a EAR TEST EXERCISES
(a) The Teacher or Parent plays twice a short melody in two-four or three-four time as in the examples below.
(The Pupil must not see the music.) The Pupil imitates its rhythmic pattern by singing, clapping or tapping it
from memory.

(b) The teacher or parent plays on the piano the tonic chord and names the first note of a four-note tune
employing the first three consecutive white notes of a major scale in the key of C,F, or G, as in the examples
below. (The tune may begin on any of the three notes.) He then plays the complete four-note tune twice.
The pupil must not see either the keyboard or the music while the tune is being played.
The pupil is required to play back the same tune on the piano from memory.
The pupil may practice by playing any of the following tunes, changing the keys (from C to F and G, from
G to C and F, or from F to C and G) and singing them in correct pitch to the syllable “lah” or to 1 (Do),
2 (Re), 3 (Mi).

SCALE EXERCISES
These exercises, although not required for the examination, will, if practiced carefully and diligently, HELP the
STUDENT to acquire the ability to play the TECHNICAL TESTS for Grade I Piano Examination EVENLY,
WITH GOOD TONE AND LOGICAL FINGERING.
Although the exercises are in C major, they should be practiced in all the required keys using NORMAL thumb
positions (see examples below the exercises). They may also be practiced hands together.

These writing exercises are essential for the development of a sound understanding of time division. They are based
on the Grade I requirements, and are fundamental for the best preparation of the rhythm tests in both the ear and sight
reading examination of this grade. | |
(a) The pupil should CORRECT the time-values by changing o notes into d. 4 or J according to the
time-signatures. The exercises should then be fingered and used as additional sight reading.
