Teacher’s Notes
Lesson: Irregular Verbs Bingo Level: A1-B1 Time: 20 mins +
Preparation:
- Print and cut out the bingo cards and the bingo calling cards (see step 4).
- Put the calling cards into a container.
- Ideally, students will have studied irregular past simple forms.
- This exercise is currently not suitable for online lessons.
Teaching Method:
Step 1:
- Draw a spider diagram on the board with ‘Irregular Verbs’ in the centre.
- Elicit 3/4 examples of irregular verbs from the students and add them to the diagram.
Step 2:
- Introduce the game by showing them a bingo card and explaining the rules of the game, if necessary.
Step 3:
- Ask either each student or each pair of students to select a bingo card.
- Students should take a minute study the verbs on the card or if they are in pairs, to discuss each past
form and try to identify its base verb.
Step 4:
- There are two options for playing the game:
Option 1: Use the irregular verb calling cards.
Option 2: Use the base verb calling cards. This is more difficult as they need to find the corresponding
past form.
- Take the cards from your container one at a time, calling them out to the students.
- Students try to find the verbs which have been called and mark their card .
- The first student/pair to have a complete vertical or horizontal line should call ‘line!’.
- The game then continues until a student/pair has a full house, at which point they should call ‘Bingo!’.
