Activity Guide 3

Final Engineering Report and Presentation

Task

The main objective of an engineering report is to document the processes and outcomes of a
design task. It is a way of communicating to your client your thorough understanding of the
problem and how the design process is involved in providing solutions to the pre-defined
problem.

Your task is to write and to present an Engineering Report for your project. Your Engineering
Report is a documentation of how your team was able to reach your final design and convince
your client of its merits. The Engineering Report should include the following parts:
● Cover page (containing the project title, project team/company name, date of
submission)
● Executive Summary (Summarize what was asked for, what you accomplished and
how it was accomplished. Include your main results and conclusions. Put this section
first in the report but write it last)
● Preliminary Pages (Table of Contents, List of Figures, List of Tables, Acronyms)
● Introduction - describe the project, its objectives, and scope
o Project Description
o Objectives
o Scope of Work
● Approach and Methodology - discuss the overall approach to implement the project
from inception to completion. A flowchart with estimated duration (in days or weeks)
per activity would help in ensuring clarity. In this section, include also:
o Design Considerations - specify design assumptions and considerations
including project constraints (technical, economic, environmental, socio-
cultural, etc)
o Data Requirements - inputs needed for the analysis and design
o Tools and software - analysis and design software to be used (STAAD, ETABS,
HEC-RAS, etc, if any)
o Codes, standards, and main references
● Mobilization
o Obligation of the Parties - briefly describe all the parties involved and their
obligations
o Office Details - describe the location of your office
o Organizational Structure - shows graphically the line of authority and
relationships between the team members

o Roles and Responsibilities - identify the team members and describe their
o Risk Management Plan - identify potential problems that may occur and
outlines the steps that can be taken in order to minimize the impacts that they
will cause. The plan shall be implemented to avoid delays during project
implementation.
● Detailed design and analysis documentation – you are expected to at least demonstrate
the following:
o Assumptions made to justify design decisions
o An overview of the final design
o Ability of the final design to meet engineering specifications
o Cost Analysis/Bill of Quantities
o Gantt Chart
o Ethical Considerations
o Safety
● Conclusion and Recommendations - Summarize what you have done and identify areas
to improve on
● Bibliography – include all references following a consistent referencing style
● Appendices – include detailed processes, standards, raw data, or detailed diagrams as
needed

For this semester, your final engineering report should be in PDF format to be submitted in a
designated portal in UVLê.

The final engineering report shall also be presented by the group for a maximum of 15
minutes.

Assessment Criteria

Criteria Percent Exemplar

The report contains all the necessary components,
presented at an appropriate level of detail and
thoroughness of documentation.

Depth of understanding of the project brief, and a

Technical Content 60%
logical analysis of the problem is clearly demonstrated.

Methodology, design, and analysis sections exhibit

depth and breadth of research on what is suitable for the
project needs and context
Writing is at or near professional level, focused and
Writing 20% well-organized, exhibits coherence through the effective
use of leading sentences and transitions between
paragraphs and sections.

were minimal such that these errors do not interfere with
the understanding of the report.

The report was clearly organized using headings that

match the Table of Contents.

Clear, organized, and engagingly delivered presentation

Presentation 20% of the contents of the inception report, which makes
good use of the allotted time.
