ABB RCDs
Range and its applications
RCD
Definition

§ A residual current circuit-

breaker (RCD) is a
protection device that
opens the circuit when the
system leaks a significant
current to earth.
§ RCDs continuously
calculate the vector sum of
the single-phase or three-
phase system line currents
and while the sum is equal
to zero allows electricity to
be supplied. This supply is
rapidly interrupted if the
sum exceeds a value
preset according to the
sensitivity of the device.

The hazard of electric shock

IEC publication 60479-1 (*) defines 4 areas of current-

magnitude/time duration:
AC-4 zone: Possibility of irreversible effects
AC-4-1 zone: Up to 5% probability of heart fibrillation
AC-4-2 zone: Up to 50% probability of heart fibrillation
AC-4-3 zone: More than 50% probability of heart fibrillation
(*) IEC 60479-1: Effects of current on human beings and livestock - Part 1: General aspects

Use of RCDs basic and fault protection
The hazard of electric shock
When a current higher than 30 mA passes
through a part of a human body, there is
serious danger for people if the current is
not interrupted in a very short time.

Residual current relays
Applications

§ In industrial environments,
shut downs of the lines can
cause damages to the
production: production losses
can cause money losses
§ In all the contexts where
continuity of service is
needed, selectivity between
RCDs must be implemented
in order to isolate a part of an
installation from the overall
system
§ With ABB residual current
relays, you can achieve
selectivity by setting
sensitivity and intervention
time
