Tech Basics for IT Students

The document discusses different types of computer storage media such as hard disks, CDs, USB sticks, and memory cards. It also covers topics like analog to digital conversion, primary and secondary storage, read-only memory, RAM, and wired vs wireless connectivity. The document provides information on hubs, switches, WiFi, Bluetooth, infrared, DVB standards, and input/output devices.

Where do we store digital memory; ( Hard-disk, CD disk, Blu-ray disk, USB sticks,

Memory cards, Flash memory )- Media

CDs and DVDs have a seprate drrive that needs to read the disks

Have to change analog to digital usingf an analog to digital convertor when

entering sounds into the phone because they can only accept digital devices
When you want to hear audio files: Digital to Analog

Secondary Storage ---> HDD --> Have to wait for to come online
---> SSD --> Automatically come online once you open your device
---> Use when storing any permentant storage

When you open a program, it goes to RAM from the Secondary Storage. RAM = Primary
Storage
Takes data from RAM to process

Volitime ---> if the computer closes down all the data is lost
Read- Only Memory ----> can only read data and cannot do anything else with it,
stores confirguartion memory but stores data permentaly
RAM ---> Can read and write

Unit-2 (EDEXCEL)
Why wire connectivity is better, faster and more realiable; They have a stable
connectivity and does not allow any interference since it is a direct connection,
unlike bluetooth, which can have an interprutance in the wave signals
Cons of wired connectivity; additional cost and much messier and take more spaces
because of wires

If Bandwith is good---> more data can be sent so delay in data sent in reduced
Better Bandwidth --> Lesser Latency
Lesser Bandwidth --> More Latency

Ways to transfer datas ---> wired method

---> wireless method

Why you connect with Network --> because you want to communicate with other users
Network Adminstrators ---> can supervise and control the computers in the network.
Stand Alone Computer --> a computer that isn't connected to any network
Working Computer ---> A computer that is connected to a network and is prone to
safety risks

Hub

DVB-S ---> Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite

DVB S2 ---> Can Boradcast High Definition Televison (HDTV

HUB, Switch ---> Need to create local are network

HUB--> Sends data to everyone devices on the network
SWITCH ---> Only sends data to the intended device

WIFI- Is a way to connect a connection, not device

To get wifi- have to connect to a seprate Internet provider
Internet provider sets up Router at your house to get Internet

Must add in Bluetooth: Wireless connectivity , over short distances

Bluetooth needs to pair the two devices before it can connect, so the amount of
connection it can make is limited
Infra-Red--> Used to control devices with remotes
If there is an object blocking the direction between the device and the remote, no
signals will be receviced

CIE Notes
CPU ---> Control unit -->executes the instructions
---> arthimethic logic unit (ALU)---> Carries out calculations and make logical
decisions
---> Registers--->small memory locations
Embbed Computers---> Microprocessor
---> Found in
A hardware that can be directly read by CPU--> RAM
Data in Backing Storage must go to RAM to be read
RAM is faster in data access time compared to Hard disk/ Solid state and Backing
Storage because the data in RAM can be directly accessed by CPU
Backing Storage is less expensive by byte *must add 'by byte'
computer --> records the users actions on the computer

Unit-2
Input devices is also known as data entry
input devices have to translate the human lanuange (analogue data) into the
languange the computer understands (digital data)

HW: Read Table 1.3 Pg-9 CIE ICT

HW: Read abt NFC, search abt what device uses it
