Mike Jones takes the helm of RU basketball

The new face of Radford University basketball may not be all that foreign to those who were paying attention to the college season last year. Mike Jones, a former assistant coach who worked under Head Coach Shaka Smart at VCU basketball for the last two years, is now set to take the reigns as head coach of a Radford University program that won just ve games last year. Jones was hired in mid-June, after which RU held a press conference to announce the signing. This all came only a month after former RU Head Coach Brad Greenberg resigned in May. Getting a head coach job in Division I basketball is extremely difcult. There are only a handful of jobs, and it seems that there are ten times never won an away game and nished as many coaches that want them, dead last in the conference. said Jones. Highlanders win big over Tennessee Tech on an emotional day at Cupp Stadium
MATT HALBERG

In an emotionally charged contest on the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11, the Radford University womens soccer team took on Tennessee Tech University (TTU) in a bruising match marked by staunch defense and a high-powered RU offensive attack. The Highlanders, who had only given up one goal at Cupp Stadium before Sundays match, triumphed over the Golden Eagles with a score of 3-1. Junior forward Mary Wiley and freshman midelder Alayna Henby scored the rst two goals for RU, while sophomore goalkeeper Che Brown kept the TTU offense bay for the entire rst half. The RU defensive backs made sure Brown was mostly unharassed, though, as the Highs didnt allow TTU to get a single shot on the goal in the rst 45 minutes. After a bruising 29 minutes of hard defense by both squads, Henby nally scored the rst goal of her college career with an unassisted rocket shot past TTU goalkeeper Becca Toler from inside the box. The score would be the rst of many for RU on the day. It was tremendously exciting for me today, said Henby, My Dad was up in the stands

With a potent combination of offensive skill and defensive prowess, Radford University volleyball freshman Emma Deininger was awarded with the Big South Freshman of the Week honor for the second straight week. A middle blocker, Deininger posted a .419 attack percentage over three contests in the Miami/Best Western Invitational Tournament. Her performance included six kills and no errors against Alabama A&M. With the first three weeks of the season already gone, Deininger ranks second in the conference in terms of overall attack percentage (.349) and ranks seventh in blocks per game (0.94).

Mens tennis set to take aim at the competition

DOM BAYA

Entering his 16th season of coaching the Radford mens tennis program, head coach Mike Anderson knows that this team could be one of the best in the history of the program. That doesnt mean that he isnt utilizing his time. He is mentally pushing and motivating the team for the long season they face ahead of them as the season kicks off this Saturday. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason rankings came out on Sept. 9 featuring two Radford players ranked nationally: sophomores Stijn Meulemans (#90) of Belgium and Nicholas Sayer (#112) of England. With no other school in the Big South Conference ranked, the Highlanders seem to have a clear advantage over the competition. The Highlanders are excited for the rst part of the season in the fall, as they will be competing in some of the countrys most elite tournaments. The Highs hit the road on Sept. 16 to participate in the three day Duke Fab Four Invitational, followed by the prestigious Ranked Plus One Invitational in Charlottesville (Sept. 23-25), ITA All-American in Tulsa, Oklahoma (Oct. 1-9), UVA Fall Classic (Oct. 14-16), and concludes with the Crimson Tide Invitational in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on the last weekend in October. It is a very exciting [season] and high level for us as we will be playing in three major tournaments lasting until October, said Anderson. The Duke Fab Four Invitational invites eight schools to compete in their three day tournament, and for the Highs it means something to them seeing as no other school in the conference has been invited to the tournament (Only Duke, North Carolina State, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Southern Carolina, Indiana, Kentucky, Florida State, and Radford have been invited). The people down at Duke respect us tremendously, Anderson said. Last year we came down there and won 70 percent of our matches which caused them to invite us back again this year. The Ranked Plus One Invitational at UVA is a very selective tournament in which only ranked players compete. With half of the participants being nationally ranked and among the elite in collegiate tennis world, the notion still remains the

The number of goals the w o m e n s soccer team has scored this season. In contrast, RU goalie Che Brown has given up only two goals at Cupp Stadium so far. The Highlanders are 4-2 overall, and will start Big South play on Sept. 29 with a home game against rival Presbyterian University.
