A basic hydraulic circuit consists of

a reservoir to hold the hydraulic fluid,

PUMP MOTOR
a pump to energize the fluid, and an

actuator to utilize this energy. For

VENTED RESERVOIR'

our application, accuators can be motors

or cylinders.

The pump must be sized correctly and

driven at sufficient speed to develop

the capacity and pressure required by

the actuator for the load. The pump-

FROM VENTED ing action generates a flow of oil

RESERVOIR
out of the pump and causes a partial

vacuum at the inlet.

The reservoir is vented to atmosphere

OUTLET through an air breather and atmospheric

pressure forces oil from the tank to

performance is very sensitive to inlet

conditions. Cavitation will occur if

For this reason designers cannot

achieve fine filtration of the oil

entering the pump and must be sat-

isfied with very course strainers.

Later in this discussion, we will

explain how the drillmaster main

pump circuit overcomes this pro-

blem by "SUPERCHARGING" the inlet.

To protect the circuit from overpressure,

DIRECTIONAL

a relief valve is placed at the pump dis-

charge. This valve is mechanically ad-

by moving the spool in and out of

It is possible for one pump to supply

are as many as 9 spools in one valve

Hydraulic motors use the pump output

to develop rotary motion. Hydraulic

cylinders, on the other hand, convert

the pump output into linear motion.

In both cases pump capacity (in gal-

speed of the actuator.

The actuator must be selected for the

load demand and be compatable with the

pump performance. The system pressure

results from whatever resistance is

PRESSURE experienced moving the load.

To understand hydraulic cylinders,

in general, and the drillmaster feed

5000* system, specifically, it is necessary

to know the relationship between hy-

draulic pressure in pounds per square

PSI LBS
inch (PSI) and force in pounds (LB).

LOGD
Oil enters the cylinder and moves the

piston. As the cylinder load increases,

more hydraulic pressure is necessary to

200 PSI 1000 PSI continue to move the piston.

If the hydraulic pressure is measured

with a gauge in pounds per square inch

(PSI) and the area of the piston is

calculated in square inches, we can de-

11 termine the resistance against the pis-

1000 PSI
5 SQ IN ton rod by multiplying these two figures

together.

As an example, consider a feed down

pressure gauge reading of 1000 PSI

on a drillmaster. We know that the

19.6 SQ. IN. 19.6 SQ. IN.
feed cylinder piston area is 19.6

square inches in the feed down di-

PRESSURE
rection. Since there are two cylin-

39.2 SQ IN x IWO LB /SQ. IN OR 39200 LBS. ders, the total area is twice this

or 39.2 square inches.

The effective feed down force of the

rotary head would be 1/2 due to the

mechanical disadvantage of the feed

chain arrangement. This is evident

in that the feed cylinder piston rod

moves 1/2 the length of the tower when

the rotary head travels the full length.

DRILLMASTER FEED SYSTEM ARRANGEMENT

Friction and other losses will reduce

the force another 10% on the drillmaster

feed.
Ingersoll• Rand Company 1976
Printed in U.S.A.
Page 6

In the previous example, when the di-

rectional valve is moved to retract

the cylinder piston rod, the rotary

head travels up the tower. In this

case, we must subtract the area of

the piston rod to calculate load.

The effective piston area is now

25 2 SQ IN x 1000 LB /SQ IN OR 25,200 LBS
12.6 square inches or 25.2 square

inches for both cylinders.

Again because of the mechanical dis-

advantage, the weight at the rotary

head would only be 11,340 lbs. By

this method it is possible to weigh

a string of drill rods using the

drillmaster feed system pressure

DRILLMASTER FEED SYSTEM ARRANGEMENT
gauges.

In the previous examples, the cylinder

return line back pressure is considered

insignificant and can be ignored. How-

ever, if back pressure becomes excessive,

the previous examples would have to be

—5 TON

recalculated. Back pressure is usually

detrimental to any hydraulic circuit

600 Psi 100PSI

because it reduces the work producing

BEAR IN MIND
THAT ALL OF THE
DRILLMASTER SYSTEMS
ARE SOME VARIATION OF
THIS BASIC CIRCUIT.
The hydraulic circuit just discussed is a basic

reservoir, pump, valve, and actuator application.

It enables the drillmaster operator to raise and

lower the rotary head. The drillmaster "FEED

HOLD BACK" circuit will be explained in the slow

feed pump section along with the other circuits

needed for this drill.

The drillmaster reservoir is located on There is a sight gauge that should be

ment.)

An oil temperature gauge on the tank

indicates when to use the hydraulic

oil cooler. The cooler should not be

operated when the temperature of the

hydraulic oil is below 100°F. The

operator should start the cooler when

the oil temperature reaches approxi-

mately 140°F. Failure to use the

cooler at oil temperatures above 140°F

will result in a faster rate of oil

oxidation and necessitates a more fre-

quent oil change.

These are straight forward pump-valve-

actuator circuits. One point to make

about the directional valve spool is

the difference between a motor and cy-

linder spool. When a motor is running

full speed it would be detrimental to

MOTOR-CYLINDER SPOOL
suddenly block the lines in and out.

The inertia of the load would try to

power the motor and turn it into a pump.

The directional valve spool solves this

problem by porting the motor lines to-

gether in neutral providing free wheel-

ing until the motor coasts to a stop.

MOTOR SPOOL

ROTATION ANL 9 SPOOL VALVE. CIRCUIT

The bypass rotation circuit is powered by the large section

of the double pump through the nine spool valve. Again we

have a single actuator (rotary head motor) being powered by

two separate pump sources. Ingersoll-Rand Company 1976

The bypass rotation provides rotation when stripping the

hole using the fast feed. It is also a back up system if

anything should happen to the main pumps. Only one rotating

circuit should be energized at a time. When one valve is

engaged the other must be in neutral.

jack crossheads. The lock checks hold

oil in the jack cylinders until they are

opened by oil pressure from the pump

through the 9-spool valve.

C)Ingersoll-Rand Company 1976
Printed in U.S.A.
Page 44

The lock checks protect against a sudden

loss of oil out of the cylinders which

would upset the drill. It is important

when lowering the drill that the engine

speed be held at a maximum. This provides

as much oil as possible from the pump to

the cylinders to prevent chattering.

LOCKING
CHECK
VALVES

The lock check valves are attached to the

jack housing.

The drill should be lowered slowly and no more

••••• Ff than 2 jacks should be retracted at one time.

,A

Chattering occurs because the weight of the

machine forces the cylinder closed faster than

oil can be supplied from the pump to the op-

posite side of the piston. If this happens the

lock check valve will start to chatter and pre-

mature failure will result.
