Students needs

Field report #3: ESL

Jennifer Lara

Tarrant County College


The required field experience was taken in Lake worth ISD, located in Lake Worth ISD.

These observations took place in Mrs. Valdez class for ESL which teaches many grades levels

around the district at lake worth ISD.

Layout of class

The student's seats are arranged in groups of 4 students, which there is 4 tables in total.

Students would bring their computer to ESL class and will allow to use when teacher assigned

the computer which they’re able to use when teacher says so. There is various chart such as new

vocabulary, there is many books around and a list of books they read through out the year. The

teacher desk is located at the back side in the right side as walking into the class and on the side,

there is a table for her and chair for when teacher work with students. Which there is also a smart

board in the front of the class and teacher would give a lesson and listen to it. The class look a

very calm class with warm color around the classroom it felt we were welcome and ready to

learn which students enjoy, and the lighting was soft which she put the sheet on the light panel to

not make it as bright.

Lesson

The students are revisiting information that have already been taught. The warm up they

did was something new since every day they have a new one they are required to solve. Students

would be split into groups of 3 or 2 which they would work on assignments on the website they

use. Whenever the students solved the answer correctly there would be a game would have to

compete each other to win. Was able to notice students were motivated to do the problems when

it came with a game when it was answered correctly. Which it makes students more motivated

and they learn about new words.


Resources available

When it comes with different languages there is resources such as a dictionary for in

order to translate and help students with their language to make it easier for them to learn. Most

of the work is provided in English but they do have some resource but are limited. Which I

noticed during this class was mainly to interact with other students and socialize which can help

them guide to learning English and being able to learn new words and know the new meaning of

it. Which the teacher has posters around the classroom with new word they learn that I talk about

earlier where they need to computer and learn new words, which I found it very helpful for them

to learn.

Students needs

The teacher goes around the class and ask students what new words they been learning

and she works with them such as building vocabulary, which also helped the students to put the

word in a sentence. She will make sure understand the new word the been working on, which she

ask students questions about it f they don’t know it she will help them such as reading down the

word and making it easier for the understanding of the word. I noticed the teacher likes checking

for students understanding very often so she knows they are getting the concept of the work is

being provided. Which that will help her to help the students. At the beginning of the class it was

in a whole group for the warm up of the day. After that students work in a small group which

they help each other. The teacher was able to tell me she likes doing small group just so they can

help each other since they might have different ways to teach their peer as she does.
Students needs

The teacher makes sure the students feel welcome in the classroom and not feeling less

for not knowing the language English well. She lets the students know that they have dictionaries

if they need it. Which she advice her students for the staar test to use a dictionary to help them

with the meaning of the words.

After talking with the teacher some of the challenges is that the language Spanish can be

different from what they’re use to which sometimes in the dictionary is different from what they

use. Which she tries her best to figure the meaning of it by explaining the meaning to the

students which that have helped them a lot in it.

Overall I really like this class to observe I was able to see different techniques the teacher

use for each of her students.
