Sheet 7 Gyroscope

The document discusses three problems involving dynamics of machines: 1) determining forces on a disk rolling on the floor, 2) determining reactions on fan blade bearings due to gyroscopic effects, 3) determining reactions on aircraft engine supports due to centrifugal force and gyroscopic moment during a turn.

Sheet 7
(1) A homogeneous disk of radius r and mass
m is mounted on an axle OG of length L
and negligible mass. The axle is pivoted
at the fixed point O and the disk is
constrained to roll on a horizontal floor.
Knowing that the disk rotates
counterclockwise at the constant rate ω1
about the axle, determine (a) the force
(assumed vertical) exerted by the floor on
the disk, (b) the reaction at the pivot O.

(2) The blade of an oscillating fan and the rotor of its

motor have a total mass of 250 gm and a combined
radius of gyration of 75 mm. They are supported by
bearings at A and B, 125 mm. apart, and rotate at the
rate ω1=1800 rpm. Determine the dynamic reactions
due to gyroscopic effect at A and B when the motor
casing has an angular velocity ω2=(0.6 rad/s)j.

(3) The shown aircraft flying at 600 km/h and

making a turn of 3-km radius. The aircraft
engine is rotating with a rate ω1=7000 rpm.
The distance between the engine supports
along its shaft is 3 m. The engine rotating part
has a mass of 4000 kg and radius of gyration
0.8 m. Find the reactions on the engine
supports due to centrifugal force and
gyroscopic moment.
