Why do you want to do this course?

(Please complete this section using complete sentences.)
I would like to note that despite not holding an English language teaching degree, I have been teaching
English for a while, and it has evolved into my passion. I am keen on enhancing my professional
development through getting international certification courses. I believe that teachers serve as significant
role models for their students. Hence, this course will be a great motivational factor to boost my
confidence as a teacher. Additionally, I aspire to work overseas – at one of international schools.
Therefore, I am currently completing my TESOL and pursuing a level 5 certification. I am genuinely
convinced that attending CELTA will unlock new opportunities and provide a broader perspective on
teaching.

Where did you hear about this 2 of my students suggested to enrol in CELTA. Also, an ex-colleague
course? of mine, Aidan Smyth, encouraged me by telling the potential
benefits of getting this certification.

Part A: Grammar
Describe the differences in meaning between the following pairs of sentences.

i) He remembered to post the letter.

He remembered posting the letter.

___When remember is used with to + infinitive it implies that you remember to do a certain action before
you do the action. So, in this case, in the first sentence, the person remembered to post the letter that he had
been told to do so. In the second sentence, however, there is another structure – remember + gerund. When
the verb remember is used with a gerund, as is given in the second sentence, the person remembered posting
the letter after doing the action. The second sentence suggest that the situation is a memory, and the person
recalls doing so.

ii) When I got my first job, I left university.

When I got my first job, I’d left university.

In the first sentence, there is a Past Simple, Past Simple sentence structure. When this structure is used, there
are consecutive actions: first, the person got his/her first job, and later, he/she left university. In the second
sentence, there is a Past Simple, Past Perfect Simple sentence structure which implies that the action of
leaving university happened before getting the first job.

iii) Would you like a coffee?

Do you like coffee?
When “would” is used as a modal verb, it indicates whether possibility, permission, or requests.
In this specific example, “would” indicates a request. The person asking the question wants to
know if another person/people want to drink some coffee. In the second example, on the other
hand, the person asking the question is asking a general question, willing to get information if
another person/people like coffee in general.

iv) If I had enough money, I’d buy a new car.
If I have enough money, I’ll buy a new car.

In the first sentence, 2nd conditional structure is used, implying that the situation is hypothetical,
indicating wishes and dreams of a person for the present/the future
In the second sentence, 1st conditional structure is used. 1st conditional is known to be a real
conditional. Comparing the 1st sentence to the 2nd one, it can be said that while for the 1st sentence
writer the situation is merely a dream, for the 2nd one’s it is more likely to happen.

Part B: Grammar
Look at the text on the following page and identify the four errors. Give a brief explanation of each error.

Example error: Corrected form: information

informations Explanation: information can’t be plural as it is an uncountable noun

My name is Fawaz Kosmin. I would like some informations about your english courses. I have been
having lessons since four years and would like to take the First Certificate examination to help me get
well-paid job. Could you also tell me how much is the accommodation?

Error 1: english Corrected form: English

Explanation: : English is a proper noun; hence, the letter “e’ has to be

capitalized

Error 2: having lessons Corrected form: taking lessons

Explanation: When you, as a student, have lessons, you’re occupied with

learning a particular subject and learning from it. On the other hand, taking

lessons means to receive instructions for a particular subject from a teacher. In

this context, taking lessons is more suitable.

Error 3: since Corrected form: for

Explanation: Since is used to specify a point in time when particular action

began; whereas, for indicates the duration of an action. In this context, the
writer implies on the period, not the time it started.

Error 4: Could you also Corrected form: Could you also tell me how much the accommodation is?
tell me how much is the Explanation: This is an indirect question. In indirect question verb be is placed
accommodation?
at the end of the sentence, which is called inversion.

Part C: Vocabulary

Past F: Writing
Below write approximately 300 words describing a successful learning experience you have had. Based on
this experience, explain what you think the qualities of a good teacher are.
Please ensure this answer is in continuous prose.
All our lives, we learn, regardless of our age: a newborn learns how to react to certain situations - hunger,
sleeplessness, or discomfort - to elicit a reaction. A toddler learns how to manage things around them and
communicate with people, while a schoolchild learns subjects. As a 27-year-old teacher, I can say that I
have been learning throughout my life. Though not all these experiences hold the same value—some were
positive, while others were relatively negative. I am going to write about a particular learning experience
that has a special meaning for me due to its positive and successful outcomes.

First and foremost, I'd like to mention that 2024 started rough, but I made a promise to improve myself this
year. Therefore, I enrolled in a TEFL course to enhance my professional skills. During the period I spent
there, I observed a great example of teaching that contributed to my skills. At the beginning of the course,
every participant was not able to realize the mistakes they were making in their teaching. The methods
taught by the instructor have significant value, as the application of these methods during my personal
lessons showed a significant improvement in the quality of my lessons and students' results.

The reason I believe it was a successful learning and teaching process is the methodology. The division of
lessons and breaks, breakdowns of materials, the resources used, and active participation, thanks to the
instructor's energy, made the process enjoyable despite the prolonged hours spent in the training center.

As of January 23, 2024, I am completing my third week. Even though the course is not yet finished, it has
already provided me with valuable insights.

Regarding the qualities of a good teacher, I believe a good teacher must have the following qualities: first
and foremost, a teacher must remind themselves of their profession and be an example for their students.
Punctuality, responsibility, objectiveness, common sense, the ability to make quick decisions, creativity, and
preparedness are crucial. Moreover, a teacher must always strive for development and self-improvement. In
an ever-changing world, especially with the impact of modern technology, information is spreading, new
inventions are being made, and new methodologies are being discovered every day. Bearing that in mind, a
teacher has to strive for the better all the time and never stop learning.

In general, there is no concrete formula for a good teacher. Every teacher is unique in their own way.
Finding your way of teaching and interacting with students, understanding the demands of a particular
group, and being prepared for various scenarios would help.
