III. ESSAY
1. What do you think was the reason Rizal wrote the original Noli Me Tangere in Spanish, the language of
the colonizers.
Noli Me Tangere's purpose is "reformation," because simply wanted to offer Filipinos equity and equal
treatment under the law, the opportunity to a proper education, and good governance from Spanish
authorities, therefore Noli Me Tangere is written in Spanish to arouse the thoughts of the Spanish
authorities and religious orders.
2. Is the Noli Me Tangere anti-clerical and anti-patriotic? Defend your answer.
Anti-clerism is the rejection of ecclesiastical authority. If we examine Noli, we may conclude that it is
anti-clerical. Rizal had been an outspoken opponent of the friars, the religious authorities during Spanish
colonialism. He does not blame the Catholic Church or government authorities, but rather the abusive
friars who abused the status they possessed.
3. Whom do you prefer, Elias or Crisostomo Ibarra? Why?
Elias has a far more distinct character than Ibarra; he seemingly embodies Rizal, and despite his lack of
formal education, the injustices faced by his family have sharpened his mind. Furthermore, despite his
situation, he is constantly optimistic. He does not seek retribution or compensation; instead, he employs
all available resources to reduce the number of offenders and unhappy victims of social injustice. Unlike
Ibarra, who, as a matter of fact, is a very intelligent guy, Simoun has turned to pursue revenge and
revolution for his own selfish gain. As a result, I favor Elias.
