Dear Upper School Students and Parents,
Thank you for being part of the George Washington Academy community. We are proud of the work our students
do and the quality of graduates GWA has produced for over 20 years. Report cards provide a vehicle for
describing student learning and work habits. As such, it serves as communication from the teacher to student, the
teacher to parents, and from teacher to teacher. Please look at the information here with the goal of continual
growth and improvement. We want our students to be the best learners they can be, and we will help them every
step of the way.

Summary of Achievement

English 6 2 6
Deann (DeAnn) Young
In the first trimester of English Language Arts, we started our Vocabulary Unit by learning the 25 Greek/Latin
Power Words that enable users to decode over 60,000 English words. Students can use these skills to increase
their vocabulary. This skill serves as the stepping stone to better reading fluency and comprehension. We also
learned about the most significant literary genres in preparation for our Independent Reading and Writing
Assignments that will continue throughout this school year. The students were required to independently read two
books and write two book reviews, one focusing on literary elements and the other helping develop their skills in
being concise writers. They also presented a Book Talk to help improve their English speaking, presentation, and
listening skills. We continue to work on the basic spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization skills
necessary to write and be understood in standard English. We continued to use instruments such as their book
logs to reinforce academic responsibility and accountability.
Fatima is consistently strong in English, which shows through her writing skills. She is thorough and thoughtful in
her writing. The content is original and usually meets or exceeds expectations. An area of improvement would be
to strengthen her use of correct grammar and punctuation. Fatima often talks and is out of her seat during
instruction which hinders performance, and she needs to develop independent thinking skills.

This trimester we worked on analyzing texts, understanding basic components of history, and making evidence-
based arguments. Fatima is kind, respectful, and proactive in her education. Areas for improvement include
continuing to further improve upon note-taking skills and using evidence in arguments.

Fatima is great at asking questions and interacting with the class but I think she could benefit from processing
information mentally before shouting it out to the class. That being said, she remains well-organized and is
relatively good at completing all necessary assignments on time.
Math 6 3 7

The topics we worked on this term were positive and negative numbers and their locations on the number line. We
covered the skills of applying math to solve problems correctly. The timeline project focused on using positive and
negative numbers in a real-life context and on how that information is presented.
Fatima consistently applied the mathematical skills to successfully solve equations. On the timeine project, she
easily made the connection of positive and negative numbers to her own life.

This trimester in drama class, we had two units, Developing the ensemble, and developing the individual, where
we did various activities which helped us learn to work together as a team as well as work on our individual
creativity. Through successes, failures, challenges, the students learned a lot about themselves and their
capabilities.
Fatima (Izzy) did a great job in drama class and seemed to enjoy it. She was always ensuring that she was doing
the right work and asked questions when necessary. If she didn't understand something, she was very certain to
make sure she is 100% clear before proceeding. She was respectful to me, and a respectful audience member. I
did once in a while notice she seems to enjoy stirring up trouble with her peers. I believe this comes as a defense
mechanism to her. I hope Izzy can take some more time on her journey to discover who she is and who she wants
to be. Drama can help with that, so I hope she finds ways to stay involved in the future.

Assessment Explanation
HOW THE STUDENT AND THE WORK ARE ASSESSED
All MYP candidates in year 5 complete an externally moderated personal project, but other IB assessments are
optional for schools teaching the Middle Years Programme. Students must take a prescribed set of subjects to
achieve the MYP certificate. Achievement in the overall MYP certificate is described by a point score whose
maximum is 56. The core subjects of inter-disciplinary and personal project contribute equally with the other
subject disciplines. Community service does not contribute to the total. For the IB designed summative
assessments, each subject has only one component, and subjects are assessed either by e-portfolio or on-screen
examination.
In order to achieve the IB MYP certificate, the student must have participated in the final year of the programme,
with a recommended period of participation of two years, and:
• complete either an on-screen assessment or ePortfolio in six subjects consisting of: language and literature,
language acquisition (or a second language and literature), individuals and societies, mathematics, sciences and
one subject from arts, physical and health education or design
• achieve at least a grade 3 in each of the six subjects above
• complete the on-screen examination in interdisciplinary assessment and achieve at least a grade 3
• complete the personal project with at least a grade 3
• obtain a total of 28 points overall
• meet the school’s expectations for community service.
The MYP bilingual certificate additionally requires successful results from on-screen examinations for one of the
following:
• a second language and literature course (instead of a course in language acquisition)
• one (or more) science, individual and societies, or interdisciplinary examination in a language other than the
student’s chosen language and literature course.
