DSS (Decision Support System)
What is DSS? A decision support system (DSS) is a computer-based
information system that aids decision-making in various fields,
such as agriculture, finance, healthcare, and education.
What is the main characteristics of DSS? DSS facilitates decision-making at various management levels
by providing information, tools, and a flexible interface, as well
as supporting various types of decisions and having a
comprehensive data structure.
What are the phases of DSS? 1. Intelligence Phase: Identifies situations, opportunities, and
problems.
2. Design Phase: Develops solutions and analyzes necessary
actions.
3. Choice Phase: Selects the best solution and makes a decision.
4. Implementation Phase: Implements the chosen solution and
monitors its effectiveness.
Component of DSS 1. Data Management: Provides relevant and organized data for
analysis.
2. Model Management: Offers various models to analyze data
and support decision-making.
3. Communication: Facilitates interaction between users and the
system.
4. Knowledge Management: Stores and manages knowledge to
support better decision-making (optional component).
1. Facilitates decision-making for managers: Helps managers
What is the purpose of DSS?
make informed decisions on semi-structured problems.
2. Optimizes decision effectiveness: Improves the likelihood of
making successful decisions.
3. Overcomes cognitive limitations: Enables users to process
and store more information than they could on their own.]
Mention the type of DSS and its 1. Structured DSS: Supports well-defined, repetitive decisions
information needs using reports, statistical analysis, and simulations.
2. Semi-structured DSS: Aids partially defined decisions
requiring human judgment, employing expert systems,
forecasting models, and multi-criteria analysis.
3. Unstructured DSS: Assists with complex, ambiguous
decisions leveraging intuition, internal/external data, group
decision support systems, electronic conferencing, and
artificial intelligence.
Decision Support Systems (DSS) empower businesses to make informed decisions. These systems come in
various types, each with its own strengths. Their core components – data management, model management,
communication, and knowledge management (optional) – work together to provide information, tools, and
support for effective decision-making. By utilizing DSS, companies can enhance their chances of success by
overcoming cognitive limitations and making optimal decisions. Ultimately, employing the right DSS can
significantly contribute to achieving organizational goals.
