After knocking and yelling many times, he pushed the door

house was warm. The man decided he would stay and wait
for the owner to come home. As he waited, he gradually

Although they were just pictures, he felt that the faces
were looking directly at him. He felt scared, so he buried
his face in a pillow and fell asleep. He woke up refreshed
the next day. He sat up in the bed and looked around. There
were no pictures on the walls. In fact, the walls were all

10 Symbols help to remind us of
     something important. Let’s look
     at some American s y m b o l s .
     O n e e x a m p l e o f an American
     symbol is the American flag.
Each figure on the flag means something. For example, a
star symbolizes today’s state. One stripe symbolizes one of
the first 13 states of the U.S. There are 13 stripes and 50
stars on the United States’ flag. All the states recognize
that the flag represents them. The United States also uses
an animal as a symbol. The bald eagle is the national animal
of the country. It was chosen as the symbol because it was
a free and independent animal. America wanted people all
over the world to think that Americans were free and
independent like the bald eagle. Through symbols like the
bald eagle and the flag, people inside and outside America
are reminded of the values that American citizens share.

12 There was once a very
     clumsy woman. She was
     always getting small cuts
     and bruises. She especially
     would cut herself frequently
     with the kitchen knife.
      The woman was married to
a man who worked at a big
company. Every day, he came home from work and sat
in the living room, waiting while his wife made dinner.
Unfortunately, dinner would always be delayed, because the
woman would always be hurting her hands.
One day, the man decided to help his wife. He cut a piece
of tape and put a small piece of gauze in the middle of it.
He put the gauze on a cut on his wife’s thumb and taped it
around the finger. The man eventually suggested this idea
at work. That is how Johnson & Johnson began selling Band-
     Aids in 1924.
