Computers have become part of our daily lives. We visit shops, offices, and places of scenic beauty
with the help of computers. We pay bills prepared by computers. We read newspapers and magazines which
have been produced on computers. We receive letters from and send letters to almost every part of the world
with the help of computers. And we can even learn foreign languages on computers.
What makes a computer such a miraculous device? Each time you turn it on, with appropriate
hardware and software, it is capable of doing almost anything you ask it to. It is a calculating machine which
speeds up calculations: it can add, subtract, multiply, and divide with lightning speed and perfect accuracy.

mothering Sunday. Mothering day later became mother's day. It is the last Sunday in March.
In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson and congress agreed that the second Sunday in May should be
observed as Mother's Day in America. On that day, children give their mothers flowers, presents and cards to
show their love to their mother. Americans spends millions of dollars to buy mother's day gifts. Clothes,

It might sound strange to you but these are some important rules. If you want to pass examinations,
then study grammar. However, if you want to become fluent in English, try to learn English without studying
too much grammar because that will only slow you down and confuse you. You will think about the rules
when creating sentences instead of speaking naturally like a native speaker. Some native speakers do not
know so many grammar rules as non-native students do.
Everyone can speak at least one language whether they are intelligent, or lack some brain power. This
could be achieved by being surrounded by that language at all times. You may notice that there are also some
people who study abroad and learn very little. That is because they go to an English speaking school, but find
friends from their own country and don’t practice English. Some others can speak English well because they
live in an English speaking environment.
Therefore, why don’t you surround yourself with English? Make rules with some friends that you will
only speak English when meeting up for a coffee, for example. You can also carry around an iPod and listen
to English as much as possible.
1. You don’t need to study too much grammar to be fluent in English.
2. You need to be quite intelligent to study a language well.
3. Living in an English speaking environment, people will not learn the language better.
4. An iPod may be useful for you to improve your listening skill.

economically try to find out alternative sources of power. According to Professor Ma Burnham of the New
England Institute of Technology, we have to start conserving coal, oil and gas before it is too late; and nuclear

It is great to have pen pals. In my opinion, friendship is among the meaningful relations in our life. Many of
my friends have pen pals and they correspond regularly. A friend of mine once got a letter from the school
mailbox and told me a lot of interesting things about her pen pal. That made me excited and I was eager to
have one. Therefore, I got online and did some chatting. I was lucky to get to know a very nice Australian girl.
Her name's Jenny. She and I are the same age and we have a lot of things in common.
Although my English was not very good at first, we were able to understand each other quite well. My English
has improved a lot. Jenny has never been to Viet Nam. However, she thinks well of our country and our
people. When she comes to Viet Nam, I will take her to some interesting places, especially our World
Heritage Sites, such as Ha Long Bay, Hoi An Ancient Town, My- Son Tower. Through her mail, she tells me
about her country. Thanks to Jenny, I know more and more about Australia. I hope to be an exchange student
in Australia some day and we will be able to meet.

In Britain, natural gas is the most popular fuel for heating homes, and for cooking. It is piped all over the
country from the gas fields, below the North Sea. Natural gas is used chiefly as a direct source of energy
although it is also used in the chemical industry. At the moment the supply is plentiful, but it will be running
short by the end of the century, and will run out during the 21st century unless new supplies are found. We
could do without natural gas, as coal as can be used as a substitute, and there should be enough coal to last for
several centuries. However, it is a form of energy which is not only cheap, but also highly efficient.

How can scientists predict earthqukes ? Earthqukes are not scattered anywhere but happen in certain
areas. They happen in places where pieces ofthe earth's surface meet. For example, earthquakes often occur
on the west-coast of North and South America, around the Mediterranean Sea, and along the Pacific coast of
Asia. Another way to predict earthquakes is to look for changes in the earth's surface, like a sudden drop of
water level in the ground. Some people say animals can predict earthquakes. Before earthquakes people have
seen chickens sitting in trees, fish jumping out of the water, snakes leaving their holes and other animals
acting strangely.

The internet is a great place to look up information. The same information may be found in libraries,
but the Internet makes information available 24 hours a day. Furthermore, information on the Internet may be
more up-to-date, and some would never be found in a library. The Internet is not a replacement for libraries,
but it is an extremely valuable supplement.
When you are connected to the Internet, you are ready to start searching. The basic step for finding
what are you looking for in a fast and easy way is: Find a search engine. A search engine is a useful tool for
looking up information on the Internet. Basically, it is an Internet site that will do the searching on the Internet
for you. There are many different search engine and websites for you to use. They are divided up into several
categories for your convenience. This will allow you to select a site that will be better for searching different
topics.

We can develop alternative sources of energy, and unless we try we’ll never succeed. Instead of
burning fossil fuels we should be concentrating on more economical uses of electricity, because electricity can
be produced from any sources of energy. If we didn’t waste so much energy, our resources would last longer.
We can save more energy by conservation than we can produce for the same money. Unless we do research
on solar energy, wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric plants … our fossil fuels will run out and we’ll all
freeze or starve to death. Several countries are spending much more time and money on research because the
energy from the sun, the waves, and the winds last forever. We won’t really survive unless we start working
on cleaner and safer sources of energy.
1. Fossil fuels are renewable sources of energy.
2. Electricity can be produced from the sea.
3. The energy from the sun, the waves and the winds will never be used up.
4. We really need to worry about cleaner and safer sources of energy.

One of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century was a method of using natural gas for
cooking and heating. Large amounts of natural gas found in the United States, usually several thousand feet
below the surface of the earth.
For many years after natural gas first discovered, it was thought to have no value. Finally, however,
people began to understand its uses and to find ways of storing it and of moving it from place to place.
Today natural gas is stored in large tanks and used for lighting, cooking, and heating. In many ways,
natural gas is one of our finest fuels. It is cheap and can be used for cooking without making the room hot. It
can be moved easily from one place to another through long pipelines, some of which are hundreds of miles in
length.
