AP Precalculus Session 8 – FRQ

(Question 4: Symbolic Manipulation)

Directions:
ƒ■ Unless otherwise specified, the domain of a function f is assumed to be the set of all real numbers
x for which f(x) is a real number. Angle measures for trigonometric functions are assumed to be
in radians.
ƒ■ Solutions to equations must be real numbers. Determine the exact value of any expression that can be
obtained without a calculator. For example, log2 8, cos , and sin–1(1) can be evaluated without
2
a calculator.
ƒ■ Unless otherwise specified, combine terms using algebraic methods and rules for exponents and
x5
logarithms, where applicable. For example, 2x + 3x, 52 . 53, 2 , and ln 3 + ln 5 should be rewritten in
x
equivalent forms.
ƒ■ For each part of the question, show the work that leads to your answers.

a. The functions g and h are given by

g x 2 2x 3

x
h x arctan
2
i. Solve g(x) = 8 for values of x in the domain of g.

ii. Solve h x for values of x in the domain of h.

b. The functions j and k are given by
j(x) = ln(x + 1) – 2ln x + ln 5
k(x) = sin2(2x)
i. Rewrite j(x) as a single natural logarithm without negative exponents in any part of the expression.
Your result should be in the form ln(expression).
ii. Rewrite k(x) as an expression involving powers of cos x (not cos(2x)) and no other trigonometric
functions.
c. The function m is given by
m(x) = cos2(3x).
1
Find all input values for m in the interval 0, that yield an output value of .
