C. TARGET MEAN STRENGTH OF CONCRETE:
Required Target mean strength in 28 days, For a Tolerance Factor of 1.65 (Using IS : 456-2000) and
Standard Deviation equals to 5.0 (Using IS: 456-2000), the Target Mean compressive Strength
for the specified characteristic cube strength is:
a) f'c k = fck + 1.65s b) f'c k = fck + X
= 40 + 1.65 x 5.0 = 40 + 6.5
= 48.25 N/mm² = 46.5 N/mm²
Therefore,Target Mean Strength = 48.25 N/mm²
The higher value is to be adopted. Therefore, target strength will be 48.25N/mm² as 48.25N/mm² > 46.5N/mm²
APPROXIMATE AIR CONTENT
From Table 3,the approximate amount of entrapped air to be expected in normal (non-air-entrained) concrete is 1.0 percent for 20mm
nominal maximum size of aggregate

D. SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO ( as per IS-456 ) :-

From Fig.1 the free water-cement ratio required for the target strength of 48.25N/mm² is 0.38 for OPC 43

Grade curve .This is lower than the the maximum value of 0.40 prescribeb for severe' exposure for rainforced
concrete as per Table 5 of IS 456.
0.38<0.4 Hence OK

E. SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT :-

From table 4, maximum water content = 186 litre ( for 25 to 50 mm slump range) for 20mm aggregate.
Estimated water content for 100mm slump = 186 + ( 6.0 / 100 ) * 186
The Required water content Established by trial = 197.16 kg
As super plasticizer is used, the water content can be reduced up 20 percent and above.
Based on trails with super plasticizer water content reduction of 17 percent has been achieved.
Hence the arrived water content = 197.16 x 0.83 = 163.64 kg
= 163.64 ≈ 164kg
F. CALCULATION OF CEMENT :-
Water Cement Ratio = 0.38
Cement Content = 164 / 0.38 = 431.58 kg/m3
Cement Content = 432 kg/m3

432 >0kg/m3 ( As per specification IS:456 ) , hence OK

Cementitious material content = 432 x 1.10 = 475 kg/m3
Water content = 164 kg/m3
So, Water-cement ratio = 164 / 475 = 0.34
Fly ash @ 0% of total cementitious material content = 475 x 0 = 0 kg/m3
Cement ( OPC) = 475 - 0 = 475 kg/m3
Saving of cement while using fly ash = 432 - 475 = -43 kg/m3 , and
Fly ash being utilized = 0 kg/m3

G. PROPORTION OF VOLUME COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT :-
From table 5, volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm size aggregate and fine aggregate
(Zone I) for water cement ratio of 0.50=0.60
In the present case water cement ratio is 0.38 Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate is required to be
increased to decrease the fine aggregate content. As the w/c ratio lower by 0.12 , the proportion of
volume of coarse aggregate is increased by 0.024 .( at the rate of -/+0.01 for every +/-0.05 change in water
cement ratio )
Therefore volume of coarse aggregate is = 0.624
For Pumping or desirable cohesive and workable mix Coarse aggregate Reduce
by 10% Hence = 0.62 x 0.9= 0.562
Volume of fine aggregate = 1 - 0.56 = 0.438

H. MIX CALCULATION :-
A) Volume of concrete = 0.99 m3 { Volume of entrapped air in wet concrete=0.01m3, Net Volume=(1-0.01)m3}
B) Volume of cement = (Mass of cement / Specific gravity of cement ) * 1/1000
= ( 432 / 3.15 ) * 1/1000
= 0.137 m3

C) Volume of fly ash= (Mass of fly ash/specific gravity of fly ash)*1/1000

= ( 0 / 2.20 ) * 1/1000
= 0.000 m3

C) Volume of water = (Mass of water/specific gravity of water)*1/1000

= ( 164 / 1)*1/1000
= 0.164 m3 `
D) Volume of admixture = (Mass of admixture/ specific gravity of admixture)*1/1000
= ( 4.32 / 1.20 )*1/1000
= 0.0036 m3
E) Volume of all in aggregate = A – (B+C+D)

= {(1-0.01)-0.137+0.164+0.0036)}
= 0.685 m3
F) Volume of 10mm aggregate = 0.685 x 0.225 x 2.89 x 1000

= 445 kg/m3
G) Volume of 20mm aggregate = 0.68500 x 0.337 x 2.91 x 1000

= 672 kg/m3
H) Volume of C.Sand = 0.685 x 0.438 x 2.75 x 1000

= 826 kg/m3
I) Volume of R.Sand = 0.685 x 0.000 x 2.76 x 1000

3) Maximum size of aggregate : 20mm
4) Degree of Quality Control : Good
5) Slump of Concrete : 100mm
6) Explosure Condition : Moderate

B. MATERIAL TEST DATA:

1) Cement : Ultratech
2) Admixture : BASF 8352
3) Admixture Percentage : 1 %
4) Source of Course Aggregate : --
5) Source of fine aggregate ( C.Sand ) : --
6) Source of fine aggregate ( R.Sand ) : 0
7) Specific Gravity of Cement : 3.15
8) Specific Gravity of C.Sand : 2.75
9) Specific Gravity of R.Sand : 2.76
10) Specific Gravity of Coarse Aggregate (10mm) : 2.89
11) Specific Gravity of Coarse Aggregate (20mm) : 2.91
12) Water Absorption of Fine Aggregate ( C.Sand ) : 1.98
13) Water Absorption of Fine Aggregate ( R.Sand ) : -
14) Water Absorption of Coarse Aggregate (20mm) : 1.54
15) Water Absorption of Coarse Aggregate (10mm) : 1.43

C. TARGET MEAN STRENGTH OF CONCRETE:

Required Target mean strength in 28 days, For a Tolerance Factor of 1.65 (Using IS : 456-2000) and
Standard Deviation equals to 5.0 (Using IS: 456-2000), the Target Mean compressive Strength
for the specified characteristic cube strength is:
f'c k = fck + 1.65s
= 40 + 1.65 x 5.0
= 48.25 N/mm²
Therefore,Target Mean Strength = 48.25 N/mm²

D. SELECTION OF WATER CEMENT RATIO ( as per IS-456 ) :-

From table 5 of IS 456, maximum Water cement ratio= 0
Based on Experience, adopt water cement ratio is 0.38
0.38<0,hence OK

E. SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT :-

From table 2, maximum water content = 186 litre ( for 25 to 50 mm slump range) for
20mm aggregate.
Estimated water content for 100mm slump = 186 + ( 6 / 100 ) * 186
= 197.16 litre
As super plasticizer is used, the water content can be reduced up 20 percent and above.
Based on trails with super plasticizer water content reduction of 17 percent has been achieved.
Hence the arrived water content = 197 x 0.83 = 164 Liter

F. CALCULATION OF CEMENT :-
Cement Content = 431 kg/m3

431 >0kg/m3 ( As per specification IS:456 ) , hence OK

Cementitious material content = 431 x 1.10 = 474 kg/m3
Water content = 164 kg/m3
So, Water-cement ratio = 164 / 474 = 0.35
Fly ash @ 0% of total cementitious material content = 474 x 0 = 0 kg/m3
Cement ( OPC) = 474 - 142 = 332 kg/m3
Saving of cement while using fly ash = 431 - 332 = 99 kg/m3 , and
Fly ash being utilized = 0 kg/m3

G. PROPORTION OF VOLUME COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT :-

From table 3, volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm size aggregate and fine aggregate
(Zone 1) for water cement ratio of 0.50=0.60
In the present case water cement ratio is 0.38 Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate is required to be
increased to decrease the fine aggregate content. As the w/c ratio lower by 0.00 , the proportion of
volume of coarse aggregate is increased by 0.00 .( at the rate of -/+0.01 for every +/-0.05 change in water
cement ratio )
Therefore volume of coarse aggregate is = 0.60

For Pumping Coarse aggregate Reduce by 10% Hence = 0.60 x 0.9 = 0.54
Volume of fine aggregate = 1 - 0.54 = 0.46

H. MIX CALCULATION :-
A) Volume of concrete = 1 m3
B) Volume of cement = (Mass of cement / Specific gravity of cement ) * 1/1000
= ( 431 / 3.15 ) * 1/1000
= 0.137 m3

C) Volume of fly ash = (Mass of fly ash/specific gravity of fly ash)*1/1000

= ( 0 / 2.20 ) * 1/1000
= 0.000 m3

C) Volume of water = (Mass of water/specific gravity of water)*1/1000

= ( 164 / 1)*1/1000
= 0.164 m3
D) Volume of admixture = (Mass of admixture/ specific gravity of admixture)*1/1000
= ( 4.31 / 1.20 )*1/1000
= 0.004 m3
E) Volume of all in aggregate = A – (B+C+D)
= 1 - (0.136+0.163+0.003)
= 0.696 m3
F) Volume of 10mm aggregate = 0.696 x 0.22 x 2.89 x 1000
= 452 kg/m3
G) Volume of 20mm aggregate = 0.696 x 0.34 x 2.91 x 1000
= 683 kg/m3
H) Volume of C.Sand = 0.696 x 0.44 x 2.75 x 1000
= 839 kg/m3
I) Volume of R.Sand = 0.696 x 0.00 x 2.76 x 1000
= 0 kg/m3

I. INGREDIENT PER CUM :-

1) Cement = 431 kg/m3

2) Fly Ash = 0 kg/m3
3) Water = 164 kg/m3
4) 20 mm AGG = 683 kg/m3
5) 10 mm AGG = 452 kg/m3
6) C. Sand = 839 kg/m3
7) R. Sand = 0 kg/m3
8) Admixture = 4.31 kg/m3
9) Water Cement ratio = 0.38
