Part 7. Read the following passage and decide if the statements that are TRUE or FALSE. (1m)
It might sound strange to you but these are some important rules. If you want to pass examinations,
then study grammar. However, if you want to become fluent in English, try to learn English without studying
too much grammar because that will only slow you down and confuse you. You will think about the rules
when creating sentences instead of speaking naturally like a native speaker. Some native speakers do not
know so many grammar rules as non-native students do.
Everyone can speak at least one language whether they are intelligent, or lack some brain power. This
could be achieved by being surrounded by that language at all times. You may notice that there are also some
people who study abroad and learn very little. That is because they go to an English speaking school, but find
friends from their own country and don’t practice English. Some others can speak English well because they
live in an English speaking environment.
Therefore, why don’t you surround yourself with English? Make rules with some friends that you will
only speak English when meeting up for a coffee, for example. You can also carry around an iPod and listen
to English as much as possible.
1. You don’t need to study too much grammar to be fluent in English.
2. You need to be quite intelligent to study a language well.
3. Living in an English speaking environment, people will not learn the language better.
4. An iPod may be useful for you to improve your listening skill.

More than two hundred years ago, the term 'environmental pollution’ was quite strange to people.
They lived healthily, drank pure water, and breathed fresh air. Nowadays, the situation is quite different.
People all over the world are worried about things that are happening to the environment. Actually it is man
that is destroying the surroundings with many kinds of wastes. Everybody knows that motorbikes and cars
emit dangerous gases that cause poisonous air and cancer, but no one wants to travel on foot or by bicycle.
Manufactures know that wastes from factories make water and soil polluted, but they do not want to spend a
lot of their money on treating the wastes safely. Scattering garbage is bad for our health, but no one wants to
spend time burying it. Is it worth talking a lot about pollution?

Air pollution is a serious problem in many cities. Motor vehicles, factories and other sources create so much
air pollution that it may hang in the air like dirty fog. Air pollution threatens the health of the people who live
in cities. City wastes cause water pollution when they are poured into the waterways. These wastes kill fish
and make some areas unfit for swimming. In addition, many large cities have difficulties in disposing of their
garbage. The amount of garbage grows each year, but places to put it are quickly filling up. Citizens,
governments, industries, scientists, and business people must work together in different ways to gradually
reduce pollution. For example, most cities have introduced recycling programmes.
1. Motor vehicles and factories are among some sources of air pollution.
2. Air pollution is the only problem of the environment mentioned in this passage.
3. Garbage disposal is a problem in many large cities.

Part 7: Read the following passage and decide if the statements that follow are TRUE or FALSE. (1,0m)
4. Everyone must cooperate to reduce pollution.

In Britain, natural gas is the most popular fuel for heating homes, and for cooking. It is piped all over the
country from the gas fields, below the North Sea. Natural gas is used chiefly as a direct source of energy
although it is also used in the chemical industry. At the moment the supply is plentiful, but it will be running
short by the end of the century, and will run out during the 21st century unless new supplies are found. We
could do without natural gas, as coal as can be used as a substitute, and there should be enough coal to last for
several centuries. However, it is a form of energy which is not only cheap, but also highly efficient.

We can develop alternative sources of energy, and unless we try we’ll never succeed. Instead of
burning fossil fuels we should be concentrating on more economical uses of electricity, because electricity can
be produced from any sources of energy. If we didn’t waste so much energy, our resources would last longer.
We can save more energy by conservation than we can produce for the same money. Unless we do research
on solar energy, wind power, tidal power, hydroelectric plants … our fossil fuels will run out and we’ll all
freeze or starve to death. Several countries are spending much more time and money on research because the
energy from the sun, the waves, and the winds last forever. We won’t really survive unless we start working
on cleaner and safer sources of energy.
1. Fossil fuels are renewable sources of energy.
2. Electricity can be produced from the sea.
3. The energy from the sun, the waves and the winds will never be used up.

Today natural gas is stored in large tanks and used for lighting, cooking, and heating. In many ways,
natural gas is one of our finest fuels. It is cheap and can be used for cooking without making the room hot. It
can be moved easily from one place to another through long pipelines, some of which are hundreds of miles in

are worried about what are happening to the environment.
Actually, man is destroying the suroundings with many kinds of wastes. Motorbikes and cars have
produced dangerous gases that cause air pollution. Wastes from factories have made water and soil polluted.
