1 Requirements

1.1 Density
The typical density for virgin polypropylene (unfilled) is 0.90 g/cm³ according to ISO 1183. Compounded or
filled will have a variety in density.

The tolerance is requirement on density:

• ± 1% for <20% mineral/reinforced filled or unfilled.
• ± 1.5% for ≥20% mineral/reinforced filled.
• ± 2 % for thermoplastic materials, with/without fibre reinforcement, in combination with gas
injection.

1.2 IKEA PP pre-defined standard grades

Approved trade name grades are available from IKEA. Before a new trade name grade may be used, it shall be approved by IKEA.
The requirement for PP injection moulding standard grades are stated in Table 1.

IKEA standard grades

Extrusion grades or similar quality approved by IKEA shall be defined in product documentation.

Note: If the Material set contains an “or similar quality approved by IKEA of Sweden” grade it means that
the Material set contains a grade that is not defined in the table. When “or similar quality approved by IKEA
of Sweden” is specified the Material data sheet (MDS) describe the values for verification, see section 2. It is
important that “material producer” and “material code” is stated as “Designation” in both Material set and
in verification documents.

2 Requirements for verification

The requirements shall be verified according to the following:
• The identification is Technical Data Sheets (TDS).
• Verification documents are not to be uploaded in Connect. Upon request, made available by the
IKEA supplier to IKEA, within 3 working days.

3 Definitions
Table 2: Definitions
Term Definition
Extrusion Extrusion is a manufacturing process where raw plastic is melted and formed into a
continuous profile
Injection Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for producing parts by injecting a plastic
raw material into mould
Material data Also known as Product Data Sheet (PDS) or Technical Data Sheet (TDS) and which
sheet (MDS) describes physical properties as listed in Table 1 in this document.
Material set Material combinations specified for each part of the product, stated in the Technical
Description.
PPCO Block copolymer, has co-monomer units of ethylene arranged in blocks in regular
patterns along the polypropylene molecule. Ethylene improves impact properties and
decrease stiffness compared to homopolymer.
PPHO Homopolymer, can be referred to as the default state of the polypropylene materials.
Consist of one monomer, propene, has high stiffness but is limited in impact properties.
PPRA Random copolymer, opposed to block copolymer, has the co-monomer units of ethylene
arranged in irregular or random patterns along the polypropylene molecule. Main
property compared to homo and block copolymer is transparency and has generally
lower stiffness than both homo and block copolymer and impact properties slightly
better than homopolymers.
r A lower case “r” before a term means that it is recycled material (based on both pre-
consumer and post-consumer waste). For example rPET.
Technical Data The TDS normally contains typical properties with the purpose to communicate
Sheet (TDS) capabilities by the producer of raw material. (This kind of document is also sometimes
known as “Product Data Sheet” or “Material Data Sheet”).
