READING COMPREHENSION PART 1 Read the story of the THE NUTCRACKER (0-5) and decide which heading (A-H) best summarises each paragraph. There are TWO EXTRA headings.
ACT I
0. answer - heading g. (The Traditional Festivity) It is Christmas Eve and a lavish Christmas party is underway. Drosselmeyer, Claras mysterious and eccentric Godfather, arrives with a gift for Clara. He has brought a magnificent new Nutcracker doll as her Christmas present. Everyone who is anyone has been invited to the party. Claras mother, father, grandmother and grandfather and all their friends have brought wonderful presents for the children. 1. The adults go in for dinner and Drosselmeyer gathers the children around him. As a special treat he conjures three life-size dolls to appear and entertain the children. Drosselmeyer presents Clara with her present and she dances with her new nutcracker Doll. 2. Her brother Fritz grabs the Nutcracker and breaks it but Drosselmeyer is able to put it back together again. Drosselmeyer brings the party to an end. After everybody has left Clara creeps back downstairs to find her nutcracker doll. She falls asleep underneath the tree and her dream begins. 3. The clock strikes midnight. Giant rats and mice appear in the living room which has undergone a strange transformation. The Nutcracker doll becomes a life-size Nutcracker Soldier and a great battle ensues. The mice and rats, led by the fearsome King Rat fight with the toy soldiers led by the Nutcracker Soldier. At the height of the battle Clara rushes to the aid

of the nutcracker Soldier. The rats and mice are vanquished and the Nutcracker Soldier is turned into a handsome prince.
4. The living room is transformed again, white and light. Clara and her Nutcracker Prince dance together. The ICE Queen, with her Icicle handmaidens and her corps de ballet of white Snowflakes, dance for Clara. Waving goodbye to the Snowflakes, Drosselmeyer takes Clara and her Prince on their journey to the Kingdom of the Sweets. ACT II 5. Clara flies to the Kingdom of the Sweets where Drosselmeyer has prepared a magnificent celebration in her honour. Dancers arrive from the four corner of the globe; China, Arabia, Russia and Spain are all represented. Mirlitons, Parma Violets, Peonis and giant bags of delicious sweets appear and dance for Clara. Finally the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker prince perform a grand pas des deux. As the celebrations draw to a close Clara grow tired. She wakes to find herself back at home on Christmas eve.
