(AUG. 22) —Dr. Lilia F. Realubit, retired professor from the College of Arts and
Letters Department of English and Comparative Literature (DECL), passed away on
Aug. 17. She was 86.Realubit served at UP Diliman (UPD) as faculty for more than
three decades. She taught English, Bicol literature, folklore and Philippine Studies
both in the graduate and undergraduate levels.According to the Cultural Center of the
Philippines Encyclopedia of Philippine Art, Realubit graduated cum laude at the
Colegio de Santa Isabel in 1960 with a BS Education degree. She obtained her MA in
Literature at UPD in 1962. She earned her master’s degree in linguistics at the
University of California in Los Angeles through a Fullbright-Hays scholarship grant
(1964-1966). She finished her doctorate in Philippine studies in UP in 1985.A
member of the Bikol Heritage Society, Inc., she received the Lifetime Achievement
Award in the Premio Tomas Arejola para sa Literaturang Bikolnon in 2004.She is
among the 11 Filipino scientists awarded by the National Research Council of the
Philippine on March 15, 2003 “for her researches on the intricacies of diverse
Philippine culture. Her lectures in many local and foreign literary conferences,
seminar-workshops, and symposia promoted better understanding and appreciation of
the country’s folklore, spoken languages, and literature,” according to the Department
of Science and Technology website.Realubit also authored, edited and translated
several books and researches such as the “Bikol Dramatic Tradition” (1978), “Journal
of Bikol writing” (1994), “Ibalon : Ethnographic History of the Bikol Region by
Mariano Goyena del Prado” (1981), Bikols of the Philippines (1983), Haliya
Anthology of Bikol Poets and Poems (2004), and the Bikol Literary History
(2001).She was the president of UP Folklorists, Inc. and founder and organizer of the
Archdiocesan Museum in Naga City.According to DECL Professor Ma. Rhodora
Ancheta, Realubit’s wake is at her house at 51 Jacob St., Naga City.

MARIANO PERFECTO
Mariano Perfecto (1853 - November 3, 1913) was the fifth Governor of Ambos
Camarines (1910–1913). Known as a prolific writer, he is considered as the "Father
of Bikol Literature," and the "Father of Bisayan Literature." He published the first
newspaper in the Bikol language, An Parabareta (1899–1900) and set up the first
printing press in the Bikol region, the Libreria y Imprenta Mariana. His literary
output ranged from translations of religious tracts, novenas to poems, short dramas
and linguistic works both in the Ilonggo and Bikol languages.
Salvador Pons, an Augustinian friar, stated in one of his works (Sacerdotes Del Clero
Secular Filipino Escritores. 1900) that Perfecto was a secular priest and likewise Fr.
Pablo Fernandez in his book History of the Church in the Philippines (1521-
1898) said the same thing but the source he cited was the same Augustinian friar

SABAS ARMENTA
Armenta Sabas (5 January 1879 – 19 Sept. 1949) was a Bikolano writer who wrote
comedies by Hadeng Grimaldo in the Kingdom of Ireland.He studied at the Conciliar
Seminary of Nueva Caceres and wanted to become a priest but refused because
Florencia suggested to him, "Iirikan na sanang gayo.Even writing in Bikol and
Spanish, he wrote Noli Me Tangere, El Filibusterismo and Mi Ultimo Adios, and
other poems by Jose Rizal. He is fond of writing, he has written poems, dramas, salt
pluses.She became the secretary of Father Feliciano Puertollano, the parish priest of
Magarao, Camarines Sur at the time.She has sarong abilities, she is romdom, this is
the wearing sarong soanoy customary in Magarao if the family is male in the family is

ASISCLO JIMENEZ
Asisclo Jimenez (May 1, 1909 - October 15, 1961) was a politician and writer. He
served as mayor of the town of Sorsogon and was particularly famous as a writer of
zarzuelas during his time. Jimenez composed more than 25 zarzuelas, many of which
commented on everyday life in the town, one of which was the zarzuela titled
"Pagkamoot sa Banuang Tinoboan."

FUENTEBELLA
Manuel T. Fuentebella was the Member of the Philippine House of
Representatives from Camarines Sur's 2nd District from 1925 to 1931 in
the 7th and 8th Philippine Legislature. He is a great orator, writer, and composer.

Early life and education

Manuel Fuentebella was born on October 11, 1889, in Sagñay, Ambos Camarines to
then Ambos Camarines Governor Mariano Fuentebella and Perpetua Tria. His brother
was former legislator ambassador and foreign affairs adviser Jose Fuentebella. He
graduated from the University of Santo Tomas medical school and practiced medicine
in his hometown of Sagñay.

Political and professional career,He was elected to the 7th and 8th Philippine
Legislature as a representative of Camarines Sur and served two terms from 1925 to
1931.

During his term in Congress, he chaired the Philippine Assembly's Committee on


Women's Suffrage and was instrumental in the passage of the law that gave women
the right to vote. He also proposed a hospital to be set up in each municipality and led
medical missions in Camarines Sur.

His first love was writing. An ardent nationalist, he wrote poems in Spanish and Bicol
about love and patriotism, notably "The Arrow" which describes the arrow that native
Bul-og shot against the Lion of Castille and the Eagle of America.

He was also an orator and a composer. His early musical compositions, presented by
nephews and cousins, were staged in the towns.

Manuel stepped away from the public limelight to continue his medical practice, but
politics never left him and he remained an adviser to his brother Jose.

The Dr. Manuel Fuentebella Memorial Hospital in Sagñay is named after him.

Death-He died of a heart attack on February 26, 1955.
