Degree of Freedom

This document contains structural analysis of a frame structure. It defines degrees of freedom, chord angles, and fixed end moments. It then derives member end moment equations and equilibrium equations for the frame. Solving the system of equations provides member end moment values. Diagrams illustrate the frame geometry and developed shear and moments.

Equilibrium Equations:

𝑀𝐶𝐴 + 𝑀𝐶𝐸 + 𝑀𝐶𝐷 = 0 [𝐴]

𝑀𝐷𝐵 + 𝑀𝐷𝐹 + 𝑀𝐷𝐶 = 0 [𝐵]

𝑀𝐸𝐹 + 𝑀𝐸𝐶 = 0 [𝐶]

𝑀𝐹𝐸 + 𝑀𝐹𝐷 = 0 [𝐷]

𝑀𝐴𝐶 + 𝑀𝐶𝐴 + 𝑀𝐵𝐷 + 𝑀𝐷𝐵 = 405 [𝐸]

𝑀𝐶𝐸 + 𝑀𝐸𝐶 + 𝑀𝐷𝐹 + 𝑀𝐹𝐷 = 135 [𝐹]

Substituting Eqn. [1] through [13] into Eqn. [A] through [F], we get the following system of equations.
2.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐶 + 0.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐷 + 0.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐸 + 0.24𝐸𝐼 Δ1 + 0.24𝐸𝐼 Δ2 = 0

0.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐶 + 2.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐷 + 0.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐹 + 0.24𝐸𝐼 Δ1 + 0.24𝐸𝐼 Δ2 = 0

0.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐶 + 1.6𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐸 + 0.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐹 + 0.24𝐸𝐼 Δ2 = 0

0.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐷 + 0.4𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐸 + 1.6𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐹 + 0.24𝐸𝐼 Δ2 = 0

1.2𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐶 + 1.2𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐷 + 0.96𝐸𝐼 Δ1 = 405

1.2𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐶 + 1.2𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐷 + 1.2𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐸 + 1.2𝐸𝐼 𝜃𝐹 + 0.96𝐸𝐼 Δ2 = 135

Solving above system of linear equations we get the following results:

𝐸𝐼𝜃𝐶 = 𝐸𝐼𝜃𝐷 = −89 kN ∙ m2

𝐸𝐼𝜃𝐸 = 𝐸𝐼𝜃𝐹 = −36.8 kN ∙ m2

𝐸𝐼Δ1 = 644.3 kN ∙ m3

𝐸𝐼Δ2 = 455.1 kN ∙ m3

Substituting These Values back into Eqn. [1] through [13]:

𝑀𝐴𝐶 = 𝑀𝐵𝐷 = 119 kN ∙ m [ccw]

𝑀𝐶𝐴 = 𝑀𝐷𝐵 = 83.4 kN ∙ m [ccw]

𝑀𝐶𝐸 = 𝑀𝐷𝐹 = 23.3 kN ∙ m [ccw]

𝑀𝐸𝐶 = 𝑀𝐹𝐷 = 44.2 kN ∙ m [ccw]

𝑀𝐷𝐶 = 𝑀𝐶𝐷 = −106.8 kN ∙ m [cw]

𝑀𝐸𝐹 = 𝑀𝐹𝐸 = −44.2 kN ∙ m [cw]

Note in equilibrium equations the Eqn. [E] and [F] are found from by crossing a section in first story and second story of the frame
respectively and showing the shear developed in members AC, BD, CE and DF, in terms of columns end moments as follow:

𝑆𝐶𝐸 + 𝑆𝐷𝐹 = 27 [a]

𝑆𝐴𝐶 + 𝑆𝐵𝐷 = 81 [b]

Showing these shears in terms of columns end moments we get:

𝑀𝐶𝐸 + 𝑀𝐸𝐶 𝑀𝐷𝐹 + 𝑀𝐹𝐷
𝑆𝐶𝐸 = 𝑆𝐷𝐹 =
5 5
𝑀𝐴𝐶 + 𝑀𝐶𝐴 𝑀𝐵𝐷 + 𝑀𝐷𝐵
𝑆𝐴𝐶 = 𝑆𝐵𝐷 =
5 5
Substituting these into Eqn. [a] and [b]:

𝑀𝐴𝐶 + 𝑀𝐶𝐴 + 𝑀𝐵𝐷 + 𝑀𝐷𝐵 = 405

𝑀𝐶𝐸 + 𝑀𝐸𝐶 + 𝑀𝐷𝐹 + 𝑀𝐹𝐷 = 135
