DGA Test Result REFERENCE

The dissolved gas test results for a 2000 kVA transformer show high levels of combustible gases including methane, ethane and hydrogen, indicating electrical faults such as partial discharge or low level arcing. The test results fall under Condition 3, requiring immediate re-sampling and potential outage due to the risk of failure.

Analysis:

The TDCG falls under Condition 3 which indicates a high level of decomposition combustible
gas level. In addition, individual gasses of Methane (CH4) and Ethane (C2H6) are under Condition
3 also Hydrogen (H2) full under Condition 4. This indicates Electrical fault –Low intensity
discharge such as partial discharge and very low level intermittent arcing.

Recommendation:

1. Oil degasification is recommended, Also Quarterly oil sampling for DGA is suggested to
monitoring the build-up of combustible gasses. Monitoring of insulation resistance in the
next preventive maintenance. As per IEEE C57.104-2008, yearly oil sampling for DGA is
needed.

Evaluation Using Dissolve Gas Concentrations Limits Table # 1

Condition 1 -TDCG below this level indicates the transformer is operating satisfactorily. Any
individual combustible gas exceeding specified levels should prompt additional
investigation.

Condition 2 - TDCG within this range indicates greater than normal combustible gas level.
Any individual combustible gas exceeding specified level should prompt
additional investigation. Conduct re-sampling for trending.

Condition 3 - TDCG within this range indicates a high level of decomposition. Any individual
combustible gas exceeding specified level should prompt additional investigation.
Conduct immediate re-sampling for trending, faults are possibly present.

Condition 4 - TDCG within this range indicates excessive decomposition. Continued operation
should result in failure of transformer. Proceed immediately re-sampling with
caution.
