10KW IRRIGATION SOLAR Water pump design
1. INTRODUCTION
The design of this irrigation solar water pump is used to deliver water supply to irrigate 57.6
hectare crop and vegetable production. The design goal of solar powered water pump is to use
water source which is found from river and lake to increase agricultural production in our country,
Ethiopia. So we need to design 10kw irrigation pump by using solar energy to specify the pump
and incorporated safety devices such as controller circuit, get valve& pipe size.

2. Design process
The design process for a PV-powered water pump system can be used twelve steps that will help
us to ensure that the system functions properly and that water is supplied for the operation in the
amounts and at the locations required.

Step 1 – Water Requirement

The overall water requirement for the operation:-the crop farm and vegetable must drink three times a week
or one times per two day and it uses 10 liters to drink 1m2 farm.
Crop irrigation = 288.000 liter per two day (28 hectare)
Vegetable irrigation = 288,000 liter per two day (28 hectare)
Total =57.6 hectare
Total water requirement=576,000 liter per two day

Step 2 – Water Source

The water source for the planned system is from river or lake which is used to agricultural irrigation. The
water quality must free from chemicals which are not suitable for irrigation purpose.

Step 3 – System Layout
We will need to identify all necessary distances and elevations for the intake point, pump,
PV panels, water tank, and water troughs.

Fig.1 system layout

Step 4 – Water Storage

The volume of water storage should be sufficient for a minimum one day of water use, can be calculated as
follows using the water requirement derived in Step 1:

288.000 liter per day*1 day

288.000 liter

So, the water storage should be 288.000 liter tanker.

Step 5 – Solar Insolation and PV Panel Location
Appropriate data should be used to determine the amount of solar insolation (peak sun hours) available at
the site. In order to maximize the solar-powered system’s energy production, the panels should be south
facing with no significant shading in their vicinity in order to achieve full sun exposure.
Psh=6hour
Tilt angle=15⁰

Step 6 – Design Flow Rate for the Pump

𝑑𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑦 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑
𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝑠𝑢𝑛 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟
288.000 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑎𝑦
=48,000 liter per hour
6ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑝𝑒𝑟 𝑑𝑎𝑦

1gallon=3.79 liter

=12664.90gallon per hour=211gpm (gallon per minute)

Step 7 – Total Dynamic Head (TDH) for the Pump

It is the distance between the storage delivery points to the pump in addition head losses through the
piping system
TDH = Vertical Lift + Pressure Head. +Friction Loss
Vertical lift is the vertical distance between the water surface at the intake point
(water surface) and the water surface at the delivery point (the tank’s water surface)

Vertical lift=22m

Pressure head is the pressure at the delivery point in the tank. For this example,
there is no pressure at the delivery point (the water surface in the tank),

Pressure head=0m

5|Page
Friction loss is the loss of pressure due to the friction of the water as it flows through
the pipe. Friction loss is determined by four factors: the pipe size (inside diameter),
the flow rate, the length of the pipe, and the pipe’s roughness.

Friction loss =3m

TDH =22m+0m+3m=25m

It is recommended to use a safety factor of 20% going up to 30% if the water condition is unstable.

So, we should take at least 20%:- TDH= 25m+5m=30m

Step 8 – Pump Selection and Associated Power Requirement

PUMP PERFORMANCE

Table 1 pump performance

Step 9.PV Panel Selection and Array Layout
Pump size =10kw:-minimum pv power=10,000w/240w=41.6666..=42 panel
However, the panels must also have additional capacity to account for any potential reduction in
power due high heat, dust, age, etc.
10kw*1.25 =12.5kw (25% safety factor)
1pv wattage=240w
12500w/240w=52panel

Step 10. PV Array Mounting and Foundation Requirements

The site conditions permit (i.e. the depth of embedment is not limited by shallow bedrock)
and the site is located in an area where the recommended design wind speed tolerance is 85 mph
or less, If the panels were going to be located in a high wind area, a more detailed analysis of the
mounting structure would be needed. The irrigation system needs to be designed in a water-
conserving manner to reduce water demand
PV Array Mounting Foundation and structure

This structure is enough for 14 panels, so we

need another extra two similar structure

Step 11. Water Flow Rates and Delivery Point Pressure
The flow from the storage tank to the farm is gravity fed. As noted in the given information for
this example, a minimum of 2 psi (equal to 4.6 ft of head) is needed to activate the float valves in
the irrigation farm.

Step 12. Summary Description of the System

The system information can be recorded as follows:

Amps: 26.5 A
Volts: 415 V

Power Required
(Performance Curve): 10kw
The panel information for the system can be described as:
Number of Panels: 42
Panel Dimensions 1640x992x40 mm
Total Panel area 70m2
Total Collection area 80m2
