•Report on Half Duplex Communication System•

 Brief Introduction :

Communication is a fundamental aspect of human interaction, and

technology has continually advanced to facilitate efficient data exchange.
One such advancement is the Half Duplex Communication System, which
allows transmission and reception of data in one direction at a time. This
report explores the construction, working, and significance of a half duplex
communication system based on LEDs and switches, as well as provides an
in-depth analysis of full duplex communication, a comparison with full
duplex, and a concluding overview.

 Title of Micro-Project

“ Build a circuit to represent Half Duplex Communication System”

 Aims/Benefits of the Micro-Project:-

 The aims of this Micro Project:

 To study about the half duplex communication system.

 To study about the working of half duplex communication system.
 To build a circuit to represent duplex communication system.

 Course outcomes Addressed:-

 Use relevant frequency range for different communication system.

 Half duplex system can be various communication applications.

 Literature Review :

The historical development of half-duplex communication circuits

can be traced back to the early days of telegraphy and early
telephone systems. While technology has advanced, half-duplex
communication remains a practical choice in scenarios where
simultaneous two-way communication is not necessary, or where
it simplifies the system design. In the digital age, half-duplex
communication is still prevalent in various forms, such as text
messaging, and many two-way radio systems.
 Circuit diagram :

 Circuit Details :

The LED-based half duplex communication system consists of two main

components: LEDs and SPDT switch. Each component represents one end of
the communication link. The construction is relatively simple:

 LEDs: Two LEDs, one for transmission (LED 1) and one for reception
(LED 2), are used at each end. These LEDs serve as visual indicators
of data transmission and reception. When data is transmitted, the LED
1 lights up, and when data is received, the LED 2 lights up.

 SPDT Switch: It is used for both transmission and reception of data,

which is placed alongside the LEDs. This switch allow users to
manually control to transmission of data or reception of data.

 Resistors of value 330 ohm is used in this circuit are connected to

LED and ground.

 Working of the Circuit :

The working of the LED-based half duplex communication system is as
follows:

 Transmission: When a user wishes to transmit data, we press the SPDT

switch at the transmitter side. This action sends a signal which activates the
LED 1, indicating that the system is transmitting data.

 Reception: When a user wishes to receive data, we press the SPDT switch
at the receiving side. This action sends a signal which activates the LED 2,
indicating that the system is receiving data.

 This system allows transmission and reception of data but only one
direction at a time. When the data is transmitting, the receiving side is
always off which not receive the data because the data flows in one
direction at a time.

 Half Duplex Communication System :

Half duplex communication is a communication method that enables data

transmission and reception, offering several advantages and Applications:
 In half duplex mode, both the devices can send and receive the data and
also can utilise the entire bandwidth of the communication channel
during transmission of data.

 Half duplex systems are simpler to design and operate because they
require fewer components and less complex circuitry.

 In wireless communication, half duplex systems can be more energy

efficient because devices don’t need to transmit and receive signals
simultaneously, reducing overall power consumption.

 Half duplex systems are often more affordable to implement and

maintain compared to full duplex systems. This makes them suitable for
applications with budget constraints.

 Some applications of half duplex communication systems are Walkie-

talkie, two way radio that has a push-to-talk button, Browsing the
internet, Universal Serial Bus (USB), etc.

 Comparison between Full Duplex and Half Duplex:

Sr. Full Duplex Half Duplex

No.
1 - Simultaneous transmission - Only one direction of data flow
and reception. at a time.

2 - Efficient use of bandwidth. - Less efficient use of bandwidth.

3 - Lower latency. - Higher latency due to switching

between transmit and receive
modes.

4 - Higher throughput. - Lower throughput compared to

full duplex.

 Conclusion:
In conclusion, LED-based half duplex communication systems are suitable for
specific applications where the advantages, such as energy efficiency and cost-
effectiveness, outweigh the limitations like limited range and susceptibility to
interference. The choice of such a system should be based on the specific
requirements and constraints of the intended application. As technology
continues to advance, addressing these limitations could potentially expand the
range of applications where LED-based half duplex communication systems can
be effectively employed.
