INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
1. This examination paper consists of FOUR (4) questions. Answer ALL questions.
2. All answers to a new question should starts on a new page.
3. All the calculations and assumptions must be clearly stated.
4. Candidates are not allowed to bring any materials other than those allowed by the

This examination paper consists of SIX (6) printed pages including the front page.
CONFIDENTIAL 212211/BTF1513
(a) Your friend wonders if a ring she bought is really pure gold and instead she consults
you, as an engineering technology student. You weigh the ring in air and find Fg =
0.158 N. Then using a (massless) thread, you weigh the ring while submerged in
water and .get 0.150 N. So based on your analysis, is the ring pure gold or not. Justify
your answer accordingly.
[10 Marks]
[C02, P03, C3]
(b) A 10.0 kg mass sliding on a frictionless horizontal surface at 7 .00 m/s hits a spring that
is attached to a wall. The spring has a spring constant of 5000 Nim.
(i) Determine the maximum compression of the spring.
[4 Marks)
[C02, P03, C3]
(ii) Determine the speed of the box in the above problem when the spring had a
compression of 0.100 m.
[4 Marks]
[C02, P03, C3]
(iii) Suppose the box springs back off of the spring with no loss of energy, after
sliding on the frictionless surface, it encounters another level surface with a
coefficient of friction of 0.200. Based on the analysis, justify the box slide on
this surface before coming to rest.

(a) The calorimeter cup is made from 0.15 kg of aluminium and contains 0.20 kg of
water. Initially, the water and the cup have a common temperature of 18.0°C. A 0.04
kg mass of unknown material is heated to a temperature of 97. 0°C and then added to
the water. The temperature of the water, the cup and the unknown material is 22.0°C
after thermal equilibrium is re-established. By ignoring the small amount of heat
gained by the thermometer, calculate the specific heat capacity of the unknown
material.
[10 Marks]
[C02, P03, C3]
(b) The wood burning stove which having emissivity of 0.90 and surface area of 3 .50 m2
is being used to heat a room. The fire keeps the stove surface at a constant 198°C and
the room at a constant 29°C. Determine the net radiant power generated by the stove.
[5 Marks]
[COl, POl, C3]
(c) On sunny day, if the water in a swimming pool absorbs 2.00 X 109 J of heat from the
sun, determine the change in volume of water on that particular sunny day.
Given info:
Coefficient for linear expansion of concrete is 12 X 10-6 (0 C)·1
Coefficient for volume expansion of water is 207 X 10-6 (0 C)·1
Latent heat of fusion for water is 3.35 X 105 J/kg
Specific heat capacity ofaluminium is 9.00 X 102 J/(kg. 0 C)
Specific heat capacity of water is 4186 J/(kg. 0 C)
Thermal conductivity coefficient of stainless steel is 14 J/(s.m. 0 C)

(a) Strong winds can apply a significant enough force to tall skyscrapers to set them into
a back and forth motion. The amplitudes of these motions are greater at the higher
floors and bare observable from the lower floors. It is said that one can even observe
the vibrational motion of the Sears Tower in Kuantan on a windy day. As the Sears
Tower vibrates back and forth, it makes about 8.6 vibrations in 1 min.
(i) Determine the frequency and the period of vibration of the Sears Tower
[5 Marks]
[C02, P03, C3]
(ii) If the vibrations on the windy day increase about 35%, determine the
frequency and period of the Sears Tower.

[C02, P03, C3]
(b) Wave motion arises when a periodic disturbance of some kind is propagated through
an elastic medium.
(i) Describe FOUR (4) properties of motion
[4 Marks]
[COl, POl, C2]
(ii) Explain about wave interference
[2 Marks]
[COl, POl, C2]
(iii) Using sketches, define TWO (2) types of interference
