Additionally,
the high heat weather posed a challenge, as even in an air-conditioned environment, I
couldn't stop sweating. However, this didn't deter me from providing medication and care to
our patients. It was a reminder of the resilience required in nursing, pushing me to stay
focused and maintain my energy levels despite the discomfort. The support of my
colleagues and the gratitude from patients made every effort worthwhile, reinforcing my
commitment to providing the best possible care in any circumstance."

CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR

Ma'am April, our Clinical Instructor, was a kind and caring presence in the surgical
ward. She taught and guided us in all we needed, showing a hands-on approach to our
learning. Her bedside manner was comforting, and she was always there for us, ready to
assist in any way possible. Her presence made my first day in the surgical ward a bit less
daunting, and I am grateful for her guidance.
