PROBLEM 1 (10 marks)
An uninsulated steam pipe passes through a room in which the air and walls are at
25°C. The outside diameter of pipe is 70mm, and its surface temperature and
emissivity are 200°C and 0.8 respectively. If the coefficient associated with free
convection heat transfer from the surface to the air is 5 W/m*.K, what is the rate
of heat loss from the. surface per unit length of pipe? Take: o = 5.67 x 10-° W/m? K.
PROBLEM 1 (10 marks)
The composite wall of an oven consists of three materials, two of which are
known thermal conductivity, K,=20W/m.K and Ke=50W/m.K, and known
thickness, L4 = 0.30mand Ly = 0.15m. Theil third material, B, which is sandwiched
between materials A and C, is of known thickness, Lp =0.15m, but unknown
thermal conductivity Ky. Under steady-state operating conditions, measurements
reveal an outer surface temperature of 75.9 = 20°C, an inner surface temperature
of T= 600°C and an oven air temperature of T = 800°C. The inside convection
coefficient h is known to be 25W/m?.K. Assuming, the thermal resistance of
conduction to be the ratio of thickness by the thermal conductivity, and the heat
flow rate for the thermal circuit equal to'the heat flux of conduction, determine the
value of Ky ?

500°C, and the outside is maintained at 50°C. Calculate the heat lost through ‘the walls,
PROBLEM 3 (10 marks)
A steel ball [c=0.46 kI/kg°C, k = 35 W/m:°C]; 5.0 cm in diameter and initially at a uniform
temperature of 450°C is suddenly placed in a controlled environment in which the
temperature is maintained at 100°C. The convection heat-tronsfer coefficient is 10
W/m2-°C.
1- Give equations of this phenomenon (4 marks)
2- Calculate the time required for the ball to attain a temperature of 150°C. (6 marks)
