Evaluation Criteria: Design problem using beam sections.
Discussion:
▪ Define, interpret, conceptualise the problem and draw the
relevant sketches.
▪ Formulate strategies for solving the problem.
▪ Identify related formula(e) or method(s) and apply
mathematical techniques and correct engineering theory to
compute the parameters asked.
▪ Calculate the maximum deflection using appropriate
techniques; and explain the ways of maximising or
minimising the deflection if the calculated value is deemed
unsuitable for the application.
▪ Select suitable methods to compute the maximum bending
stresses induced in the beam section and provide 40
comment(s) on how it influences on the overall design.
▪ In a case of limited and permitted deflection, select the most
economical beam section, and provide the necessary
comments pertaining to this choice.
▪ Double check compliance of the design limit by calculating
the actual deflection introduced to the design.
▪ Validation of calculations using software such as excel, and
any other software is required. The use of such software
must be accompanied by explanatory notes.
NB. Calculation steps must be accompanied by explanations and
discussion structured using headings.
Individual Contribution:
▪ Provide detailed summary of contribution of each group
member in separate Appendix reflecting all the tasks
performed to produce the final report.
Oral Presentation:
▪ The general format must be followed. The presenter must
show, confidence, clear explanation of facts, originality and
flow of information, professional conduct, etc. A voice
recording must be appended to the short summary of the
report on the power point presentation. Such a file must be
compressed and be able to be emailed. The presentation is
part of the overall report without which no marks will be
awarded for the report.
NB. In the voice recording, the identities of speakers must be
revealed as roles are exchanged.
Peer Review Evaluation Form:
▪ Each member of the group must complete a Peer Review
Evaluation Form as per given instructions without disclosing
the outcome to other group members. These forms will be
submitted together with the report.

Task: Design of Beam Section
During your in-service training, you were asked by your immediate boss to do a
design modification that requires a complete change of beam sections. The
arrangement is such that a beam is fixed at the wall and simply supported at the
other end as shown in figure 1. The only beam sections available are standard I-
parallel flange sections with Young’s modulus of 200 GPa. In the initial
arrangement, a beam section with the following specifications was used:
60 kN
A
20 kNm
24 kN/m
1m 1m 1m 1m 1m

Requirements
In a report format, document all the calculations step by step with explanatory
notes and all relevant sketches to solve the following:
(i) the maximum permitted deflection.
(ii) suggest ways of minimising or maximising the deflection if in your
opinion the magnitude obtained in (i) is not suitable.
(iii) calculate the maximum bending stress induced in the beam and
comment on your answer.
(iv) If the defection is limited to 0.5 mm, what would be the most economical
standard section? Recalculate the actual deflection for the chosen
economical standard section. Give a comment for your answers.
Validation
• Use any software to validate hand calculated results and explain how the
results were obtained. Should a specific software be used, snapshots of
the results must be included in the report. A similar approach should be
adopted if spreadsheets are used.
NB.
• All sections of the report must be typed, and no hand sketches are
permitted.
• Raw data are to be attached as Appendices.
• Clearly state all the necessary assumptions.
• Show all the necessary calculations with valid explanations.
