AAMENA PARUK
GRADE 10
Phase 1
Scenario
B&I, the new building and interiors have a new range of doors that they are to
display at their showcase and they want simple door latches that they can showcase
and sell along with their new doors.

Design brief
I intend to design, draw, and model a simple metal door latch that is easy to use and
accommodates for a lock/can be locked.

Specifications
- The latch must be made from metal
- The latch must not exceed 14cm in length and 9cm in width
- The latch must not recede 5cm in length and 4cm in width
- The designing and making of the product must be within the client’s budget
- The latch must be easy to use
- The latch must have a lock or be able to accommodate for a lock
Constraints
- Trying to stay within the budget
- Trying to stay within the client’s criteria

1
Management plan

Designing and finalising the designs of the door latch will take a week
Manufacturing the design on a smaller scale just for the showcase will take two weeks
Manufacturing the design on a larger scale to be sold will take approximately a
month
Marketing and advertising of the product will take one to two weeks

The aim in one month will be to finalise the design and produce it on a small scale
so that it can be advertised at the showcase

Criteria Idea one Idea two Comments

1. Space taken 8/10 6/10 Idea one appears

smaller and takes up
less space on the
door, idea two is
larger than idea one
and reaches the
client’s limit. Idea two
also seems
unnecessarily long.
2. Stability 9/10 7/10 Idea two has only
for screws holding
it onto the door
whereas idea two
has six screws
holding it on the
door and is
therefore more
stable
3. Cost 8/10 7/10 Idea one appears
smaller and uses
less material to
construct it
however it uses
two more screws
than idea two. Idea
two is larger and
will require more
material to
construct, it is also
thicker.
4. Appearance 9/10 7/10 Idea one is smaller
and takes up less
space and
therefore wont be
an eyesore on the
door, it is also
better designed
and looks more
appealing, whereas
idea two is larger
and would be easy
to notice.
5. Use 8/10 8/10 Both idea one and
idea two are both
easy to use and
slide into place,
they both also
accommodate for
a lock/ can be
locked
Total 42/50 35/50

Key:
1-3: Bad
4-6: Average, with flaws
7-10: Good
Conclusion
I choose idea one as the idea that I will be making.
It takes up less space and is thinner and will therefore cost less to manufacture. It is
also more stable than idea two and will be able to be used to a longer time. It looks
better and is simple and easy to use and lock and meets the criteria of the client.
