1 INTRODUCTION
This document provides analysis and design foundation for 9.0m beacon tower for navigational
aids at breakwater and Coal Jetty as shown in below figure. The scope of this report is to check
the adequacy of the foundation to sustain the loads that are likely to occur during the lifetime
of the structure. Detailed structural and foundation design is presented in this report.

4 Input data
Characteristic compressive cube strength , fck = 30 Mpa
Density of concrete, ϒc = 25 kN/m3
Modulus of elasticity of concrete, Ec = 29580.40 Mpa
Yield Stress of Steel (MS) = 250 MPa
Modulus of Elasticity of Steel = 210000 MPa
5 Structural design for tower
5.1 3D modelling for beacon tower
5.2 Load Calculation
For Deck load
Load due to self-weight
Thickness of chequered plate = 6.00 mm
Load due to chequered plate = 0.472 kN/m2
Self-weight of walkway members are directly applied in STAAD.
For Live load
Live Load, considering 150kg/m2 = 1.50 kN/m2
For Wind load
The wind loads on the structure shall be considered as per IS 875 (Part 3 ) :
2015
The basic wind speed considered for structural
= 50 m/s
design
Risk coefficient, k1, (Table 1 - IS875 (Part 3 ) :2015) = 1
Terrain, Height & size factor, k2 (Table 2 - IS 875
= 1
(Part 3) : 2015)
Topography factor, k3 (Cl. 6.3.3.1, IS 875 (Part 3) :
= 1
2015)
Importance factor for cyclic condition, k4 = 1.15
Design wind speed, Vzo=Vb x k1 x k2 x k3 x k4 = 58 m/s
Design wind pressure, Pze=0.6 x(Vb)^2 = 1.98 kN/m2
Wind pressure is applied on members of walkway truss as below:
Main vertical member, ISA 90*90*8 = 0.1785 kN/m
Batten member, ISA 75*75*6 = 0.1190 kN/m
Vertical member of the ladder, ISA90*90*8 = 0.1785 kN/m
Above wind load is applied as UDL on respective members
5.3 LOAD COMBINATIONS
Load combinations considered as per Cl. 3.4.2 of IS 800:1984 are as follows:
1. Dead Load + Live Load
2. Dead Load + Live Load + Wind Load
3. Dead Load + Wind Load
5.4 DESIGN CALCULATION
4.1. Check for stress
The below figures show the elevation and bottom plan of the truss, it is found that the
utilization ratio of all the members are less than unity, hence stresses in all the members are
within permissible limits.
4.2. Check for deflection
Maximum deflection = 6.254 m
Span length = 9.000 m
Allowable Deflection (L/400) = 22.500 m
Hence OK
Deflection is within permissible limit
6 Foundation design
The following parameters are considered for foundation design,
Factor of safety against overturning 1.5
Factor of safety against sliding 1.5
Safe bearing capacity of soil, SBC at 1.0m depth 150 kN/m2
6.1 Schematic arrangement for foundation
6.2 Load Calculation
Load detail for the support location is extracted from STAAD file as shown below
Length of the foundation = 2 m
Width of the foundation = 2 m
Height of the foundation = 1 m
Weight of the foundation = 100 kN
Vertical load due to foundation, P1 = 100 kN
Vertical load due to tower, P2, considering forces acting
