1.2 Overview
VC211LL, in its rugged IP66 rated housing, suitable for standalone use or installation in cabinet
enclosures, has been designed to perform a complete set of natural gas measurements in
applications where performance, accuracy and ease of use are primary concerns. Standard
features enable measurement and calculation of many variables such as volume, flow rate,
density, compressibility, calorific value and generation of comprehensive real-time and historical
values.
VC211LL, with its high performance and resolution analog inputs supported with electronic
temperature compensation, requires calibration at a lot less intervals.
High performance digital inputs interface to all standard turbine meters and enables easy
connection to low frequency output meters.
Programmable pulse output provides retransmission of an accumulated value to an external
system.
Digital outputs may be utilized for local alarm or control purposes or interfaces to an external
PLC for status indication.
VC211LL has ultra low power consumption. It is powered by a primary 3.6V Li-SOCI2 battery
that lasts minimum 5 years under normal operating conditions. An optional integrated Li-Ion
charger is also provided and can be used as an alternative power supply. Li-Ion charger can
use an external certified DC power supply and Li-Ion battery to enable uninterrupted operation
of VC211LL.
An on board Lithium battery supports real time clock and non-volatile memories. Calculated and
archived data is stored in non-volatile memory and flash memory.
Front panel interface consists of a large 4x20 character LCD screen and 7 keys allowing
complete operations such as data entry, configuration and data monitoring to be easily
performed locally without the need of a computer.
The heart of VC211LL is a 32 bit, high performance RISC central processing unit. The CPU
provides ten times the performance of a conventional CPU running at the same clock speed.
This allows fast and double precision mathematical calculations.
Data reliability and integrity is maintained by keeping multiple copies of all important non-volatile
information with highly safe CRC coding.
Gas composition may be received from ConfigFlo software locally or remotely through device
configuration.
VC211LL firmware runs on a real-time multi tasking operating system. This allows continuous
parallel processing and enables real-time update of calculations on sequence of events basis.

3.3 Connecting Pressure and Temperature Sensors
Analog input subsystem incorporates two special channels for measuring pressure and
temperature. Remaining channels are for sensing standard external transmitters having voltage
or current outputs. Connections are via the J1 connector.
Temperature channel is suitable for 4-wire connection of Pt100 sensors. High resolution ADC
allows lower sensor excitation current to be used without degrading accuracy. This also
minimizes self heating errors introduced by the sensor. To further minimize temperature
measurement errors, the CPU performs high degree polynomial linearization.
The central processing unit monitors ambient temperature via an on-board temperature sensor
and applies polynomial temperature compensation to the analog measurements. Thus the unit
requires calibration at a lot less intervals.

During the battery replacement, internal Li battery cell protects accumulated
values from any loss. Therefore replacement is possible without the need for a
second primary battery. However make sure the internal Li battery is fresh before
removing the primary battery to avoid any data loss.
Accumulated data must be saved in the non-volatile memory as an additional
backup before battery replacement. VC211LL will automatically reloads the
backup data if an operational error occurs.
Failure to follow the procedures may result permanent loss of accumulated
values.
It is recommended that the battery replacement should only be carried out by an
authorized personnel.
3.6.1.1 Battery replacement procedure
1. Save the data as a protective measure.
2. Make sure the internal Li coin battery is fresh.
3. Check the type of new battery.
4. Open the battery compartment and remove the battery.
5. Mark the old battery with a permanent pen or sticker.
6. Place the new battery into battery compartment by observing polarity and close.
7. Enter the initial battery capacity regardless of existing capacity value (i.e., 13Ah for
LS33600 type).
8. Check the calculated remaining life and observe at least 60 months. Repeat the
replacement procedure otherwise.
9. End of battery replacement.
3.6.2 External DC Power Connections
VC211LL incorporates an on-board electronic Li-Ion battery charging and power management
interface, namely ECI. ECI may be used when operation via external DC power or solar panel is
required. ECI senses battery temperature via a thermistor and provides temperature
compensated charging. When external DC power is applied, ECI checks battery existence and
charges Li-Ion battery based on its capacity, charge voltage, current, and temperature.
Connections are via the J3 and J5.

ECI requires external DC power. When DC power is applied via the J3 terminals, ECI is
automatically enabled and provides controlled charging of Li-Ion battery. During charging Li-Ion
battery is disconnected from the load and is automatically connected upon a DC failure allowing
zero delay uninterrupted operation. Primary battery is automatically switched on when Li-Ion
battery is depleted. Charging resumes when DC power is restored.
WARNING EXPLOSION HAZARD! Connect only instrinsically
safe certified power supply with proper rating to J3 terminals when operation
with external DC power is required. This power supply should only be located in
non-hazardous area.

Screen rows display menu choices which consist of menus and submenus in a hierarchy. A
special right arrow sign on the first column of a row indicates that the menu item is currently
active.
Generally each screen display consists of rows. Rows either represent submenu titles or when
the lowest menu level is reached, display variables for viewing or editing.
Submenu titles are as shown in the above figure. Variable values viewed or edited are
displayed as, from left to right, variable caption, equal sign and the variable value. Variable
values can either be numerical or text. Some values are read only and some are editable.
Numeric values can be decimal or real numbers while text values are selected text of multiple
choices.
When there is no operator input for more than approximately 30 secs in battery
mode and 4 minutes in external DC power mode, VC211LL automatically
switches off the display to preserve power or changes to frequently displayed
values menu respectively. Pressing any key activates the display and takes the
user back to root menu.

SECTION 5 - STARTUP
This section describes cold and warm restart procedures.
5.1 Starting the VC211LL
VC211LL, after completion of power and field connections, can be powered up, depending on
the hardware configuration, either by applying DC power to Li-Ion charger input J3, or
connecting the primary battery to J11 terminals. Then VC211LL performs startup sequence.
During this period some important information such as model, serial number, software versions,
and site id is displayed.
VC211LL then searches a valid configuration and defaults to factory settings if not found. It then
continues to perform further startup operations based on active configuration.
VC211LL can be restarted with either cold start or warm start.
5.1.1 Cold Start
VC211L, when power is first applied, performs a cold start.
Cold start operation initializes values located in Lithium battery backup non-volatile memories.
Initial values for some parameters (accumulated values) are determined by the unit
configuration and can be zero or non-zero. Parameters which have initial values from the
configuration are set to these values and other parameters are zeroed.
Cold start can be performed locally via the front panel interface or RS232 port or remotely via
GPRS connection.
After cold start uncorrected volume (Vm), base volume (Vb), normal and
disturbed totalizers are set to their initial values. After setting initial values, the
programming protection switch is set to “ON” position and the unit is sealed. After
this point, local or remote change of totalizer values is not possible.
5.1.2 Warm Start
VC211LL can be restarted locally via the front panel interface or RS232 port locally or remotely
via GPRS connection. Warm restart is also automatically performed after a configuration
change. After warm start, parameters reside in Lithium battery backup memories keep their
previous values. No initial value assignment is performed.
VC211LL will not perform measurements for approximately 3 seconds during
restart operation. Average, min/max, or hourly values may be affected.

Some front panel operations are locked and only available after a valid user login. When login
operation is not performed and user attempts to enter a locked menu, a popup window of
“LOGIN REQUIRED” message is displayed. Similarly, when login is performed however user
does not possess sufficient rights for the requested operation; “INSUFF USER RIGHTS”
message is displayed.
When this menu title is selected a sub menu is displayed for entering user name and password.
Password characters are displayed as “*”. User name is automatically cleared and must be re-
entered when a password mismatch is detected.
CAUTION Operations performed by the active user are recorded in the
event log for later review. Therefore never share your user name and password
with others. Otherwise you would be kept responsible for the operations
performed by another person using your user name and password.
When there is no operator input for more than approximately 30 secs in battery
mode and 4 minutes in external DC power mode, the active user, if exists, is
automatically logged out. Pressing any key activates the display and takes the
user back to root menu.
Up to four users having various privileges can be defined in VC211LL configuration.
Four user types are available, namely “Reserved”, “Engineer”, “Technician” and “Guest”.
Reserved type possesses highest privileges and must be assigned to user name(s) responsible
for system installation and commissioning. Engineer type holds privileges required to perform
operations after commissioning. Technician type has functional privileges to perform frequent
operations. Finally Guest type has privileges for viewing measured and calculated values,
alarms, historical data of the VC211LL database. This type is usually assigned to a user
name(s) responsible for local reading or management.

6.1.6 <ALARMS> Menu
VC211LL features real-time verification of values generated by measurements or calculations.
Value verification are performed based on alarm limits specified in the unit configuration and/or
limits specified in the calculation standards.
VC211LL performs measurements and calculations on real-time event driven basis to achieve
high performances. Each measurement or calculation block has a certain level from raw data to
final result. Completion of a lower block generates new values and triggers all subsequent
upper level blocks ensuring fresh final results are generated based on newly available input
data. Triggering continues until the highest level block is reached and all results are generated.
At each level, all input and output values are verified and alarm flags are updated. If alarm flag
of an input value is set, then all alarm flags of values generated by upper level blocks based on
this value become also set. For example, if temperature measurement result has an alarm then
Z, dm, and all other values generated based on temperature will also have alarm. Similarly,
when a value returns to normal its alarm flag gets cleared and all subsequent level alarm flags
are updated.
Alarms are additive. This means that alarm flag of an output value is cleared only when none of
the input values are in alarm. Similarly this flag gets set when one of the input values is in
alarm.
Alarm flags have logical names. If alarm flag of a value is set than the value is called “bad” or
“good” when its flag is cleared.
VC211LL keeps all alarm flags in single register and updates this register on real-time basis.
This allows easy monitoring of current alarm status. VC211LL maintains a separate historical

alarm list called Alarm Log. The alarm log holds last 50 alarms. Set or clear of an alarm flag is
recorded to alarm log along with type, state, time and value information.
A flashing “ALRM” sign is displayed when the status column is active on the screen and at least
one alarm condition exists or previous alarm(s) not yet acknowledged.
Alarms can cause some normal totalizers to freeze and disturbed totalizers to run. Also in
average calculations, average values freeze until all related alarm conditions return to normal.
For some variables, variable contents may be replaced with last known good values or last hour
averages upon an alarm condition.

6.1.7 <CONFIGURATION> Menu
VC211LL configuration resides under this menu. VC211LL keeps multiple copies of
configuration along with CRC coding in the flash memories and the configuration is not affected
from the power losses or Lithium battery status.
The configuration can be edited, viewed or downloaded by a user holding sufficient rights, from
the front panel interface or via the ConfigFlo software running on a personal computer
connected to one of the communications ports. Similar operations can be performed remotely
by means of suitable external units connected to the communications ports (i.e., GPRS modem)
(See

COMMUNICATIONS & CONNECTIONS). Interruption or cancellation of download process
does not cause any loss or damage of the existing configuration information.
Downloading or editing a configuration locally or remotely is only possible if the programming
protection switch is set to “CLEAR” position. Upon completion of commissioning of VC211LL,
this switch is set to “PROT” position and unit is sealed. Then, after this point, it is not possible to
make changes on the metrological parameters. Having the switch in “CLEAR” position does
disable other security and protection schemes.

by the “Patm” parameter is added to the value measured from the transmitter.
3. Abs XMTR – pressure is measured from external absolute pressure transmitter
connected to the pressure channel.
4. Gauge AIN1 - pressure is measured from external gauge transmitter connected to
the AIN1 channel.
5. Abs AIN1 - pressure is measured from external absolute transmitter connected to

ELMAX When the pressure data source is “Abs XMTR” or “Gauge XMTR”, this parameter is
used when converting electrical data measured from the external transmitter to
engineering units.
The following equation is used for converting electrical signal (INDATA) from the external
transmitter to the engineering unit (P - pressure).
For “Abs XMTR”:
EUMAX – EUMIN
P = ––––––––––––––––– x INDATA + EUMIN
ELECMAX – ELECMIN
For “Gauge XMTR”:
EUMAX – EUMIN
P = ––––––––––––––––– x INDATA + EUMIN+ Patm
ELECMAX – ELECMIN
Where Patm is added to operation because Gauge XMTR does not measure
Atmospheric pressure.
For normal operation ELECMAX and ELECMIN values should not be equal.
ELMIN ELECMIN value in the above equation when the pressure data source is “Abs XMTR” or
“Gauge XMTR”.

SECTION 7 - DATABASE
Part of the VC211LL run time variables which is visible to the user consists of measurement
and calculation results, gas composition, and diagnostics information.
These data is accessible to Modbus masters connected to communications ports or to
ConfigFlo. Data access is supported locally via direct connection to RS232 port or remotely via
GPRS connection over the Internet. Modbus functions 01h, 02h, 03h, 04h, 05h, 0fh and 10h are
supported for exchanging data with VC211LL.
Data types are as follows:
int - 32 bit signed integer. Byte order is from lower to higher memory addresses, b0, b1,
b2, b3.
uint - 32 bit unsigned integer. Byte order is from lower to higher memory addresses, b0,
b1, b2, b3.
Long int - 64 bit signed integer. Byte order is from lower to higher memory addresses,
b0, b1, b2, b3, b4, b5, b6, b7.
float - 32 bit single precision real number in IEEE 754 floating point format. Byte order is
from lower to higher memory addresses, b0, b1, b2, b3.
double - 64 bit double precision real number in IEEE 754 floating point format. Byte
order is from lower to higher memory addresses, b0, b1, b2, b3, b4, b5, b6, b7.
bit - 32 bit bit field. Bit order is from lower to higher memory addresses, b0, b1, b2, b3.
To comply with the standard Modbus protocol which defines points as 16 bit registers, each 32
bit variable is interpreted as two successive points. Thus Modbus masters should query two
points to receive one complete 32 bit variable.
VC211LL incorporates user configurable Modbus addressing of its database. User can freely
set each variables Modbus address when configuring the instruments and use these addresses
during Modbus transactions. Please refer to ConfigFlo User Manual for configuring Modbus
addresses of variables.
7.1 Measurement and Calculation Data
Data group related to the measurements and calculations. Data in this group is read only,
cannot be changed. Modbus function 03h or ConfigFlo software may be used for reading.

SECTION 8 - COMMUNICATIONS & CONNECTIONS
VC211LL, as well as being a standalone gas measuring instrument, incorporates many
advanced communications features to meet the demanding operational requirements of a gas
distribution system together with ConfigFlo.
This section describes communications connections of a widely spread gas distribution network
containing many VC211LL units.
An Rflo system consists of the following components. Detailed information about the other
system components mentioned herein may be found in their respective user manuals.
VC211LL Electronic Volume Corrector – a real time, high performance and accuracy
measurement, calculation and control instrument located at the gas distribution sites. It
provides standalone, complete gas measurement and calculations, generates control,
information or alarm signals. Can be connected to local automation and SCADA
systems.
ConfigFlo Software - a software package that provides complete programming,
configuration and data monitoring functions related to the VC211LL. Can be connected
to the VC211LL locally via RS232 port or remotely via GPRS modem.
RouterFlo Software - a software package that provides multiple connections between
field VC211LL devices and remotely located ConfigFlo over Internet. Connection points
are automatically located in the network and necessary media changes are also
automatically performed. This software must run on a computer having static IP number
when connection over Internet is required.
DMASflo Software – a web based distribution management software system consisting
of various modules. Usually located at the operations center of a gas utility. Can form
large client-server architecture or can run on a single computer.
Communications between field VC211LL devices and ConfigFlo can be via the Internet or
RS232 connections. All links and media exchanges are performed by RouterFlo except the
direct connections of ConfigFlo to VC211LL.
Each VC211LL in the system possesses a unique ID number assigned when the device is
configured. Remote accesses to VC211LL devices are handled via this ID number.
More information about the communications features may be found in Configflo, DMASflo and
RouterFlo user manuals.
A block diagram of a typical distribution system containing multiple and mixed communications
connections is shown below.
