1 Introduction
Introduction
Mitsubishi Projxstudio is a management tool for accessing MELSOFT products and
providing an overview of all MELSOFT products, used in the project, within one user
interface.
The user interface consists of two parts. On the left hand side, a tree structure provides an
overview of the project and the associated resources. The right hand side provides the
graphical area for the project components and additional user defined objects.
While the project components are added to the project tree automatically, the user defined
objects are only visible in the graphical area.
To show the relationship between the resource objects, lines can be drawn freely in the
launch pad.

3 Mitsubishi Projxstudio
3.1 User interface
The user interface of Mitsubishi Projxstudio consists of these main components:
1. Menu bar
2. Toolbox
3. Standard toolbar
4. Navigator window
5. Launch pad window
6. Status bar
Only one instance of Projxstudio application can run at once on a single system.
3.1.1 Toolbars
3.1.1.1 Toolbox
If the user checks the “Update project file” the new toolbox settings are saved in the current
project.
If the user checks the “Update default settings” the new toolbox settings are saved as the
default settings for all future projects.
Standard toolbar is a standard application toolbar that is extended with one more icon -
“Global Lock (unlock)”.
The Workspace Control Toolbar allows control of the workspace items and divides into two
areas, the zoom functions and alignment/grouping functions.
The launch pad window provides the graphical area for the project components and
additional user defined objects. Each project icon from the navigator window is additionally
represented in the launch pad window. It can be placed freely on the window area.
The name of the project is displayed above the project icon.
The relationship between different icons can be shown by a user drawn line.
Additionally to the project icons the user can add “user defined” files in the form of a
shortcut. Free positioned texts can be added to the window to detail projects, user files or
the overall project structure.
All objects in the Launch pad window are selectable. They can be selected by clicking the
left mouse button if the cursor is over the object.
The user can select multiple objects in the launch pad window by holding the left mouse
button and dragging across the required objects creating a temporary group, this group can
then be dragged and replaced in another area of the launch pad window.
A “Select All” function is available for lines and project icons and can be invoked from the
Edit Menu. “Select All” results in the selection of all objects on launch pad except user files.
The user files could however, be “rubber banded“ together and moved as a temporary
group, as described above. The user can add or remove one object from a group of select
objects by left-click on the object while holding CTRL key.
Objects are:
1. Project/User file icons
2. Lines
3. Texts
Objects are allowed to overlap and there are no logical relationships defined between them.
Lines are intended to show relations, but user can place them anywhere he sees fit.
3.1.1.6 Grid
The grid is used to position the objects on the launch pad precisely according to size of the
grid. The grid itself is visible but can be switched off.
The grid is always enabled and the user is able to change the size of the grid in the Options
Menu see 3.2.19.3.
If the user changes the size of the grid then the existing objects on the Launch pad will not
be repositioned but inserted objects and moved objects will be snapped to grid.
3.1.1.7 Z-Order
Ordering of objects relative to each other is controlled using the “Choose Control to Select”
facility available from the right mouse button menu.
The user can import an image (bitmap or jpeg) as the background for the Launch Pad
window.
The image is positioned from the Workspace Properties dialogue box shown below.
The user can switch the background image on/off in context menu, via the right mouse
button.
The status bar is a standard status window. It displays the following information:
If the user wants to create a new Project a properties dialogue (Figure 3.2.1.1-1) will be
opened. If there was already an unsaved project file open a message box will be displayed
(Figure 3.2.1.-1). The default name of the new project is “unknown”.
If the creation of a new project was successful a root item in the navigator window will be
displayed (Figure 3.1-1).
Save as dialogue
If the user highlights the Project icon in the navigator, operation of the right mouse button
will open the dialogue shown below in Figure 3.2.1.1-1.
If the user wants to open an existing project a file open dialogue (Figure 3.2.2-1) will be
opened. If there was already an unsaved project file open a message box will be displayed
(Figure 3.2.2-2).
If the active project was not saved before the Save As dialogue (Figure 3.2.1-2) will be
displayed to store the project with a user defined name (the project name will be used as a
default). Otherwise the active project will be saved with its current name
Alternatively the user can save the project from the standard toolbar icon.

The backup function stores the associated projects of all Navigator window items and the
current MPS project (Table 3.2.5-2). The storage format is a standard compressed ZIP
format with a ‘normal’ compression method. The absolute file path must be used for each
file if the backup file is created.
Before Backup, a dialogue is opened and a warning message box dialogue will appear.
There will be text “Ensure all associated projects are closed before attempting backup
procedure.”
Because of incompatibility of ZIP files between WinZip and other applications in the case of
using spanning, a warning message box will appear with text “You are using spanning which
is possibly not compatible with external compression tools.”

dialogue for restore will be opened (Figure 3.2.6-1).
All items in the backup file must be restored in the originally saved absolute path. A directory
must be created if it does not exist. If a file to be restored already exists a standard
confirmation dialogue will be shown to confirm to overwrite the existing file. If the absolute
directory could not be created a message box will be shown to explain that the user must
create and select a different target directory (Figure 3.2.6-3). After confirming the message
box a standard Open dialogue will be opened to create and select a different target directory
(Figure 3.2.6-3).
The recent file list contains the last four opened project files and will be written to a
configuration file “MPS.INI” which is located in windows directory (e.g. “C:\Program

start up with no PLC project.
This command can be invoked from toolbar only. The command is quite similar to “Add PLC
project”, the only difference is project icon that will be displayed in navigator and in launch
pad window. For more description of PLC projects see PLC Project.
An HMI project can be added as a sub project from the root icon, or if the user first highlights
a PLC icon before adding the HMI project, the HMI project can then be added as a sub
project from a PLC icon.
This allows the user to associate the HMI project, either directly to the PLC, if the HMI is
connected to only one PLC, or to the root icon, if for example, the HMI is connected to more
than one PLC.
If the user adds a HMI project the Project Properties dialogue will be opened.
By confirming the Project Properties dialogue a new HMI project icon will be added to the
navigator window as a sub project from the root icon.

by simply moving the cursor to the required position and then noting the displayed values.
If the user selects “About MPS…” an About dialogue is displayed (Figure 3.2.20.2-1).
4 Building a Project
4.1 Opening a New Project
A new project can be opened from the Project Menu as shown.
The Navigator root folder can be named by highlighting the project folder in the Navigator
and using the right mouse button to select “Properties” and then type the required name.
The user simply uses the browse button to locate the path for each application software tool.
In order to make this operation as easy as possible, Projxstudio will automatically declare
the default application path.
Certain applications, for example, GX IEC Developer, E designer, MX4 SCADA,
GT Designer, OPC Server and MR Configurator have application paths which include
version dependant folders. Therefore for these applications, Projxstudio automatically
declares as much of the application path as possible and then the user can browse from this
point to find the executable file.
A PLC project can either be added from the Insert Menu or by selection from the tool bar
Icons.

Locate the project path and select in this case, the SOFTCTRL application icon from the
project folder (fro GX IEC Developer projects), and click “Open” (Figure 4.4-2).
A Modular PLC icon will now appear on the Navigator and the top right hand corner of the
Launch Pad window, as shown in Figure 4.4-4.
The method for adding other projects follows the same operation as described above.
Toolbar icons are always available if the Project folder is highlighted, see Figure 4.4-5;
An hierarchal system operates such that sub project items such as Profibus Networks, FX
ENET (FX Ethernet Networks) and Motion Utility icons are only visible when the relevant
PLC icon is highlighted in the Navigator.
Project properties can be edited by highlighting either icon and using the right mouse button.
Each time a new project is created, a new icon appears on the navigator and in the top right
corner of the Launch Pad Window (see Figure 4.4-6).
These icons can be rearranged by the user in the Launch Pad Window “drawing area.”
System Q Multiple CPU options are shown by adding PLC projects from the “main PLC” icon
see Figure 4.4-8;
In the example project, the user can arrange the project icons anyway in the drawing pane
see Figure 4.4-9.
The Launch Pad window drawing pane can be used for any purpose the user wishes but
one example could be to illustrate the relationships between the project icons.
The user has two “drawing tools” available, “user defined lines” and “user defined text
objects.”
The Options menu (see Figure 4.4-12) allows the properties of lines and text to be changed.
It is possible to either place the user files in the Launch Pad Window as shown in Figure
4.4-13 or associate the files in a folder, specifically assigned to a project icon, as described
in the following section.
The user can now add associated files to the folder via the “Add” button.
The folder now appears on the Navigator, associated with the project icon as shown below;
If the “Show Folder” check box is enabled in the project icon property box (see Figure
4.4.1-6) then the folder is also shown linked to the project icon in the Launch Pad Window,
as shown below:
If the “Draw Link to project icon” check box is disabled, the folder can be placed elsewhere
in the Launch Pad Window as shown in Figure 4.4.1-8 below:
If the “Draw Link to project icon” check box is enabled, then the folder is redrawn to the
project icon.
The default condition is off but by checking the check box in the User File Property Box, the
User File will appear on the Navigator at the last cursor position (it can then be moved using
drag and drop if required).
This dialogue box allows the user to size the image to occupy the required amount of the
Launch Pad window.
The indicated area represents the current active display window to assist the resizing
operation.
The required bitmap or “jpeg” file can be found using the browse button, an example is
shown below.
The background image can be switched, on/off using the right mouse button in the Launch
Pad Window area (see Figure 4.4.3-5).
Project “Save,” “Backup and Restore” operations can be carried out, as described in Section
3.2.
The user wishes to make a copy of the HMI project icon “HMI_1.”
This HMI project is connected directly to the root folder but the cursor is currently with the
selected object as shown.
Having made a copy to the clipboard using either “CTRL+C” or from the “Edit Menu” option,
the user then wishes to paste the copy.
If this operation is attempted at this point the following dialogue box appears because it is
not possible to create a sub project HMI from the cursor position (ie from the project icon
HMI_1).
This also applies to a duplicate operation using either “CTRL+D” or from the “Edit Menu”
option.
In this case the following dialogue box appears:
If the user clicks on the root folder icon, then the paste operation (or duplicate operation)
can be made and is successful as shown below in Figure 4.4.4-4.
4.4.5 Groups
Figure 4.4.5-1 shows a typical PLC and HMI network.
If the user wishes to group these icons then the first operation is to “rubber band” the icons
as shown in Figure 4.4.5-2.
Once the icons have been selected the user can invoke a group by selecting the group icon
from the toolbar. Ensure that the “Toggle Group Display” icon is enabled.
The group can then be named and a custom icon chosen if desired.
The group then appears in the Launch Pad Window as shown below:
If the user clicks on the group icon the following toolbar icon is invoked:
If the user either selects the “Expand Group” button or “double clicks” on the group icon,
then the group is expanded back to it’s original format as shown below.
If the user selects the “collapse group” button then the group returns to the group icon
format.
It is possible to create “groups with groups” so that complex network architectures can be
constructed and the views simplified.
The “Toggle Group Display” button allows the user to change the complete group display
from group icons to expanded groups.
If the user selects all objects as shown then the following toolbar can be used:
This button would align the objects in the horizontal plane as shown in Figure 4.4.6-2, the
horizontal line is “drawn” from the top of the object furthest left:
If the user requires to align the objects with equal spacing between them, then the button
shown above will distribute the objects in the horizontal plane with equal spacing.
The spacing is set by the distance between the first two objects from the left, as shown in
Figure 4.4.6-3 below:
Other toolbar buttons offer the ability to align objects in the vertical plane and align left, right,
top and bottom.
It is also possible to distribute objects vertically.
When carrying out these operations, the navigator tree hierarchy is observed, such that if
the project icon is moved to an invalid position (for example if the icon is to be a child of a
parent icon that is not allowed in the hierarchy) then the operation will not be carried out.
