Activity 3

Lectures remain a significant teaching method despite the availability of innovative alternatives, as they help develop essential skills for the digital age. Teachers can enhance learning by providing feedback, creating supportive environments, and reorganizing large classes into smaller groups for collaborative learning. Additionally, the apprenticeship model can benefit university teaching, with elements being effectively implemented online, while various learning theories like Behaviorism and Connectivism offer different perspectives on teaching and learning.

ACTIVITY 3.

3
1. Lectures are still widely used as a teaching method in different institutions around the world, and they
have been for centuries. While there are many alternative and innovative teaching methods that can engage
students more effectively, lectures are still an important part of some courses.
2. Lectures can play a role in developing some of the skills needed in a digital age, such as information
literacy, knowledge organization and management, critical thinking, and creativity.
ACTIVITY 3.4
1. Teachers can provide learners with feedback on their contributions to the discussion. This feedback can
help learners refine their ideas and develop deeper conceptual understanding. Teachers can create a safe and
supportive learning environment that encourages learners to take risks and explore new ideas. This can
involve setting ground rules for discussion and modelling respectful and constructive dialogue.
2. To reorganize a lecture class of 200 or more students to develop group work and the development of
conceptual learning, the following could be done. Break the class into smaller groups. Divide the class into
smaller groups of 10-20 students to facilitate more meaningful group discussions and collaboration. Assign
group projects or activities that are related to the lecture content and require students to apply and integrate
the concepts they are learning. Use technology to facilitate group work. Use online platforms or tools to
facilitate group work and collaboration outside of the classroom.

ACTIVITY 3.5
1. Learning to teach in a university can definitely benefit from an apprenticeship model. Like an
apprenticeship, teaching in a university often involves on-the-job training or mentoring by experienced
faculty, along with practical experiences in teaching various courses, engaging with students, and
participating in scholarly activities.
2. Yes, some elements of apprenticeship can be done just as well online as in class. For instance, online
learning platforms can provide opportunities for learners to interact with experienced professionals and
mentors, participate in real-world projects, and receive feedback on their work.
ACTIVITY 3.7
1. The Behaviorist approach focuses on the external environment and the behavioral outcomes produced
through stimulus and response mechanisms. The strength of this approach is that it enables teachers to
effectively teach and reinforce specific behaviors and skills to learners. The weakness is that it lacks the
focus on critical thinking and deep understanding, which is necessary for higher-level learning.
2. Connectivism draws upon several existing teaching and learning models such as Constructivism,
Cognitivism, and Behaviorism while also adding some unique components. Connectivism states that
knowledge is created through a network of connections between people and information, and learners must
develop skills to make and maintain connections to access new information.
