CHAPTER: 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

The internship is a practical learning experience that aims to offer career exploration and
development opportunities in the industry. The main goal of the course is to provide final-
year students with exposure to the market industry and help them acquire practical
experience. By allowing students to enter the real-world industry, they can gain valuable
knowledge and skills that will help them start their professional careers.

During the period of 28th August 2022 to 29th November 2022, I was fortunate enough to
have the opportunity to do a three-month internship at DigiSchool Global, which is an
educational institution. DigiSchool, a school collaboration, provides schools, students, and
colleges in Nepal with the UK-based computer curriculum "Digi" and e-learning
opportunities. Mr. Suman Bashyal was my internship supervisor, and I was responsible for
academic training and research as an intern.

During my internship, I had the privilege to work on several exciting IoT projects that were
specifically designed to be used in workshops and events. The primary objective of these
projects was to showcase the potential of IoT and provide participants with practical, hands-
on experience. At these events, we provided participants with the necessary training and
knowledge to set up and configure IoT devices, develop IoT applications, and integrate
them with other systems. Participants were able to explore the various applications of IoT
technology and how they could be used in different industries.

The IoT projects that I worked on were carefully designed to be engaging, informative, and
easy to understand, even for the students. The response to these IoT projects was
overwhelming and received a lot of positive feedback from participants. Overall, I feel that
the IoT projects that we worked on during my internship were an excellent way to showcase
the power of IoT technology and inspire the next generation of IoT developers.

As an intern, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to design the User Interface (UI) for
website. This was a valuable experience that allowed me to develop my design skills and
learn about the importance of user-centric design. I also learned how to work with web
design tools such as Canva, which is popular in the industry. I also developed my

1
teamwork, communication, and time management skills, which are crucial in completing
projects within deadlines. Moreover, I also supervised SchoolWorksPro which is the all-
in-one digital learning platform designed for educational institutions such as schools and
universities.

1.2 Problem Statement

CHAPTER: 3

BACKGROUND STUDY AND LITERATURE REVIEW

3.1 Background Study

3.1.1 Introduction to IoT

Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects or people called “things” that are
embedded with software, electronics, network, and sensors that allows these objects to
collect and exchange data. The goal of IoT is to extend to internet connectivity from
standard devices like computer, mobile, tablet to relatively dumb devices like a toaster. IoT
makes virtually everything “smart,” by improving aspects of our life with the power of data
collection, AI algorithm, and networks. The thing in IoT can also be a person with a
diabetes monitor implant, an animal with tracking devices, etc. This IoT tutorial for
beginners covers all the Basics of IoT. (Javatpoint, 2016)

Figure 3. 1: IoT Architecture (Javatpoint, 2016)

3.1.2 IoT Ecosystem

In the IoT ecosystem, the user uses smart devices such as smartphones, tablet, sensors, etc.
to send the command or request to devices for information over the networks. The device
response and performs the command to send information back to the user through networks
after analyzed.

10
The IoT is itself an ecosystem of network devices that transfer the data. It is also well
interconnected with Big Data and Cloud Computing.
• Sensing, Embedded processing, Connectivity: The IoT ecosystem senses its
surrounding like temperature, gyroscope, pressure, etc. and make the embedded
processing using devices. These devices are connected through any type of devices
such as GPS, WiFi, RFID, etc. over the networks.
• Smart devices and environment, Cloud Computing, Big Data: The data transfer
or receive through smart devices and environments are communicated through Cloud
Computing or others Servers and stored as Big Data.
• Technology, Software, Application: The IoT ecosystem uses any of different
technologies, software and application to communicate and connect with smart
devices and environment.
• Users or groups of community: The product or services generated by the IoT
ecosystem are consumed by the users or the group of communities to serve the smart
life.

3.1.3 IoT Hardware

IoT Hardware includes a wide range of devices such as devices for routing, bridges, sensors
etc. These IoT devices manage key tasks and functions such as system activation, security,
action specifications, communication, and detection of support-specific goals and actions.
IoT Hardware components can vary from low-power boards; single-board processors like
the Arduino Uno which are basically smaller boards that are plugged into mainboards to
improve and increase its functionality by bringing out specific functions or features (such
as GPS, light and heat sensors, or interactive displays). (Data Flair, 2017)

Figure 3. 2: Arduino Uno (Data Flair, 2017)

11
Another IoT hardware is sensors. An ultrasonic sensor is an electronic device that measures
the distance of a target object by emitting ultrasonic sound waves, and converts the reflected
sound into an electrical signal. Ultrasonic waves travel faster than the speed of audible
sound (i.e. the sound that humans can hear). Ultrasonic sensors have two main components:
the transmitter (which emits the sound using piezoelectric crystals) and the receiver (which
encounters the sound after it has travelled to and from the target). (Jost, 2010)

Figure 3. 3: Ultrasonic Sensor (Jost, 2010)

3.1.4 IoT Software

IoT software encompasses a wide range of software and programming languages from
general-purpose languages like C++ and Java to embedded-specific choices like Google’s
Go language or Parasail. Firstly, because embedded systems have less storage and
processing power, their language needs are different. The most used operating systems for
such embedded systems are Linux or UNIX-like OSs like Ubuntu Core or Android. (Data
Flair, 2017)
A quick overview of IoT Software-
• C & C++: The C programming language has its roots in embedded systems—it even
got its start for programming telephone switches. It’s pretty ubiquitous, that is, it can
be used almost everywhere and many programmers already know it. C++ is the object-
oriented version of C, which is a language popular for both the Linux OS and Arduino
embedded IoT software systems. These languages were basically written for the
hardware systems which makes them so easy to use.
• Python: There has been a recent surge in the number of python users and has now
become one of the “go-to” languages in Web development. Its use is slowly spreading
to the embedded control and IoT world—specially the Raspberry Pi processor. Python
is an interpreted language, which is, easy to read, quick to learn and quick to write.
Also, it’s a powerhouse for serving data-heavy applications.

12
• Data Collection: It is used for data filtering, data security, sensing, and measurement.
The protocols aid in decision making by sensing form real-time objects. It can work
both ways by collecting data from devices or distributing data to devices. All the data
transmits to a central server.
• Device Integration: This software ensures that devices bind and connect to networks
facilitating information sharing. A stable cooperation and communication ensure
between multiple devices.

3.1.5 IoT Connections

IoT connected devices are creating a world in which data is exchanged between physical
objects such as sensors, on-device software and adjacent technologies with other systems
and devices. The essential enabling technology is the connection between the ‘things’ of
IoT which enables these exchanges to happen. Immense value is now being derived across
the value chain as organizations take advantage of new opportunities, new business models
and new revenues which are enabled by IoT connections. (Telenor IOT, 2018)

Different IoT connection types are utilized depending on the requirements of the IoT
devices involved which can range from IoT and connected devices that need to
communicate infrequently with small amounts of data to always-connected IoT devices
that require large amounts of data to be communicated at high speed and with low latency.
There are a wide variety of IoT connections that can be used to connect a thing as small as
a dental implant to something as large as a tractor. (Telenor IOT, 2018)

3.1.6 Things in IoT

Access point
A wireless network device that acts as a portal for devices to connect to a local area
network.

Device
A device is a unit of physical hardware or equipment that provides one or more computing
functions within a system.

Beacons
Small transmitters that connect to Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)-enabled
devices such as smartphones or tracked packages.

13

to understand each other´s data transfer and communication.

Hub
A hardware device that connects other data-transmitting devices to a central station.

Sensor
A device that measures a physical input from its environment and converts it into data that
can be interpreted by either a human or a machine.

3.1.6 Physical World in IoT

Actuator
A component that is responsible for moving and controlling a mechanism or system, such
as opening a valve.

Cyber-physical systems
Integrations of computation, networking and physical processes with feedback loops where
physical processes affect computations and vice versa.

Contactless

A system designed to capture, manipulate, analyze, manage and present spatial or
geographic data.

GPS (Global Positioning System)

A technology created by the US Government that allows for location services.

LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)

A remote sensing technology which uses the pulse from a laser to collect measurements
which can then be used to create 3D models and maps of objects and environments.

14
3.2 Literature Review

There are some related projects and organizations available right now. Many of the systems
have some limitations. From the study of this similar project, I got interested in developing
my project. Some of the related systems of my project are mentioned below.

I have explored many websites which are related to e-learning platforms, first, my attention
caught ‘Neema Academy’. Their application, built by a dedicated in-house team, introduces
blended learning technology, providing theoretical knowledge with practical and example-
based content. The app presents an integrated solution with interactive learning programs
and digital content like on-demand videos, textual content, 3D and animation-based
content, and game-based learning, among others. (Pradhan, 2018) Recognizing the need to
upgrade the conventional learning method in Nepal, Neema Academy strive to create a
digital impact in the existing education system by combining expertise with modern
technologies.

Another similar organization is ‘MySecondTeacher’. They work with schools that offer the
