What Will You Learn From This Module?

After studying this module, you should be able to:

● identify the different types of computer hardware accessories;

● categorize devices based on their functions; and

● determine the appropriate computer hardware device for a specific

purpose.

Let’s Do This

Read the story below then answer the questions given. Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.

I am Giciel E. Turcolas and my story began in the Province of

Margosatubig, Zamboanga Del Sur. The story is relevant as this navigates
through my journey in the world of Information Technology. Let me unfold my
story back in my early school years when computers were less known to many
and just began to sprout in each one’s household. It was early 2019, a very
memorable year when I was introduced to the ways and means, manipulation
and usage of a computer through the Alternative Learning System,
Margosatubig District. It was always an adventure to go there and work on
computers with my buddies in my junior high school years.

Like an empty cup and being introduced and taught about the
computer specifically on the topics of keyboard typing, mouse handling, which
helps us point something on the monitor’s screen, video viewing, graphics,
printing through a printer, computer hardware comprising the input, output
and storage devices made me excited and motivated to learn more. Looking
back, I was taught by our mobile teacher, Gilman John N. Go, a highly
proficient teacher in computer education. It was an excellent learning
experience.

I passed Junior High School with flying colors. I completed my Senior

High School in 2021 and decided to study more about a degree which was

4
related to the field of computer education which led me to enroll and pursue
my degree in Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSIT).

Thanks to the existence of Information Technology and the advantages

it has impacted on each and everyone’s life. Sharing knowledge, collection of
information has become a lot easier, faster, cheaper, more convenient and has
made the world a better place to live in.

Let’s Study and Analyze

Technology's influence is more pronounced in the realm of

advancement, where in recent years, there have been significant
developments. This module will teach you more regarding the different types
of computer hardware. Hardware refers to the physical, tangible computer
equipment and devices, which provide support for major functions such as
input, processing (internal storage, computation, and control), output,
secondary storage (for data and programs), and communication.

In this part, you will learn the five main hardware categories in a
computer system.

2. Processing 3. Output Devices

Let’s Remember

Hardware devices come in many forms. They can be classified into:

Input, Processing, Output, Storage, and Communication Devices. Knowing
the function of these devices allows you to mix and match from a variety of
available devices to meet your needs.

In education, the use of a variety of hardware devices made it possible

to access distance learning and broaden communication channels. As we
enter the digital age, learners become more engaged to participate in activities
that allows them to learn beyond the four walls of the classroom. Likewise,
teachers can provide a variety of learning experiences that allows learners to
explore beyond what books and modules can offer.

With the use of modern technology, education is transformed; allowing

learners to make the most out of the available resources. Combining
innovation with instruction, learners can connect their daily activities with

14
what they learn from school. Thereby, creating a deeper, more meaningful,
and continuous learning.

● Computer hardware refers to the physical, tangible computer

equipment and devices, which provide support for major functions such
as input, processing, output, storage, and communication.

● Input devices could be a keying device used to enter data (e.g.

keyboard), a pointing device that controls the movement of a pointer
(e.g., touchpad, pointing stick, stylus, touch screen), or a scanning
device that capture an object or document from the source and converts
it into electronic form (e.g. flatbed scanner handheld scanner, drum
scanner, all-in-one scanner).

● The processing device (System Unit) contains the most important

hardware parts that executes instructions and tells the computer what
to do. Inside the system unit, the Central Processing Unit (CPU) serves
as the brain and heart of the computer system. The Motherboard
(System Board) is the main circuit board in the system which contains
adapter cards, processor, and memory chips. The Random Access
Memory (RAM) is a temporary holding place for data and instructions.

● Output devices coveys’ information to the user by displaying images,

videos, documents and others (monitor), or printing texts and images
onto paper (printer), or producing sound or audio (speaker)

● Storage devices can be used to store digital data and applications which
may be in the form of images, video, audio, etc. The number of bytes a
storage medium can hold is known as capacity (e.g., Kilobyte,
Megabyte, Gigabyte, Terabyte).

● Communication devices are any type of hardware capable of

transmitting data, instructions, and information between a sending
device and a receiving device (e.g., Bluetooth, IR, Network, Router,
WAP).
