UNIVERSITY OF BUEA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY Continuous Assessment Course Title: Heat and mass transfer Course Instructor(s): Prof Toko / Mrs Ntiaya Course Code: MET308 Credit value: 4 Semester: Second Semester Acadesnic Year: 2023/2078 Time Allowed: 1h (3:00-4:00 pm) Date: May 12", 2023 Instructions: Answer all questions showing clearly all the steps PROBLEM 1 (10 marks) An uninsulated steam pipe passes through a room in which the air and walls are at 25°C. The outside diameter of pipe is 70mm, and its surface temperature and emissivity are 200°C and 0.8 respectively. If the coefficient associated with free convection heat transfer from the surface to the air is 5 W/m*.K, what is the rate of heat loss from the. surface per unit length of pipe? Take: o = 5.67 x 10-° W/m? K. PROBLEM 1 (10 marks) The composite wall of an oven consists of three materials, two of which are known thermal conductivity, K,=20W/m.K and Ke=50W/m.K, and known thickness, L4 = 0.30mand Ly = 0.15m. Theil third material, B, which is sandwiched between materials A and C, is of known thickness, Lp =0.15m, but unknown thermal conductivity Ky. Under steady-state operating conditions, measurements reveal an outer surface temperature of 75.9 = 20°C, an inner surface temperature of T= 600°C and an oven air temperature of T = 800°C. The inside convection coefficient h is known to be 25W/m?.K. Assuming, the thermal resistance of conduction to be the ratio of thickness by the thermal conductivity, and the heat flow rate for the thermal circuit equal to'the heat flux of conduction, determine the value of Ky ?
