1. Loosen the large knobs by hitting couter-
clockwise with a rubber mallet.

2. Pull the outer pump casing and volute

away from the pump back plate housing
and set aside.

3. Using the special tool provided with the

pump, break loose the impeller by hitting
the tool in a counter clockwise position with
a large rubber mallet.

4. With the impeller broke loose, turn it in a

counter-clockwise position until it comes off
the crankshaft. Be careful when it comes to
the end of the crankshaft, as it is heavy. Use
two hand to hold the impeller, making sure
it will not fall.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
5. Check the impeller for cracks and defects.
Replace with new if the blades are worn or
broken away.

6. Remove the shim(s) by pulling them off

the crankshaft. Make sure to make note
of how many came off. It is important to
replace with the same amount of shim(s)
when reinstalling the volute & impeller.

7. Remove the rotating seal by prying it out

with a screwdriver. Applying some liquid
to the seal will help with removal.

8. This is what the seal and rubber holder

will look like when removed. Check the ro-
tating seal for cracks, chips or burnt areas.
Replace with new seal in most situations.

9. It may happen that the shim(s) get stuck
inside the impeller. When this occurs take a
small screwdriver and carefully pry them
out. Make sure not to bend or distort them
in any way.

10. Block the pump up and remove the two

nuts that hold the pump outer casing to the
frame.
Place a block of wood under the engine as
shown in the next picture to hold the pump
up for removal of the back plate housing.

11. Remove the four bolt that hold the

pump back plate housing to the engine.

12. The four bolts that hold the pump back

plate to the engine housing are a special
type. They have a flat washer, lock washer,
and a plastic seal that must be used when
reassembling.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
13. Carefully remove the pump housing
and lift it out of the way.

14. Should the engine need service, it can

be removed from the frame by loosening
and removing either the bolts on the en-
gine, or the two nuts that hold the rubber
cushions to the frame.

15. To remove the seal from the pump

housing, turn the pump housing face down
as shown in the picture. Find a short piece
of pipe with an outside diameter of 1.25” to
1.3/8” . Align over the crankshaft hole.

16. Drive the seal out with the pipe, until

it drops to the table below.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
17. Lift the pump housing up and the seal
will be on the workbench, face down.

18. This what the seal will look like when

in new condition. The seal surface should
not have any cracks, chips or burn marks.
Replace with new when in doubt.

19. Before installing the seal spread a little

silicone sealant around the outer metal di-
ameter. This will help seal the edges from
leaks.

20. Installation of the seal into the pump

housing will work best when using this
installation tool. It is a piece of PVC pip-
ing that has an inside diameter of 2” and an
outer diameter of about 2.25 inches. Cut off
a short piece and place the seal onto the end
of it.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
21. Drive the seal into the housing evenly.
Taking the PVC pipe off after every blow,
and checking to make sure it is seating into
the housing evenly. Wipe off any excess sili-
cone sealant that may have squeezed out.

22. Before installing the pump housing

check the weep hole. It must face downward
and must not be plugged with dirt or de-
bris.

23. Place the housing onto the engine mov-

ing it over the crankshaft, and reinstall the
four special bolts.

24. Torque the four bolts to the specified

value of 14 to 21 ft. lbs.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
25. Place the shim(s) back onto the crank-
shaft with the same number that was taken
off. If either the volute, wear plate, or im-
peller were replaced it may become neces-
sary to change the number of shims.

26. Before replacing the rotating seal on the

impeller, place a little liquid dish washing
soap on the seal to help slide into place. This
will prevent the seal and rubber holder
from binding when pushing into the impel-
ler body.

27. The seal face can be installed wrong if

not careful. The manufacturer has a paint
warning mark on the wrong side. Be care-
ful not to install incorrectly.

28. Using your two thumbs, push the seal

into the impeller making sure it is even and
not kinked or bent.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
29. Hand tighten the impeller onto the
crankshaft until it can go no further.

30. Use the special tool provided with the

pump to tighten the impeller. Hit the tool in
a clockwise position until tight.

31. Should it become necessary to remove

the volute from the front pump housing
then loosen the three allen head bolts that
attach it to the front pump housing.

32. Pull the volute away from the front

pump housing slowly.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
33. Now would be a good time to check the
O-ring that seals the outer pump housing
the pump back plate housing. Check for
cracks, chips, tears and general condition.
Replace with new when needed.

34. Inspect the volute for cracks and gouges.

Look at the wear plate and check the bolts
for tightness that hold the wear plate to the
volute housing.

35. Check the O-ring on the backside of the

volute for chips, tears, cracks, and general
condition. Replace if necessary.

36. If it becomes necessary to remove the

wear plate then loosen the three allen head
bolts that hold it into the volute housing.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
37. The wear plate make need a little nudg-
ing from the backside to release itself from
the volute. Use a small punch and lightly
tap on the wear plate until it pops out.

38. Remove the wear plate by pulling it out

of the volute assembly.

39. Check the condition of the wear plate

and replace if necessary. Its wear pattern
should be even and not have any gouges or
large pieces missing.

40. When replacing the wear plate, place

a small amount of silicone sealant around
the backside before placing it back into the
volute.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
41. Place a small amount of thread locking
compound on the bolts. This should be a ser-
vice replaceable type. Permatex® Purple or
Blue will work.

42. Tighten the bolts that hold the wear

plate to the volute to a specified value of: 5
to 9 ft. lbs.

43. Before placing the volute back into the

outer pump housing, place a small amount
of thread locking sealant on the bolts. This
should be the same type as mentioned in
step 40.

44. Torque the bolts that hold the volute to

the outer pump casing to a value of 9 to 11
ft. lbs.

pump back plate.

46 Tighten the large knobs with a rubber

mallet

47 Should it become necessary to remove

the discharge nozzle loosen the four bolts
that hold it to the outer pump casing.

48 Lift the nozzle off and check the gasket

that is used between the nozzle and pump
casing. It should not be torn, cracked or
twisted.

49 Replace the four bolts and hand tighten.
Torque to the specified value of 9 to 11 ft.
lbs.

50. Should it become necessary to remove

the intake nozzle, loosen the four bolts that
hold it to the pump housing.

51. Check the condition of the gasket. It

should not have any crack, gouges or tears.

52. This is the position of the gasket on the

intake nozzle. It is important that it is in-
stalled correctly. Note picture.
Service PTV Trash Pumps
53. Place a small amount of thread sealing
compound on the three bolts that hold the
intake nozzle to the outer pump housing.

54. This gasket tab must be showing and

in the upward position when gasket is in-
stalled.

55. Replace the four bolts that hold the in-

take nozzle to the outer pump housing and
torque to the specified value of 6 to 7 ft. lbs.

56. Turn the engine over to make sure that

the pump is not binding.

57. Remove the prime fill plug and fill with
water till it runs out either nozzle.

59. After putting water, gas, and oil into

unit, start engine and place vacuum tester
on intake nozzle. Vacuum gauge should
read between 20" and 25" within a few
seconds. If gauge reading is not within the
specified range, or the reading takes longer
than 15 seconds to obtain, re-check volute to
impeller clearances as well as gaskets and
surfaces.

60. Make sure to use the Robin Parts man-

ual or parts CD when ordering replace-
ment parts for this pump.
