Arts and Crafts of Mindanao
Described as the “Land of
Promise”.
In 2016, Mindanao is home to the
16th President of the Philippines,
Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
National and international
political and economic events
were held in Davao City, in which
the culture and arts of the region
become more popular.
What are the arts of Mindanao?
As one of the largest islands in
the Philippines, Mindanao is the
melting pot of tribes and
culture.
Moro and the Lumads were the
pioneer inhabitants, who resisted
the Spanish colonization, strongly
retain the influence of Malayo-
Polynesian arts and culture.
What are the arts of Mindanao?
Thus, it can be observed that
there is a resemblance in the
arts of the ethnic groups of
Mindanao with that of its
southern and eastern
neighboring countries -
Indonesia, Malaysia, and the
Polynesian Islands.
Elements and principles used in Mindanao Art
Bagobo and Manobo
Bagobos live in southeastern
Mindanao, particularly in the
Davao regions.
They imitate the the metal
artworks of the Moros (Muslim
warriors), which they produced
an ornate tradition of weaponry.
Bagobos also weave abaca
cloths and baskets.

Manobos, on the other hand,
live in many provinces of
Mindanao like Agusan del Sur,

dressed among the ethnic
tribal groups.

The word Manobo is the
Hispanic form of Manuvu,
which means “people”.
The Manobos are in the upland
of Sarangani Island, Agusan del
Sur, Davao provinces, Bukidnon,
and North and South Cotabato.

Mandaya
Another ethnic group in
southeastern Mindanao is known
for their beautiful clothing
decorations are the Mandayas.
They call their cloth dagmay. It is
made of vegetable-dyed abaca
fibers which are tie-dyed.
Various flora and fauna
patterns are visible in the
dagmay.

Mandaya women wear dagum
or cotton blouses.
These blouses are decorated
with geometric and animal
designs and are usually in red,
black, and blue.

Lumad are strongly influenced
by the Malayo- Polynesian arts,
which made the places of
Lumad look like they are
provincial extensions of our
southern and eastern
neighboring countries -
Indonesia, Malaysia, and other
Polynesian Islands.

The designs of okir, torogan, lantaka, and sarimanok are
regarded as high-quality folk arts in Asia.

Tausug and Joloano are sometimes
called the “people of the current”.
Because many of them live near
bodies of water where they could do
fishing.
Tausug are the first tribe in the
archipelago to be converted to Islam.
Historically considered as the ruling
people of the ancient Sultanate of
Jolo.

Have their own version of Torogan.
Torogan is an ancestral home of

northernmmost of Mindanao, another
group of Muslims are the Yakan.
They live in Sulu, Basilan, and
Zamboanga.
