10 Alright, let’s move to reading practice now.

Please read the article on page 94 about a fashion company and answer the questions.

1. Which country are the bags from?

2. Where does the company sell the bags?
Do you have your answers? Let’s check the answers.

1. The correct answer is the Philippines. You can find the information in the 1st and 2nd lines. They
work for the company Rags2Riches in the Philippines
2. The correct answer is all over the world. You can find the information in the last sentence in the
2nd paragraph: It has five shops and an online shop which sells bags all over the world.
11 Ok, please read the text one more time and complete the sentences with these people.

With this kind of reading exercise, I recommend you should locate the people in the passage before you read.
It helps you save time and find the answers easier.

Alright, let’s have a try. Please find and underline the people in the passage. Where can you find the word
fashion designer? Yes, it’s in the 1st sentence in the last paragraph: The company works with different well-
known designers.

Where can you find the word local workers? It’s in the 1st sentence in the second paragraph: It has about
1,000 workers and it is training more.

And Resse? It’s in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th sentences in the first paragraph Reese Fernandez-Ruiz co-founded the
company in 2007 to help workers (mainly women) in the Philippines. The company gives them jobs with a
good salary.

Ok, now I think you can easily finish this exercise.

Let’s check the answers:

1. The completed sentence is Reese started Rags2Riches. You can find the information in the 1st and 2nd
line Reese Fernandez-Ruiz co-founded the company in 2007 to help workers (mainly women) in the
Philippines.

2 The completed sentence is Local women make the products. You can find the information in the
2nd and 3rd line Reese Fernandez-Ruiz co-founded the company in 2007 to help workers (mainly women) in
the Philippines

3 The completed sentence is Local women get a good salary. You can find the information in line 3
and 4 The company gives them jobs with a good salary.

4 The completed sentence is Fashion designers work with the company. You can find the information
in line 1 and 2 of the 3rd paragraph The company works with different well-known designers, for example,
Rajo Laurel.

12 Alright, let’s move to Grammar part. Today we review Present continuous

First, when do we use Present continuous?

We use the present continuous to talk about:

• an action you can see.

In the photo, Rajo Laurel is talking to a group of designers.

• an action happening now.

A: What are you doing?

B: I’m getting ready for the party.

• an action happening around the time of speaking.

Sara’s looking for a new job.

• a changing situation.
Environmentally friendly clothes are becoming more popular.

13 How about the form of the present continuous?

We form the present continuous with a form of the auxiliary verb be + the -ing form of the main verb.

Remember the spelling rules for -ing verbs.

Some verbs describe states (for example, like, love, hate, know, want) so they don’t take the _ing form.

I’m knowing a really nice café near here.

I know a really nice café near here.

With the present continuous, time expressions are often used like this week / month / year, today, at the
moment, this morning, etc.

I’m wearing my new dress today.

14 Ok, let’s practice now. Please complete these sentences with the present continuous form of the verb.

1 The correct answer is I’m shopping at the moment.

2 We aren’t working in the office today.

3 He is holding a brown rucksack.

4 The company isn’t making any money at the moment.

5 Are you buying this bag?

6 Is Tom Ford designing their clothes this year?

15 Ok, let’s apply what you’ve known about present continuous and your vocabularies about clothes to describe
what clothes

• you are wearing today.

• your partner is wearing.
• your teacher is wearing.
16 Alright, we’ve practiced present simple and the present continuous. Actually, we are often not sure about
when we use present simple and when we use the present continuous.

Let’s distinguish them. We use both the present simple and the present continuous to talk about actions and
situations in the present.

• We use the present simple to talk about facts and routines.

The company gives workers a good salary. (fact)

Luca always wears a suit to work. (routine)

• We use the present continuous to describe an action now or around the time of speaking.
Luca is wearing a blue suit today.

17 Match the questions (1–5) with the answers (a–e).

Do you have your answers? Let’s check the answers.

1 Do you normally wear a uniform? The response should be

Yes, I do, but today I’m not working, so I can wear a T-shirt and jeans

2 I’m doing my homework. Can you help me? The response should be Sorry, not now. I’m making
dinner. Maybe later.

3 Is it raining in your town today? The response should be

No, it isn’t. It’s nice and sunny.

4 Who are you working with this week? The response should be

Two people from Japan. They’re helping us with a new project.

5 Where do you come from? The response should be

That’s the end of unit 8a. Thank you and goodbye! See you in part 8b.
