FEDERATION LTD (KMF)

INTRODUCTION

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is a dairy cooperative in Karnataka, India, known
for its Nandini brand. Established in 1974, it operates under the Ministry of Cooperation,
Government of Karnataka, with milk collected from member farmers and sold under the
Nandini brand. KMF, the second-largest milk cooperative in India, has 14 milk unions and
1,500 member cooperatives across Karnataka. Despite occasional involvement in Karnataka
politics, particularly during elections, KMF continues to serve consumers across urban and
rural markets. Recent controversies include allegations of attempts to merge Nandini with
Amul, sparking protests and social media campaigns. Celebrities like Rajkumar and later
Puneeth Rajkumar have served as brand ambassadors for Nandini products, showcasing its
popularity and reach.
PRODUCT RANGE

Karnataka Milk Federation which markets its milk, milk products and sweets under the
name of Nandini has wide range of milk and its products. Pasteurized milk, toned milk,
standardized milk, Ghee, Butter milk, Curds, Butter, Paneer, Chocolates, Mysore Pak are
some.

ICE CREAM

There are 50 varieties of Nandini's Ice cream are available in the market and was launched
on March 18, 2024. A high-end ice cream parlours of the brand was also launched on Mantri
Mall, Malleswaram, Bengaluru on August of 2021.

BAMUL, which stands for Bangalore Urban, Rural & Ramanagaram District Co-operative
Milk Producers Societies Union Ltd., is a dairy cooperative affiliated with the Karnataka
Milk federation (KMF). BAMUL operates in the Bangalore urban, Rural and
Ramanagaram districts of Karnataka, India, and is responsible for milk procurement,
processing, and marketing activities. History: Established in 1975, BAMUL was formed
with the aim of organizing and empowering milk producers in the region. It operates as a
cooperative society, owned and governed by dairy farmers. The cooperative was created to
improve the socio-economic conditions of dairy farm. By providing them with a platform to
collectively market their milk and enhance their bargaining power in the dairy industry.

As a cooperative society, BAMUL complies with various Labor laws and regulations
governing employment practices. These laws ensure fair treatment, rights, and welfare of
workers. Some relevant labour acts that may apply to BAMUL include: The Factories
Act,1948: This act provides guidelines for the welfare of workers employed in factories,
covering aspects such as working conditions, safety, health, and hygiene.

DATA COLLECTION AND METHEDOLOGY

Direct observation:
While visit the KMF unit observe the production process, supply, how it happens, what the
types of goods produce and conduct to ask questions

Survey:
Gather a labourer’s and collect the data to impact. Any Laboure issues regarding work. It
includes production process, issues regarding labours, supply, salary wages etc.

Interaction session:
These sessions allow us to engage in discussions, ask questions, and gain deeper insights into
specific aspects of dairy farming, milk processing, quality control, marketing, or any other
relevant topics. The interaction provides a platform for knowledge exchange and
clarification of doubts.
Introduction and Orientation:
At the beginning of the visit, participants are typically provided with an introduction to
BAMUL. This may include an overview of its history, objectives, and achievements,
production process, supply process, Workers, units, what are the products produce, overall
sum of regarding BAMUL.

Facility Tour:
We are taken on a guided tour of the BAMUL facilities. This may involve visiting different
areas such as milk collection canters, milk processing units, packaging units, quality control
laboratories, and storage facilities. This provides us with a firsthand experience of BAMUL's
operations, infrastructure, and processes involved in milk procurement, processing, and
distribution.

Universal study:
The researcher focused on the labour aspects within the manufacturing process visited
During the industrial visit. It encompasses the work force employed at the factory and the
labour issues prevailing within the industry. The researcher examined various dimensions
related to labour, including working conditions, wages, job security employee benefits,
production process, and the overall well-being of the workers. The researcher primarily
concentrated the labour related aspects within the manufacturing industry, rather than the
entire milk manufacturing the industry.

Objectives of BAMUL:

Milk Procurement: BAMUL's primary objective is to procure milk from dairy farmers in its
Operational areas. It encourages farmers to adopt modern dairy farming practices and
increase Milk production. By providing a fair and reliable market for their milk, BAMUL
ensures the economic well-being of dairy farmers.
Processing and Value Addition: BAMUL focuses on efficient milk processing and value
addition to produce a diverse range of dairy products. The cooperative aims to meet the
growing demand for high-quality milk and milk products in the market. This objective
involves adopting advanced processing technologies and maintaining stringent quality
control measures

Farmer Empowerment: Empowering dairy farmers is a core objective of BAMUL. The


cooperative provides training, technical guidance, and support to farmers, helping them
improve their dairy farming practices, animal husbandry techniques, and overall
productivity. By enhancing the skills and knowledge of farmers, BAMUL contributes to
their socio- economic development.
Quality Assurance: BAMUL places significant emphasis on maintaining the highest
standards of quality and food safety. It follows rigorous quality control measures at every
stage, from milk Collection to processing and packaging. Compliance with food safety
regulations and adherence to quality standards ensure that consumers receive safe and
hygienic dairy products.

Market Expansion: BAMUL aims to expand its market presence and increase the
accessibility of its products to consumers. It focuses on effective marketing strategies, brand
building, and distribution networks to reach a wider customer base. This objective helps
BAMUL establish a strong market position and compete with other dairy players.
Achievements: Over the years, BAMUL has achieved notable milestones and contributed to
the dairy industry in its operational areas. Some of its achievements include:

Milk Procurement: BAMUL has successfully increased milk procurement from dairy
farmers, providing them with a stable and remunerative market for their produce. This has
improved the livelihoods of farmers and contributed to the growth of the dairy sector in the
region.

Product Range: BAMUL offers a diverse range of dairy products, including milk, butter,
ghee, curd, ice-cream, and various types of cheese. By catering to the preferences of
consumers, BAMUL has established a strong presence in the market.

Farmer Welfare: BAMUL's initiatives for farmer empowerment, such as training programs
and technical support, have helped farmers enhance their knowledge and skills. This has
resulted in improved productivity and increased incomes for dairy farmers associated with
BAMUL. Quality Recognition: BAMUL has received recognition and certifications for its
commitment to quality and food safety. Compliance with quality standards has earned the
trust and loyalty of consumers, strengthening the reputation of BAMUL in the market.

Milk Collection Centres: KMF establishes numerous milk collection centres throughout the
region. These centres act as the primary points of contact for the farmers to deliver their
milk. The centres are strategically located to facilitate easy access for the farmers.

Farmer Registration: Farmers who wish to sell their milk to KMF need to register.
Themselves with the federation. This registration process involves providing necessary
documentation and completing the required formalities. Once registered, farmers can supply
their milk to the collection centres.

Milk Testing: Upon arrival at the collection centres, the milk samples from each farmer are
taken and tested for various parameters. These tests include assessing the milk's fat content,
protein content, microbial load, and any potential adulteration. The purpose of these tests is
to ensure that the milk meets the required quality standards.
RESEARCH QUESTIONNAIRE

1.Is there any contractual labourers?


There are around 150 contractual labourers working the KMF Kanakapura. In this industry
40 percent of women contractual labour and 60 percent of men contractual labours are
working in the BAMUL.

2. General information on the working space and the work of production.


Totally 650 cr projects South India's biggest Milk product total labours: 450 member’s
permanent labour: 300 contract labour: 150
There is no trade union and up till now there is no such strikes happens. Working hr: 8 hrs

3.Shift: Morning, Evening and Night (BUT THERE IS NO NIGHT SHIFT FOR WOMEN
WORKERS)

4. Works in which labourers were involved when we visited.


Cleaning process of the butter: Warm water washing Refilling Dust check, packaging and
then dispatch

5.SAMPLE APPROVAL PRODUCTS: Butter, cheese milk


It will take 1 or 1 ½ hour to check because of the content of fat.

6.Is there any over duty, shifts?


No.

7.Issues regarding salary wages etc?


There are no issues regarding salary and wages as the labour codes like minimum wages act
and factories act are strictly followed. One concern is that the salary of workers from
January to June of every year is given only 70 % and remaining arrears are settled in July of
the same year.

8.ssues regarding safety and cleanliness?


In the issue of safety, it is fully covered under cctv surveillance and it is maintained highly
cleaned process. Required gadgets like the working suits, gloves etc are provided to the
labourers. Every compartment of the industry is completely isolated from dust insertion.
9. Is there any safety issues regarding women workers?
In the safety measures of women workers there is no issues regarding safety it is highly
focused regarding safety. The women and men toilets and rest rooms are cleanly maintained.
There is special space rooms for women for their personal needs. As there is direct
recruitment of police personnel in the dairy unit, there was no need of special complaint cell.

10.Is there any issues regarding machinery and equipment’s?


For the process of production highly good machinery and equipment’s maintained and in
every unit fire distinguisher is maintained for safety purpose. Most of the technical processes
of production are automated.

11.What is the insurance policy in the industry?


Employees are covered under the Employees state insurance act, 1948.

12.Was there any collective bargaining?


The labourers in KMF lack a registered trade union. So, there are very less instances of
collective bargaining except for the issue of the salary arrears to be paid to the labourers.

13.Were there any strikes or lockouts?


So far there are no lockouts or strikes in the industry.

14.How was the condition of the labourers’ working conditions during Covid times?
For the initial 15 days of 1st lockdown there was less production, so the KMF could produce
only for domestic requirements. Later every employees were made sure that they were
vaccinated and used required clothing’s to contain the spread of virus in the industry. Soon
the production came back to normal level.

Recommendation

The researcher recommends that in the area of cleaning process while production happens its
smell is bad which can affect the health of the labourers, so it should be immediately
rectified. Sociologically speaking some of the labourers expresses that they face
discrimination inside the campus of the industry, so a great awareness is needed that every
employee is equally important in the functioning of the industry.
CONCLUSION

The Karnataka Milk federation (KMF) and its associated organization, Bangalore
Milk Union Limited (BAMUL), play a significant role in the dairy industry in Bangalore,
India. KMF/BAMUL provide employment opportunities to labours who are involved in
various tasks related to milk collection, processing, quality control, packaging, and
distribution. The working conditions at BAMUL generally adhere to labour regulations and
prioritize the safety and well-being of its labour. The organization may offer employee
benefits, training programs.
