Notes:
1. Electricity and cogeneration: For all energy sources, information is estimated based on the gross
electrical output of the plants and standard efficiencies. Some actual information is included where it
is reported to the Ministry on an annual or monthly basis.
2. Almost all liquid biofuel production in New Zealand is blended with fossil fuel oil products. By
International Energy Agency (IEA) definition, it is used in oil production and as a result is included in oil
product statistics.
3. Geothermal direct use figures for small and medium users are based on the report An Updated
Assessment of Geothermal Direct Heat Use in New Zealand 2008, prepared by the New Zealand
Geothermal Association. These values were reviewed and updated in 2020 by GNS Science. These are
supplemented by direct data collection for large users.
4. Estimates of industrial woody biomass use are derived from Scion’s Wood Processing Database.
Residential use is based on census data.
5. Solid Biofuels are made up of woody biomass and charcoal. The collection of charcoal imports data
was introduced in 2020.
