SUBJECT: Progress Report on Community Service

PURPOSE

Technical Writing, appointed as ENGL4021, constitutes an integral part of the academic

curriculum across various programs offered at the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce, with a
particular emphasis on the biology program. Professor Pier LeCompte Zambrana leads this course,
which focuses on empowering students to adeptly create technical documents with meticulous
attention to detail, coherence, and accuracy. The class syllabus incorporates a wide array of
technical writing elements, including minutes, oral presentations, resumes, and other assignments.
Culminating in a Progress Report, students are tasked with applying these technical writing skills
to contribute to the propagation of knowledge and awareness within the realm of agriculture.

The core goal of the Progress Report is to foster a sense of responsibility among students while
concurrently promoting education and awareness about agricultural practices. Moreover, the
"Huerto Atabey" initiative, spearheaded by the association "Coalición de Estudiantes Pro-
Agricultura" (CEPA), serves as a focal point for illustrating the adverse effects of contamination
on the environment. This collaboration underscores a broader commitment to nurturing ecological
consciousness and accountability within the student community.

INTRODUCTORY SUMMARY

During the semester, students taking part in the course ENGL 4021, were tasked with engaging in
eight hours of community service aimed at environmental enhancement. This service entailed a
collective effort, culminating in a group progress report to be given by semester's end. Activities
included weeding, watering, and planting at the Atabey Garden, found on the grounds of the
University of Puerto Rico at Ponce. The team consisted of Valeria Pomales, Gian Rodriguez, Aniel
Negron, Anna Venegas, and Carlos Rodriguez, each contributing their efforts towards the common
goal of enhancing and supporting the garden.

WORK COMPLETED

All five members of the group completed 8 hours of community service at the Atabey Garden at
the University of Puerto Rico Ponce. We were supervised by members of the organization CEPA
which provided us with the guidance to complete each task that needed to be done. Some of the
tasks we performed included:

I. Removing invasive plants from the planters:

a. We removed excess weed from the planting boxes by using our hands and tools
such as rakes, hoes, and shovels. We also made sure to fully remove the roots of
the weeds so they would not grow back.
b. The objective of removing weeds is to eliminate any competition for nutrients
among the plants that are prioritized for growth.
II. Watering:
a. We made sure to water all the plants in the garden with a hose.
b. We watered the plants with the right amount for growth, ensuring not to overwater
them to prevent drowning.
III. Planting and soil preparations:
a. We prepared pots with nutrient-rich soil and planted seeds of vegetables and
flowers. Once the seeds were planted, we placed the pots in Atabey's greenhouses
and organized them by species.
b. We also placed new soil in the planting boxes using a hoe to spread the soil and
level the surface.
IV. Cleaning the garden:
a. We cleaned the greenhouse with a rake to prevent it from being overgrown by the
local flora.
b. We cleaned the tires used for planting by removing every undesired plant that was
growing in them. The purpose of doing this is to make space for planting new
plants.
c. We took out trash and recycled plastic bottles and other plastic items that were no
longer of use.
V. Donating:
a. We made some donations to contribute to the activities and maintenance of the
garden.
b. We donated seeds of different vegetable species and flowers such as passion fruit,
tomato, and coriander, and soil for planting.

AESTHETIC IMPROVEMENTS

A. The garden underwent a transformation with clearly defined pathways and neatly arranged
planting beds. To distinguish different crops, appropriate signage or markers were utilized.

B. Although aesthetics may not be the primary focus in agriculture, there are practical benefits to
maintaining a visually pleasing environment. Well-maintained fields facilitate better crop
management, streamline access, and enhance overall farm organization. Moreover, a tidy and
visually appealing farm can positively impact the well-being of those working within it.

C. On the process of planting Anna Venegas and Aniel Negrón planted pumpkin, cucumber and
different types of tomato. Gian Rodríguez cleaned the boxes, the green house of plants and the
tires. Carlos Rodríguez also participated in the planting and the composting of the garden.
Valeria Pomales cleaned the garden and helped to make it look more attractive and together
watered the area to help the seeds plants to grow more efficiently and beautifully.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

Several issues were encountered in the community service progress report during the
maintenance of the Atabey garden. It is crucial to discuss these problems to improve organization
for future events and/or cleanups. CEPA exhibited a lack of organization and planning in some
maintenance events due to the absence of personnel from the association, leaving the students
without any form of leadership and operation.
CONCLUSION

The progress report provided us with insight into how essential gardening is on campus.
Additionally, by applying the characteristics of technical writing, students had the opportunity to
participate in community service throughout the second semester of January 2024. We thank
CEPA for providing us with the opportunity to participate in the garden and to share their
knowledge with students. Even with difficult trials like the weather, lack of labor and other
external obstacles, the garden was fruitful. Finally, the community service was successfully
completed, achieving the preservation of crops in the garden.

EVIDENCE

To solidify our work, we include in this segment our service logs. The service logs provide
evidence of our contributions to the Atabey garden. This evidence proves the accuracy and
quality of our Progress Report, enhancing the credibility of our statements. Each service log
document contains the tasks each member did, the hours completed and the signatures of the
CEPA supervisors. We also included photos taken by the classmates that were also taking part in
the community service.
