GREAT MASSINGHAM COMMUNITY CARS
I am pleased to be able to announce that we have a new addition to the office team. We
said goodbye to Stephen who decided, for personal reasons, to leave us and we all
wished him the very best …..but we couldn’t get rid of him that easily as he still wants to
drive for us when he can which is good news! The new member of the team is Julie
Morters and some users of the scheme will already have spoken with her. It is a relief to
the scheme to be so lucky to appoint someone so speedily. Neil Steed, Chairman

INDOOR BOWLS
March 27th saw the end of the Short Mat/Indoor bowls season.
Colin Whitmore and Neil West won the pairs competition with Jason Fryett and Barry
Hardingham just 2 points behind in second place and Marc Whitmore and Brian Francis
in third.
The singles competition – again Colin progressed to the final against Dave Jeffreys.
Dave came out the winner by just 1 point on the last end!
We were a bit short of players this year and it would be nice to see some fresh players
next time. If you would like to have a go – it’s a bit of fun and nothing too serious –
give me a ring on 01485 520476.
I must just thank everyone who took part and to Debbie for keeping all our Wednesday
evenings available and supplying the prizes. Thanks to Dave Gagen who supplied the
trophies for the pairs competition and all those who supplied food on the last evening.
Hopefully see you all next year with some new players too! Bob Nash

MASSINGHAM COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH ON BBC T.V
On Wednesday 20th March a team from BBC Look East filmed our speed watch team
for “Politics East” which was broadcast on Sunday 24th March. This related to an M.P.
suggesting CSW teams should have more power and those caught speeding by a CSW
team should be given a fine and points on their licence. Currently drivers caught
speeding by CSW teams receive a cautionary letter from the police with a sterner
reminder should they be caught speeding by any other CSW team in the county.
After a number of delays a BBC reporter, a camera man, the King’s Lynn police press
officer, the Speed Watch Team of Bruce Riches, Peter James, Alan Petto and myself
were assembled on the green opposite the church and filming commenced. After a while
it became clear that very few vehicles were entering the village. It was then discovered
that the road through Harpley was closed. Over the course of one hour only 43 vehicles
passed in front of the camera. Usually over 200 an hour would pass through the centre of
the village!
The resulting film was broadcast with Alan Petto being interviewed while holding the
speed gun, Peter James being interviewed as Chair of Parish Council and myself as a wet
and cold CSW Co-ordinator. Peter and I were contacted a couple of days after the BBC
broadcast inviting us to take part in a Channel 5 T.V. debate. Neither of us wished to get
more involved feeling we had done enough already. Norfolk CSW were pleased with the
result. I, for one, do not wish for more power for CSW groups. I feel that our role is
simply to raise awareness and remind drivers of the speed limit through our
village. “hot spots” can then be brought to the attention of the police. Andrew Bickerton

COMMUNITY SPEED WATCH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Help to keep our village safe from speeding traffic by joining our Community Speed
Watch team. Results over the last year demonstrate the need for Community Speed
Watch.
Castle Acre Road is the worst for excess speeding with as many as 15 vehicles clocked
at exceeding 35 mph and 11 travelling at over 40 mph. Weasenham Road is less of a
problem but has the added risk of approaching our primary school and playgroup.
Although less speeding has been recorded on Station Road as many as 286 vehicles pass
in one hour and the speed watch team are more clearly visible.
If you want more information or wish to apply contact me on 01485 520307 or
07765946668. Training will be given and only a couple of hours a week of your time
may be required.. Andrew Bickerton

LITTER PICK 2024: Only seven volunteers turned up on 6th

April to do the annual clean-up of our village. This was very
disappointing as usually we have about twenty enthusiastic
litter pickers to scour the roads, lanes and verges removing
rubbish that had accumulated over the previous year.
Fortunately there was surprisingly little rubbish although a
number of areas were left untouched due to the lack of
people. Those who took part, braving a very gusty wind, were:
Jeanne and Noah Robinson, Vaughan Woodbridge, Sandy and
The bags of rubbish collected. Brian Francis, Tim Baldwin, Mike Jackson, and Rosemary
Bickerton. My thanks to all the above and to The Dabbling

TOAD PATROLS 2024: Once again, toad patrols were

organised locally this year and successfully saved a considerable
number of toads as they migrated to and from local ponds. The
season began early in February with a mild spell, numbers peaking
in the middle of the month and then pausing during colder weather
in early March. The migration continued with fluctuating numbers
until ending towards the end of the month. This year the totals at
Hall Farm (2455) and Great Massingham (86) were similar to last
year but at Lily Pond in Church Lane there was an increase from
348 to 608. Casualties were a small proportion of the totals, on
average about 10%, and as toads were often picked up from the
path of approaching vehicles, they would undoubtedly be higher without these patrols.
Many thanks to the 15 or so volunteers who took part over the 8 weeks of the season.
We were fortunate to have a good number of new volunteers this year and can look
forward to having an enthusiastic crowd to draw upon next year.
The adult toads have now left the ponds and will be returning to their "home ranges" in
hedgerows, woodlands, gardens and other areas that provide shelter and damp shady
conditions. The spawn in the ponds would have hatched by early April and the tadpoles
will develop until they emerge as tiny toadlets in late June - early July. They tend to
leave the ponds en masse over a period of 2-3 days, usually in the early hours of the
morning when traffic is hopefully very light. Few people witness this but it can be a
spectacular sight with the toadlets moving in a seething mass. Tim Baldwin

NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN

UPDATE OF ACTIVITIES
Over the last few months, the Steering Group have
been considering the results of the consultation
activities and how these relate to the existing and
emerging local plan. The aim being to not just repeat
what is in these documents (This is not the purpose
of the NDP), but that we add value to the existing
policy concerning issues that are specific to the community. As you can imagine these
are very mixed and varied.
We have received a small amount of funding for the current financial year that will
cover costs such as website hosting, survey platform subscription and a small amount of
consultancy support.
We will apply for more funding in the new financial year to cover future costs where
possible.
Where do we go from here?
• The Steering will continue to review data and documents.
• We will undertake some more refined public engagement on specific issues.
Some of the community views are very clear and have given us a mandate for
specific areas of work, whilst others are less so. There are also many issues that
are outside of the NDP remit and are for the Parish Council or in fact the
community to progress themselves.
• Set out a programme for communication on progress on the NDP (possibly look
for some extra support from the community to do this). We will discuss this
further at our next meeting.
Whilst we have lost a few of the Steering Group over the progress of the plan, we still
have a solid group of people who can respectfully challenge and are open minded. We
don’t have all the answers and will ensure that where we need more information, we will
engage with the appropriate people, be it, the community, council officers or others.
Just a reminder that we are a group of volunteers doing our best to capture the views of
the Community and reach a consensus.
You’re welcome to learn more of what the Steering Group is doing
by visiting the website: www.greatmassinghamndp.co.uk or for
e-mail updates please contact [email protected].

Message for Parishioners from Rev’d Sue Martin
Dear Friends,
Welcome to May, already into the fifth month of the year, summer is on its
way. We have two Bank Holidays this month, long weekends, a chance to
relax or have a holiday.
I have recently returned from Hong Kong, an opportunity for me to visit family. A long
flight, thirteen hours in the air! The flightpath now has to avoid Russia, Iran and Israel,
so it has been made even longer. The huge planes carrying around 300 passengers are
always full and have facilities such as ‘in-flight entertainment’ on individual seats. After
watching two movies, I get a little fidgety and have to move around, up and down the
aisles getting some extra drinks, anything to distract me from the remaining nine hours
left on the flight. To be fair though I like flying, I love travelling to ‘far off’ places. I
love tracking the flight on the screen and seeing the places we are travelling over at
38,000 feet in the sky, Northern China, the Gobi Desert, Turkmenistan, Turkey,
Bulgaria, Hungary …
What a wonderful world we live in! There are so many different places, huge diversities
and natural phenomena creating geographical sights of wonder and awe.
Hong Kong is a huge mega city, high rise buildings towering into the skies which, during
typhoons sway slightly (not visibly though!) as a means of safety. People’s lives are
lived in close proximity both at work and in communities. Yet you don’t have to travel
far to find beautiful beaches and hillsides covered with shrubs, where hiking and walking
are real fitness opportunities.
However far I travel though, I am always pleased to be home in Norfolk, my roots are
firmly in this place.
Our churches are a continuing presence in our villages, they have been here for many
hundreds of years, dating back to around the eleventh and twelfth centuries. As you
travel around our countryside you can see many of our church towers, a visible presence
of Christianity and a special place in our communities. Many of our churches are open
all day, so when you have a few minutes to spare do come inside. They are places of rest
and quiet, places where we can come together to be with God. In our Christian year, at
the beginning of May, we have Ascension Day, when Jesus was taken back into heaven,
after his resurrection at Easter. What better news could we have that Jesus returned to
show us the way to eternal life.
May is a time to look forward with hope and confidence of summer days, green shoots
emerging and our own lives fulfilled in love and peace with all. Hope you enjoy the
Bank Holidays. Rev’d Sue Martin

GREAT MASSINGHAM PARISH COUNCIL

A brief report this month, however the minutes from all Parish Council meetings are
available on the website www.greatmassingham-pc.info should you wish to find out
more.
Discussion continues around the potential installation of protective matting on the
village greens to address parking issues and minimise damage. Replacement options and
quotations are to be sought for the platform Roundabout at the Play Area, along with
